This is what modern """roguelikes""" are like to me.
They’re good, but they’re not real roguelikes, and never will be regardless of what the genre-muddlers say.

I've always hated genre purists to be honest with you. I do not care, I will simply look at a no commentary video of the gameplay, and read the most common complaints about a game to determine if I will enjoy it or not. this has never failed me. "but its not a REAL xyz" that does not matter.

Genre labels obviously don't impact the quality of a game, but they can hamper discussion or searching for games you might look when they are used too broadly. It's annoying if you want to find a new roguelike to play, but searching for roguelikes brings up tons of games that are absolutely nothing like Rogue. Or if you want to look into dungeon crawlers/blobbers, but searching for them brings up a bunch of Diablo-clones.

made up issue, when I went looking for classical 'roguelikes' I was able to find vast numbers of those games, if anything what made it more of a pain was every single game had tons of arguing back and forth "oh this isn't a roguelike THIS is a rogue like" and so on. do you consider cogmind a roguelike? what about demon. the problem with genre autism is that it gets so finely tuned that everyone has different concessions on what is or is not ok to lump in with the genre, and you miss the forest for the trees. the more important question is "will I get the satisfaction I am looking for out of this"

besides if you're lurking places other than this shithole you just hear about all the various games that come about.

There are plenty of real roguelikes, like Path of Achra. What you think you're being cute about are called roguelites, and for good reason. It's an easy distinction to get wrong but if you're going to act like your whole reason for living just went out the window because someone called a lite a like, that's a you problem.

I think it's bigger than just a semantics problem with how much it's made the genre label effectively meaningless. A "roguelike" or "roguelite" can be pretty much any game now. The only thing it tells you is that there's probably some form of randomness and an upgrade system. It's also burying the original genre. People don't know what traditional roguelikes are anymore. They were always niche, but the term was at least common enough knowledge that people were at least aware of what they were even if they never played one. Now people don't even have surface level awareness of roguelikes. They think the genre has always been Spelunky and Issac. Hell, I even saw some youtuber video essayist say the term "roguelike" was coined by Rogue Legacy.

And at that point you should ignore those creators who get it wrong on purpose or correct them. It's not Edmunds fault that Isaac got big, he didn't go out of his way to make sure that everyone called it a roguelike because Rogue existed. People called Castlevania a Metroid clone, despite coming out one month apart, now those types of platformer adventure games that make you go return to areas to further the game are called Metroidvanias. Are you going to dive into their history with an autistic hissy fit everytime someone calls Vampire Survivors or the newest fotm a roguelike? Or are you just gonna tell them that no, its a Roguelite because of the hardcore-like progressoon system? Nothing will get better if you just complain but don't try to fix it.

Define "roguelike".

That's exactly what I'm doing and you're throwing a hissy fit at me for it.

A gird-based turn-based RPG where the player and enemy turns are resolved at the same time.

that cheese is way to fucking thick. the texture is gonna be awful and flavour bland

you wanna know the secret to a good snack like this? cracker, slice of garlic sausage, a dab of franks hot sauce, then cheese and a slice of pickle (both dill and sweet work well so whichever you want)

then you can either eat it like that or ad another cracker to make it a sandwich

Enter the Gungeon would be 200% better as an actual shooter soulslike with fixed map layouts.
