Left flank collapsed. Spent a lot of actions trying to rescue and move people to the right and hold out in the corner so I wasn't doing much damage. If birthright map design/story progress is an almost flat line, rev is more of a roller coaster though with a bit more dips than highs

Among the few things people remember about lunatic rev is high quality enemies (80 HP is not an uncommon sight in late gamefor example) but it also makes many of your own units a pain to use because they start so low

It's as optional as in the other campaigns but it's dumb to skip them entirely when you have access to all of them (BR paralogues for xp if you need it for scrimblos and CQ ones for loot and fun)
Overall, I find it worthwhile to at least play it once if you like the Fates engine with all its classes and unique mechanics

Maps are amateur hour romhack tier and there was less than zero attempt at balancing the large cast.
I mean "less than" literally. Hana joins at -2 than in Birthright, in Chapter 9, where enemies have defense stats rivaling armors and wyverns in Conquest 13.

I fucking wish they went back and expand upon the mechanics, game modes, design, and theming variety established by Fates. I think IS decided that it'll be more profitable to make multi-route games with >70% of content being shared/repurposed slightly, poorly directed angles for in-engine cutscenes, and just let players have complete freedom over unit building instead of nuanced and meaningful class options. Fates was very successful commercially but had a lot of negative press in the mainstream and must have cost them a lot of money to develop compared to the low-effort slops that came after it. Even though Fates is the only game with this much activity and retention a decade after launch, IS prefers to make low-cost slops instead of strengthening their position as one of the top devs in the SRPG genre.

I guess. In Conquest they attempted to curb certain dominant strategies in the series through the enemy skills, but in the end it's not enough and it pushes you to juggernaut that much harder. I don't really mind it because that's just how Fire Emblem is in general, either a steamroll or a slog. Conquest is maybe more extreme and quirky about it, and lets you buildfag over and above the usual slog.

Mildly, sure, but Fates goes to the extreme. Awakening has way worse mal design but I ended up having far more fun with it because the actual stat/ability spread meant fights swung less dramatically, meaning my individual moves felt like they had more weight. Nowi holding a choke point is more tense than Arthur because I know Arthur is either going to brush it off or or get decimated, while Nowi living or dying is a very thin line.

Maybe on Hard mode. Awakening is a piece of shit on Lunatic where everyone feels like an awful scrimblo to use, and Hard is braindead. That encapsulates a problem with the series, in a way. Fire Emblem gameplay is t oo unless the devs consciously beat it into a specific shape. That's what I think they were attempting to do in Conquest, and what they succeeded at in many ways. You can make Arthur into a reliable tank, but it will take some effort, some planning. A big idea.
Awakening doesn't really like big ideas and planning outside of a grinding/eugenics context. Just the way its reclassing mechanics and stats are balanced tend to discourage it.

Most players tend to want more of an "experience" out of Fire Emblem and then it's one and done, but it remains one of the few games in the series I return to semi-regularly after a decade. I get what it was going for, but I think it only rewards players who are there more for the build autism than the gameplay. Awakening Hard is braindead if you make big brain long term build plans, but if you just go with the flow it hits a happy medium. I wish it was a bit less forgiving, but I prefer what it did to how Fates handles everything. Even keeping Fates' systems the same, I think just rebalancing the stats would help a lot.

So do the math, anon. That's the half the appeal of FE gameplay - the perfect information. Sir Paladinstats can take no more than 6 this turn so that is plenty for these 4 causing problems here here, that frees up Scrimblo Windtome to go over here, I put Beefarmor here to chip these 2 for Axenigger and Windtome to nab a kill next turn, Pegaslut visits that village over yonder, Green-Knight takes another two, and Red-Knight is on standby to rescue with his shit stats.
You're empowered to do things to that level of detail at a glance. People who find FE gameplay boring are not interested in that kind of optimization problem, I find.

You make a imprenetrable formation only for the entire enemy army to focus on the same character, doing chip damage, dying and freeing the space for the next guy. After 5 or 6 guys they finally kill your unit forcing you to reset.
Usually all you need to do is retreat a couple spaces back so 8 guys can't attack you in a conga line but it is retarded.

Fire Emblem AI will pretty much always pick the same target consecutively. So you have to either space out, placing only one unit in range of a preferred number of enemies, or bunch up in a way that minimizes opportunity to attack the same guy repeatedly.
Usually it's better to just space out. That's why Jagens are so amazing. They can safely take on 5+ enemies and direct the flow of the map.

I feel like the reception to Fates has gotten much warmer over time. I've even seen people come to Corrin's defense, at least claiming that Corrin isn't nearly as retarded as people claim she is and that she did the best she could with a really shitty situation (granted, the chair plan is genuinely retarded). Fates has plot issues but it's more in the contrivances that constantly push the plot rather than Corrin as a character.
I'd be inclined to agree, though the dub does hurt Corrin's character and the story in general.
Even outside of that though most people are willing to admit that Fates is one of the best FEs in regards to pure gameplay experience. I think 3H being really boring shit helped people realize that.

It's the illusion of protection provided by your "formation" that is at fault here. If your unit can take 4 hits not 5, expect death if you put them in range of 5 hits. Crits also fall under "preparing for the worst." It's as simple as doing a quick survey at the prep screen and seeing if any enemies have high crit. If people did that one thing, they'd almost enemy criticals stop from ever happening.

You can do that, but barrier is kinda rare and I'd be reluctant to waste it through spam. There are other tricks to getting her off the ground though. If you deploy her on chapter 16 with Fae and Igrene, you can get their C supports in 10 and 15 turns respectively, and they grant her an immensely helpful +10 hit. Those two supports are somewhat fast and help her out with the shitty dark tome accuracy. The manakete enemies on the map do not move and are free exp for her. After getting her some levels, you shouldn't have to worry about damage because of her MAG growth, and she actually gets really good RES for potentially soaking magic damage, but every level you're really hoping for as much SKL, SPD and luck as possible, and any boosters that can be spared are recommended.
