As someone who played HSR since beta and only quit in Amphoreus earlier this year, there were several reasons.

>Second game coming out from Hoyo after their breakout success with Genshin so people were hyped to get on the "next big thing"

There's nothing to actually /do/ with all these characters you spend money on beyond extremely repetitive and shallow combat gameplay that makes the Naruto Storm games look deep by comparison.

Beyond that, you just walk around the tiny hub town where all you can do is shop and talk to NPCs or play that shitty TV minigame that nobody liked, so much so that I hear they even removed it later on. Zenless had great character designs but it doesn't matter if there's no GAME.

I dunno what the definition of "decent" is nowadays, I did try but it is what it is. Got poverty w-engines on all of them so that's an issue. As far as gameplay goes I just dump the cat/panda ex specials when they're up and otherwise just spam attack with Yixuan and use her ex to block, then spam her ultimates and hold attack during stun, I dunno what else am I supposed to be doing. It really plays terribly, another thing is Pulchra being ranged is fucking annoying when it comes to defensive assist like I expect a block and then she comes out no fuck you I wanted a melee assist, I don't know why the devs did this but I don't think I've ever been happy to see a ranged defensive assist happen.

This is extremely subjective, but the problem I have with ZZZ when compared to Genshin or even Star Rail is that presentation of the game is incredibly frigid.
When the dialog is unvoiced, nobody has any animations aside from their usual idle, and camera does not move at all. And when character enter scene, screen just goes black and they teleport in to do their idle animation too.
Compare that to other two Hoyo games where characters will naturally walk into the scene, like in any other game.
Yes, ZZZ has really cool FMVs and the comic scenes are also great, but I think players forget that 95% of the time we are not looking at those. And most players take some kind of character expressiveness for granted, ZZZ just feels oddly cheap at points.

I just use Anby and Kot (Fox) for everything.

The worst offender in this are Genshin NPCs model, they quite literally RUIN any scene they're in because it's impossible to take them seriously after the first region. And I did enjoy bunch of ZZZ's quests when they actually put effort into them back when TV Mode actually was a thing, but these days they really do feel like minimum effort mash-throughs.
If the content is rubbish and just intended to be totally skipped, why even have it in the game? The unvoiced content in ZZZ right now is just showcasing flaws of the game... And those bits do also pop up in the main story.

No they wouldn't. Both Genshin and HSR absolutely do this same shit in parts of their main story.

ZZZ is very obviously winning but it's hard to track since it's way less phone friendly than HSR and even Genshin. But it's gotten pushed on consoles and PCs hard.
I can't go anywhere without seeing ZZZ at this point. The memes are ubiquitous, the characters are everywhere, it's clear the games reach is ridiculous. But it caters to a more core gamer audience with its arena format so of course its phone numbers are down. Eitherway it's easily pulling in enough money to justify continued development
