Shattered Memories = Origins > Downpour > Homecoming

Shattered Memories is a cool idea with some interesting mechanics in how it reads what the player does, but ultimately isn't that much fun to play. Still, it's not outright broken or frustrating. Similarly, Origins actually has some decent puzzles and environmental design, but the story is pointless and the item durability mechanics are tedious. Decent game, but pretty flawed at times.

Downpour is buggy, looks really ugly, feels awful to play, and the story is aggressively mediocre. I did like some aspects of exploring the world as well as some of the themes they tried, but it falls flat on its face super quickly.

Homecoming is just bad. The only positives I can come up include the music (which is just alright compared to other games) and the boss design. Otherwise, the combat is exhausting with how strict it is as well as the constant enemy arenas, the story actually shits itself and trips over its own desperate attempt for a twist (multiple endings make little to no sense and feel like they just wanted to get fans to point at the cool thing they recognize). The puzzles were generally ass, and even had a few that could outright softlock you. And overall it just felt like the devs didn't know what they wanted to do. Cult horror? Psychological twists? Pyramid Head? Just throw it in, fans of Silent Hill liked that stuff, right?

If I had to replay one, I'd go for Shattered Memories. At least it was interesting in what it did and it's short enough that it doesn't grate on my nerves.

Homecoming is shit. No redeeming qualities other than smooth gameplay. No issues there at least.

Fuck shattered memories, running away from ONE enemy type the entire game and it's not even scary at ALL. disgusting.
At least Homecoming had scares and cool monsters and decent locations and graphics for its time. The only think that sucked was the story.
Origins was "okay" but just copying shit from SH1 and 2 and nothing original.

I just started playing 3 after playing 1 and 2 for the last 2 Octobers. So far this has been very interesting. Throws you right into the monsters compared to 2 and there are much more, crazier designs.
As well, the game is fucking insane so far with how it's just throwing me from place to place. I'm currently in the building connected to the construction site and have only been playing for a total of 2 hours I think.

Shattered Memories because it has Major Kusanagi singing the image songs.

It also innovates rather than iterates on Team Silent games which is a plus. If it was just a bog standard remake it would just be the "soullless Wii remake" of the PSX original.

Yeah SH3 is actually one of the best SH games, MUCH scarier than SH2 and even scarier than SH1. Sure the story is nothing amazing but good enough.
It's still a great horror game, while SH2 is mega overrated. And SH1 is too clunky gameplay wise and has dated graphics, maybe the remake will finally fix those 2 major issues. Enjoy 3 anon

Does a horror game necessarily need combat? What about combat makes it unique to Silent Hill? With the chase sequences, there is at least some level of tension that is inescapable. Do you really need to hit enemies with a rusty pipe *that* badly?

The game's psychoanalytic gimmick works fairly accurately, and psychological horror is usually a facet of Silent Hill to some degree, whether its experienced by the player or NPCs for story related reasons.

Much like SH2, it uses complex grief but in an entirely different direction. Both use unreliable narrators and their resolution ends in confrontation, but framed entirely in different ways. Rather than using the town to have James confront his issues, the entire game of SH is the counseling session itself, creating a consistent ludo narrative harmony.

No, but prior SH games have alwyas made it a point to have it and even then SM isn't the first game to do this. Clock Tower predates SH and has no true combat system for example.
>The game's psychoanalytic gimmick works fairly accurately, and psychological horror is usually a facet of Silent Hill to some degree, whether its experienced by the player or NPCs for story related reasons.
Have to disagree, I find the system too limited to really feel meaningful. You have three really shitty routes and one perfect route, feels especially egregious considering how easy triggers for the shitty routes are. Shattered Memories is probably my favorite of the western Silent Hill because it feels it had proper development time unlike the rest of the developed western Silent Hill games. Also the original ideas for Origins, Homecoming and Downpour were wack.
>Origins was originally to be a dark comedy like the scrubs and would play RE4 clone
>Homecoming was meant to be the first game of a trilogy being Silent Hill: Avengers edition and Laura was planned to be the shitty love interest until they discarded that
>Downpour had Murphy as Patrick Bateman type character

Good luck, I really love 4. Dont listen to fags who complain about it recycling areas or going downhill or whatever. The game has a very very solid momentum.

Just remember that you ARE Henry and YOU are responsible for everything that happens to the supporting characters you encounter. I had this attitude when I played and it made the game very very exciting to me the whole way through. I think it's the best "action horror" game of all time (vs games like RE4, RE5, Dead Space etc)

I agree to the second point. I never really thought SH needed combat, since the main draws to me were the exploration, story, and puzzle elements (and that is usually what is discussed in retrospective discussions). So, for me, combat just felt like they were aping Resident Evil for the sake of players used to having that feature in horror games. It's present across the series, yeah, but it always felt extraneous to me.

Some of the psychological measures were superficial, but it worked in my case because I got the drunk dad ending and IRL my dad was a drunk, so I was impressed. The fact that it was because I did find myself looking at beer bottles and the whisky bottle was disappointing to learn, yeah. If they had more time to create a sophisticated system, there would probably be less of a disconnect or rejection by the player.

But they WORKED AROUND LIMITATIONS especially when they were limited to locked down platforms like the PS1.

You fuckjng idiot. If you are team silent circa 1997-1999 and you're making SH1, do you just design all of the art and assets as you saw them in your mind's first draft? Hoping "oh one day I hope there will be some magical way for PS1 games to be upscaled to ultra high 4k res and see our TRUE vision"? Or do you WORK AROUND THE LIMITATIONS AND ADJUST THE AESTHETIC, ART, ASSETS TO SUIT THE HARDWARE YOU ARE **LOCKED** DOWN ON??? THEY HAD NO OTHER OPTION!

You dumb motherfucker. If there was ANY game that you should be playing at original res and with CRT filter on its silent hill 1. Fuck it play RE123 however you want but SH1 had genius art and tech people behind it who THOUGHT HARD ABOUT THIS STUFF.

The pitch black darkness replaced by a neutral grey tone, the gritty shaky texture of the chain fencing replaced by smeary pngs, the blurry dreamlike human silhouette of Harry - who moves like a real person but whose exact features you can't make out - replaced by a comical Minecraft model and cutscenes where you can obviously tell the characters aren't even moving their lips when they speak.

This shit is UNACCEPTABLE and you DIDN'T REALLY PLAY SH1 UNLESS IT WAS AT THE ORIGINAL SETTINGS. Running this game at higher than native res, without dithering, without some kind of scanlines ABSOLUTELY BUTCHERS the intended presentation. All of them have pros & cons.
Origins while having a shit story more or less has classic survival horror gameplay that's hard to come by so if you liked the previous games I'd recommend playing it even if it's not for the story.
Shattered Memories is a walking sim it's hard to compare it to anything in the series.
Downpour has the most potential combining mechanics from all three outsourced games but completely failing because of budget imo and bizzare choices. I like that they got rid of Yamaoka yeah I know blashphamous but the outsource devs shouldn't even bother copying the og games and make something of their own which they tried here with a lot fault and still looking at the older sh gams.
Homecoming has an interesting hook with a rival cult but it all falls apart when they expand. the game' way too linear as well. the twist worked on me because it was my first sh game.

Origins is the weakest of the bunch but it was a PSP game so whatever.
Homecoming was never properly finished but I liked what I played, the schizo ending is one of the best in the series.
Shattered Memories is kino
Downpour has some good moments, I liked exploring the town.

SH1 plays better than 3

When you guys replay the games what difficulty is it on?

1 on hard
2+3 on normal because strafing from corner to corner taking hunting rifle potshots at bosses for literally 15 minutes straight on hard mode is genuinely poor design

Among these four?
Zero and Homecoming easily, both are great horror games with their flaws (breakable weapons in 0 and janky combat in Homecoming).
Downpour was okay, pretty fun for a single playthrough.
The abominationt that is SM should be erased from existence.

>decent puzzles
I am still laffin
The shrink gimmick gets old pretty fast (oooh, look, mosters have booba now!)
You never feel threatened in normal world, since the game establishes its rules in a very clear way early on - you know that mosters appear only in nightmare sequences and daytime sections become shitty walking sim.
Nightmare sequences are glorified subway surfers, taking away any chance at being spooked solely by atmosphere and fear of uknown and soon the only emotion you feel is sheer fucking frustration because you got memed into playing this trash.

That explains a lot.

Shattered Memories (wii edition) was comfy, want to replay it on dolphin someday soon. A much better walkingsim than it was a horror game, really nice atmosphere, art direction, music and story/setting.

On my playthrough, Kaufmann deduced that I was a virgin loser for even coming to therapy in the first place he was totally right

Shattered Memories elevates SH1 and 3 for me because it shows how behaviorally & psychologically damaging growing up without a loving parent can be for a child. Cheryl's story feels uncomfortably realistic. I felt so bad for her. And although Harry doesn't make it out of SH3 alive he at least got to raise his daughter Heather through her formative teenage years so that she can walk away at the end of SH3 a confident young woman.
