I don’t self insert so I can go either way, depends really on the game and what I’m doing. In dark souls I make my fighters Male and mages Female.

I'll play a female character if she's the only option, i.e shit like Tomb Raider, but in my 30 years of gaming I've never been presented with a character creator and decided to play as a woman. HOWEVER: I do prefer 2D hentai games with female protagonists, especially if they get raped a lot. Make of that what you will.
