Bethesda was just lucky that they were the only western 3rd party developer popular before the invention of smart phones. Normies would read what nerds of the previous era would say about the company. I also blame shit like the todd howard memes. /v/ completely fucked up by memeing bethesda into a position of being some huge insanely talented company. But looking at their games they have never made a competent game. Skyrim came out at the beginning of the smart phone era. I knew gaming died when I saw a post of two hot white girls in dovakin helmets playing skyrim naked. That was when gaming died.

>Windhelm
Depressing, some cool buildings and areas, but it's all hidden under a coat of grey-brown bleakness. Lost its arena, too, and some underground shit
>Markarth
Supposed to be a unique 2nd era Nord cliffside city, with a College of the Voice and shit, changed to le Dwemer ruin forsworn shithole
>Riften
Again, small and too few colors, overall okish concept. Ratway is cool. The canals idea should be developed further for some of that Morrowind feel
>Winterhold
I guess it was cut out of the game to make 11.11.11. Bullshit. Should have had a DLC where you rebuild it with magic, tying the mysteries of its magical founding with its magical Collapse, with a little bit of Psijic time stuff
>The rest
Not even worth mentioning.
Very disappointing. Only Morrowind did its province justice, even moreso by leaving the mainland part of it up to the imagination. Same should have been done to Cyrodiil and Skyrim.

No, it's not an issue for me, i'm just saying that when posters say "modded skyrim looks worse than vanilla" they usually provide screenshots like >>723542507 (OP) where there seems to be a mindset of more mods = prettier. For example, they add a bunch of trees in whiterun where there clearly shouldn't be any trees.
If a modded game follows the vanilla art directions more closely it usually turns out better.

I honestly don't mind that being simplified. Less than 1% of people notice stuff like that. Compare it to Call of Pripyat where they had a-life instead of radiant AI (same thing) but you could join in on someone going to hunt artifacts as a means of fast travel. Yeah, that's true but when it does happen it makes the world feel much more alive. I like the idea of NPCs having friends, travelling to other cities, eating dinner, having a hobby or visiting chapels and inns. I feel like there were a lot of quests in Oblivion (Especially in the DB questline) where the npcs had schedules which you had to account for to plan when to strike, whereas in Skyrim that isn't really the case for a lot of NPCs.

The Morrowind-Skyrim period worked well for Bethesda because they were really one of the few companies making open world games at the time. And unlike other open-worlds, you could interact, talk to anybody, go anywhere, and carry out another life. /v/ likes to forget that at one time Bethesda's games were unique, and they didn't have to be graphically or mechanically the best in the market. The scope of their games gave off the illusion that the trade off in downgrades in other areas allowed freedom to do more. They predated the advent of open-world Ubi-slop by a hair.

CS is a sunk cost fallacy. So much work has been put into it that people want it to be the enb killer, but in reality it's about on par with your average low-tier ENB, if not maybe even a little bit worse.

The smart way to do this would been to have had another outer part of whiterun with loads of houses but opening the city gate just jumps you past it to the normal part of Whiterun. Kinda like the Caesar's legion camp in NV where you can see all the tents and encampments but can't actually get to those areas. guys, no one is saying we need real sized, real scale cities in fantasy fiction games.
What we're saying is you need to actually immerse the player and make them feel as if they're in a place that could be real. It doesn't mean we need 1000 buildings that are all enterable and explorable, it means we need more than just a dozen houses, even if some of them are just there for visuals and immersion. Not every single area needs to be enterable or explorable, but I should be at least able to make it feel like I'm part of a real world.

People who don't understand why this was good design decision are genuine retards. The granularity of Skyrim is its whole appeal.
It's literally what made it (and Elder Scrolls in general) so massively popular. Being able to go into every single house and pick a fork off the table is the whole magic of these games. The corollary to that is that everything has to be more limited in scope. Had they gone large but generic, we wouldn't still be talking about this game 15 years after it's release like we're doing right now.

Publishers and shareholders want to see more things on screen at once like a moooovie, they don't care if each NPC has a schedule, name, story and inventory. Notice how Starfield started moving away from this formula and look how that turned out. In those games it really one or two towns or cities like Skyrim has like a dozen with 4 of them being sizeable. Not everyone is Rockstar who have and are willing to sink a billion dollars into their game.

That's like saying any middle city in the US is the heart of Americas economy. Unless bullet trains or airplane can carry as much as container ships that will never be the case.

Skyrim economic heart is solitude.

You dont need to do that. Once again, oblivion had larger towns and so did morrowind.

You dont need AI, just a competent team. Modders can do it for free and thats usually a solo guy.

Enderal did it, skyblivion is doing it, and so is the skywind team.

I thought dragonsreach was the traditional capital of Skyrim, after Windhelm and before Solitude. Solitude, Riften, and Windhelm seem way more economically productive. Even Markarth and Dawnstar seem to be pumping out silver and iron. I guess Whiterun has a significant amount of agriculture and their little meadery too, but I don't see it as particularly prosperous relative to the rest of the holds aside from Winterhold and Morthal obviously.

There is a handful of buildings outside of Whiterun already but nobody really cares about them because they are mostly farmsteads. I think just closing it up a little bit, maybe adding a barracks outside of dragonsreach, vigilant's temple, a few other random productive buildings, and like some more homes. But overall the scale is fine in my opinion and people already bitch about loading screens in Bethesda games.

hit up Halted Stream Camp nearby, grab the transmutation tome and learn it, transmute all the iron from that mine into gold then make jewelry until you hit 30 smithing to learn dwarven smithing and melt all the scrap in the reach for easy smithmaxxing.
or just skip straight to Markarth and empty out Kolskeggr and Cidhna mines to make jewelry to 30 smithing that way

Based and truthpilled. I'm playing BG3 for the first time right now and while I've been having a lot of fun, Act 3 is showing how annoying this is. Tons of NPCs and buildings are basically irrelevant. NPCs in particular are annoying because there are like a gorillion named NPCs wandering around the city that can be interacted with. 99% of them are just fluff that don't even have any dialog options, but some of them just so happen to have sidequests and shit, so you're incentivized to talk to everyone, on the small chance they might be tied to content.

This is another reason why dense (and by dense, I mean if an enterable building / npc exists, there's a meaningful reason they exist) hubs are superior to open world RPGs. Outside of a couple games, give me KOTOR/Deus Ex over Skyrim anyday.
