That's quite the assumption.
If anything the long history and tradition of fables contradict this, since fables very explicitly relied on using character traits to make characters more or less relatable to serve various purposes.
Leaning into preconceived stereotypes or subverting them for desired effects, while presenting stories and roles that would be relatable to people.

People relate more to the suggestion of a face or trait, than they do to an actual fully realized human.
They anthropomorphize things that aren't human by seeking out traits that appear human, so more of the interpretation comes from their perspective and biases, which inherently can make the character more relatable, because the audience has done most of the work to do so.

That's every healthy animal which is able to bond and connect better with creatures that look like themselves, including humans. Even dogs have a pair of eyes, a mouth, two ears, fur, facial expressions and live in groups as we do, so its easier for us to connect with them than lets say a snake. Imagine you are the guy that likes and connects with birds, snakes, insects, and lizards, animals that look nothing like your species, your genes would've died out a long time ago for obvious reasons.
