I'm the first guy and that post was completely sincere. I'm a huge fan of classic Resident Evil which are much more gameplay focused so Silent Hill 2 seems like a shitty walking sim with braindead gameplay in comparison. It's too easy on medium, it's still too easy on hard but now enemies take so long to kill that it starts to look like a slapstick bit and that scripted part where Pyramid head chases you is broken. At some point I realised I kind of hated playing it and that I was only playing just to get to the next cutscene and then I figured I might as well watch a fucking cutscene compilation instead

To add to that, enemies are no threat, you easily walk past them when dodging zombies in RE at least takes some skill and timing. There's barely even a reason to use a gun most of the time because its super easy to just whack everything to death. There's just not really a strategy or anything going on in the game, aside from the puzzles which aren't good enough to redeem the rest of the gameplay. If you can tell me how the gameplay is good then go ahead.

The remake shits on the direction, models and lightning of the original and it stretches it out to the point it feels tedious, the original is an 8 hour or so game while the remake is almost twice as long with the exact same content. The remake is a good game but it simply pales in comparison to the original experience. Music, atmosphere, pacing, cinematography, all of it is obviously superior in the original.

But the remake DOES have some merit. First of all, I think the new Maria was hot as hell. Nice cleavage and body, I like her freckle face and big nose. She looks real. Same with James, the actor for James is fantastic. The details of the world, the puzzles, everything worth looking at are all unbelievable quality. They really captured the vibe, the distortion, grime and decay that Silent Hill is known for in a big way. It's the most beautiful and disgusting looking horror game I've ever seen. The gameplay loop is good, genuinely better than the original. Sweeping floors, checking doors and stomping mannequins is far more "fun" to actually do than it was in the original.

But that's where the problems begin. Game is padded to hell and back, there are dozens of examples of AAA/Sony/Last of Us fake cinematic BS everywhere, like "drag the dumpster over to the window" and "crawl through the gap in the floor" over and over again. In the original game you only stick your hand in a random hole in the wall once, stick your hand in a toilet once. In the remake they use those moments 2-3 times each which completely destroys the unique fear factor those moments used to have. The original only has one false wall that you bust down, near the end in the labyrinth. In the remake, you bust down at least 9-10 false walls. It's all bullshit level design that doesn't honor the flow of the original.

If the game had managed to keep the original level design and sound intact while just updating the graphics and gameplay (like MGS Delta) I think the game could have been significantly better in the eyes of the fans.

I never said combat or action would be the only way you could possibly spice up the boring parts of the game. I compared it to RE which is the most similar thing to Silent Hill, and which works better as a game because it is more combat focussed but of course that is not the only way you could design a good game. I mean Disco Elysium is a great game that is engaging at all times and it has no combat. The problem with SH2 is that it has nothing else in place where RE has combat or strategic inventory management and ammo preservation. i'd also recommend emulating the PS2 versions of the other games. it's tempting to go for the shiny PC versions with higher resolutions and crisper textures but i think the games look better and are scarier the more noise and grit you have. SH1 in particular exemplifies this quality when you play it with a CRT filter and have the darkness at appropriate levels - when people pump up the resolution and disable the wobbling textures etc they're really robbing themselves of half the experience.

Dude play the original. Nothing against the remake, it's very fun and well put together but redditors overrate that shit so hard. The biggest problem with the remake is that it feels like a hollywood movie rather than a dream-like state like the original, the second biggest problem is the massive freaking insistence on fanservice like with the loop theory that make no sense and was just inserted there by Bloober to hint at the remake being a sequel rather than a real remake.
The original had shitty voice acting, shitty difficulty, shitty combat, but the level design and story is actually stellar. Think of it as more than the sum of its parts.
Play the remake after. It's still worth playing, but SH2 pure on PS2 *is* Silent Hill 2, and nothing will come close to that.

I think Eddie looks grotesque and off putting as a disgusting fatso, and that's the point. The original he's very normal outside the one CGI close up of his face. In the Remake, he's a fucking creepy ass psychopathic killer. The nasty fat neck works really well. Laura is slightly off putting with her bug eyes. Angela is also off putting being so frumpy and nervous looking compared to the original, especially the CGI model that looks like Sandra Bullock. And once again it seems that's the point. Each of the characters uncanny nature has been heightened.

I liked it. Characters were a major highlight for me. I can't possibly imagine the characters looking the way they used to look anymore whenever I picture them in my head. Especially Laura
