There's more "speculation" than anything actually happening and now that even Nintendo is doing the "let's just do what we did last time but better graphics" route like PlayStation and Xbox do, we're guaranteed at least 7-10 years of nothing really interesting or unique happening. Nobody really talks about games here that aren't made within the current and last generation of games either, so if you're into anything older than last gen, you're done. The older it is, the less engagement generally.

It has very little to do with how niche the thing is. Some of the best threads on old /v/ where about big Nintendo series like Zelda, and other popular series like Devil May Cry, MGS, Fallout etc. My personal fondest memory of /v/ was around the time Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver released, which are hardly obscure games yet produced very comfy threads. /tv/ used to have great live threads for relatively big shows like Breaking Bad, Twin Peaks etc. /sp/ used to be at it's most fun during stuff like the olympics and world cup. People who blame it on the state of the industry mystify me. Yes, AAA sucks ass, but there's still a ton of good AA and Indie games out there. I've beat five in the past two months, and there are a few others on my list I look forward to getting once another sale hits. It's been a great few year for smaller developers.

You're acting on the assumption that you will never be able to have any kind of thread because you have a flag. That's not the case. You can go to /sp/ and nobody is going start hounding on you just because they see your flag. If anything, flags will just make it so everyone who is in the thread that does want to talk can all disregard the little side squabble going on with the few people who are trying to detail. If this is what we're worried most about, IDs won't help either since, as soon as someone sees you have more than 2 replies, you could be disregarded as a samefag.
