Gemedev
Devvy on the 'log
Today I thought up an easily codable and set-uppable method of heavily incentivizing my players with engaging with a certain system without failing to do so resulting in a game over, by making the consequences of having not engaged with it a chore to deal with.
Incentive to even do any of that at all will be gameplay that requires and rewards genuine intelligence and attention and a very rewarding gameplay curve the further they go with a VERY rich narrative that hooks you.

I finally finished rigging (I think)
now
uhh
animating I guess.
Is the standard approach for animating with props and extra items to "store" them shrunk down inside the characters model until they're needed in the animation?
Or is there some way to properly sync location information and animations between separate characters to then be used at run time in engine for placing and playing back animations across multiple characters?
Anonymous No.723559331
>>723559031
I mean, that's one way to do it. I just make them invisible until needed via code. There is no "right" way to do it.

when introducing a new mechanic you want to ask yourself if this is adding or detracting from the experience you want to make.
and then actually test it. is it fun? what can you do to make it fun? is the game more fun with or without it?
there is no answer now because you have to do work to find out.

yeah these are my sprites. Ghost babel sprite is around 24 px. I started off doing 24 px as well for good measure but it looked really bad so now I am making it 32 px.

>>723560346
I know. The point was to add some platforming sections and adding some kind of melee weapon gameplay like Grey Fox in MGS1 integral version.
I still don't know if im doing full stealth, or a shooter, or both giving the player a choice how to play.

Found out how to improve my state machines that made my code a lot more efficient by using functions as states. Made my code for certain stuff go from unreadable to like, 1 or 2 lines.
Randomly checking up videos by some pakistani programmers really helps sometimes.
Pretty much the only thing that worries me now is just animations and music, since my game is 2D and not pixel art I'll probably just have to be smart about what I can do animation wise. Music I have no idea though.
Might just contact a guy on youtube who's music I like. Small channel but really like his musical vibe. But not until I'm further in.

Anonymous No.723562812 >>723566768
>>723562238
It's always good to give people options. If your party size is 4, shoot for at least 6 options yeah. Especially in RPGs, there's times where people don't like to play certain characters or classes and wish they could replace them.
If there's specific roles like the other anon said, I'd say it should always be +1 to what the party needs.
If an intended party has 1 tank, make 2 tanks. If an intended party has 1 healers, make 2 healers. If an intended party has 2 DPS, make at least 3 DPS. That choice goes a long way.

Last time I was working in staff position, i learned that one minute of good quality will cost at least 150 bucks in production. Kinda pricey, if one has to post at least once a week (Fridays?). I think a game feeling like a game is a pitfall. If you make a shooter and the players thoughts and feeling during the shooting sections are "I'm clicking on checkboxes to complete a list in order to progress" rather than "I'm fucking annihiliating some fucking demons" then you've failed as a game dev.

the entire AAA industry is working as hard as they can to put this thought into players' heads constantly, with a literal checklist on screen, numbers popping out of the enemies etc. and yet even they haven't succeeded. players still think of what they're doing as
>I'm fucking annihiliating some fucking demons

you've made up a fake problem that actual gamers (non-developers) don't encounter.

Making reusable and base components and understanding how you want to set up your focus system will help a ton. Consider the following sentences:

This book has good bookread.

This record has good recordlisten.

This movie has good moviewatch.

So yeah, I've just made up three new words: bookread, recordlisten and moviewatch. Now these words may sound stupid to you, but that's not all there is to it. These words are also useless. To demonstrate this I'll rewrite the above sentences without using them:

This is a good book.

This is a good record.

This is a good movie.

See where I am going with this? Just keep in mind that people have been discussing books, records and movies in the English language for a long time, without ever feeling the need to invent ghastly word-constructs like "bookread", etc.

Unironically using AI as a pair programmer is the best way to achieve maximum productivity, so long as you can bugfix the sometimes erroneous code. AI stomps 90% of programmers when it comes to code quality so there’s zero reason not to use it unless you’re developing brand new tech, and even then it can be used to help develop the architecture of the program

I'd say it's way too early for you to worry about that. Start by making the rest of the game, and have an AI that just does random actions for now. Once you have a functional base you can make it smarter.
One way you could make it is by using machine learning. Essentially, you make the AI play against itself over and over, being given rewards for making moves that result in something good or vice versa. If the TCG you've designed is logical the AI will get good at it.

I know that feeling. I've stopped asking for ideas because it's pointless.

My current plan is to copy something but give it a cool artstyle. There are some genres out there that are fun but despite the shocking amount they all have the same boring style (with maybe 1-2 outliers a decade ago). So a stylish makeover can really set you apart. Kinda like how Persona5 was just a generic jrpg but people praised the style. If you aren't an artist this advice won't help much though.

Yeah, pretty much. In order to not get a cease and desist from Devolver, I settled for more of a high contrast style inspired by 50’s noir movies, with the palette mainly focused on red-white and black colours. Was going to be a mod at first, like what Brutal Doom was to Doom, but figured I might as well get paid for it. I had the story in mind, the game’s runtime is two hours long, but with seperate storylines that majorly differ depending on the player’s choice to kill an enemy outside of the prologue. Totalling about four hours if you wanted to play through the two storylines.

Has any research been done statistically as to what the most purchased price point is on Steam? It seems like the data is available to figure that out and it'd probably help for pricing small indie games successfully.

AI code either works or it doesn't work, that's not as bad imo. If you have AI write your inventory and it works, no one is going to care. If you write your own inventory but make the UI ugly, people care.
It's easier to get objective results with code. It's shit and a waste of time but it's at least better than the inverse.

>>723632476
There's a few addons people have made to change the theme. Can't remember one off the top of my head but some guy on YouTube has a video setting the UI similar to Unreal with an addon that makes the file browser dock collapse.
Biggest thing I hate about Godot is their testing game window UI. It use to just render the game, it was simple, worked and wasn't ugly. Now you have a bunch of Godot UI, the scaling is weird and it just feels bloated.

They're graphics cards, it's a matter of hardware not software. The only difference you'll see in gaming is performance.

Nvidia has better hardware for raytracing, encoding graphics good for recording the screen and by extension good for video streaming and they have DLSS on some games. They also have CUDA which literally no one in gaming uses because it's too much effort for a single platform specific performance boost.

AMD is just raw hardware. Their cards are cheaper for the same performance and have way more VRAM than Nvidia. The only thing you really lack in gaming is the raytracing performance, it's not impossible it's just not Nvidia.

If you're literally just playing video games, don't care about livestreaming, raytracing or using your computer for AI, rendering multi million particles representing a galaxy going into a black hole, some other science application, just purely gaming, AMD is technically better for your money. Though with everyone using UE5 you'd probably wish you had DLSS.

Because the hardware supports different APIs. The 2 most common ones are OpenGL and Vulkan, there's no graphical difference between the hardware because that would be partial support for the API and not full.
If I tell the GPU to render a red triangle spinning clockwise, if it spins counter clockwise then the support for the API I'm using isn't full support.

Which means, there's no difference because when you tell it to do a certain thing, it produces the same output. Even if internally it does different things to get there.

It's a custom built AMD chip that is both a CPU and a GPU. Their screen out the box is also 720p which is easier to render than 1080p, it takes less everything to render at lower resolutions. The screen size being small makes the 720p screen tolerable.

There was once a time when games needed to be tailored to different brands of graphics card. Maybe brand X could support sharper textures but couldn't handle the fancy shadow techniques that worked on brand Y. As a result there could be major differences between an Nvidia card, an ATI, a Voodoo, or whatever else.

There was another time, more recently, when graphics card manufacturers would convince/bribe game studios to add effects that either only worked on their cards or would perform much better on their cards than the competition. Think Nvidia PhysX or AMD TressFX.

For the most part, thankfully, this is a thing of the past. If you have three graphics cards from different companies, with similar release dates and price points, and play the same game with the same graphics settings then you shouldn't see any visual difference between the cards.

In terms of performance, you might still find that certain effects are fast on one card but too slow on the others. There's also the matter of different AI upscaling options (DLSS, FSR, XESS).

The depth of field doesn't make any practical sense. It's focusing on where you are, not where you're going. A player would normally be looking into the distance, but it's blurry and out of focus here.

When you start thinking about it gamedev is insanity. You spend anywhere from months to years making something in hopes that people will like it but there's never any guarantee for it. Years of your work might become worthless the moment you release.

it's a pointless limitation that makes your models look worse than they have to

don't be afraid to add polygons when they benefit the model

will anyone care? not really but you will. whenever you're making models you wont stick to your limits because you already broke them, youll create a game that isnt coherent.
your art direction is bred out of the limits youre giving yourself, once you scrap the art direction you scrap the consistency.

>Years of your work might become worthless the moment you release.
no, it never has to be like that. you make a playable prototype and get people to play it within MONTHS (full time). people end up in the situation you describe because they either
- commit to a project with zero playtesting feedback or
- can only put in like an hour a day in which case shit takes forever, true, but you also can't call that "years of work", now can you?

You can always reuse the code, systems and tools from the previous game, so it's not wasted effort even if it flops.

eh, depends on what you want to do. Aesprite is good enough but I do other art stuff in photoshop too and their cloud storage is pretty decent. I was planning to get off it once this project is finished but I have too much stuff tied in atm.
