It was very interesting but not particularly good, after a short intro that makes it seem like it's going to be a music themed action game it does a hard turn into an action-RTS hybrid that doesn't control very well. Driving around doing sidequests with the car and listening to the radio is fun enough to justify what it probably costs these days though.

The boomers destroyed real estate, Tim Schafer included. People are being displaced. Tim Schafer isn't helping.

>theres no demand, nobody wants the game, pull the plug
imagine if tim schafer wasnt a piece of shit
Watch the Psychonauts 2 documentary and youll understand everything.
Schafer is still a hilarious genius but hes pretty much hands ofd outside of writing. Studio got overrun wirh liberal whiners and fags and he cant say no to any of them.
They had a lead who designed Bioshock 2 as the Psych 2 lead but ran him off because he was using logic about scheduling and design to get the game shipped on time. Then the people who whined about him quit anyway, the game was super late, and they finished and had some quality purely because they ended up doing the things he said to do in the first place.
They need to stick to Schafer written point and clicks and he needs to take the reigns but he doesnt want to or is too old now. Brutal Legend, Psyxhonauts 2, Broken Age, and just about every game since DoubleFine became a company has been a letdown.
He peaked at LucasArts
>>723561248
just general stories they told about the development of grim fandango (at the time the most expensive video game ever)
i can't remember the specifics but tim would lie to producers about stuff like how far along they were into development of certain areas because he didn't wanna cut anything despite missing all deadlines and being way over budget, and when they found out it was usually too late, something like that

I watched it at 2x speed out od curiosity of game development. Its the most inaide look at game development youll ever see but still very lacking in showing the game dev and decision making stuff. Personal stories, drama, stressing finances, the buyout, covid, their game jam, etc take up way too much of it.
I would say its far too long to be worth it. Someone should edit down the interesting bira, it could probably fit into 2-5 hours.

I watched all of it over a month or two for similar reasons of wanting to see an more indepth look at Game dev. It's pretty good on the design front the whole time you see every level in the game throughout the stages of dev. Doc is light on the writing process for obvious reasons of it being a one man job and art is just kinda brainstormed then approved or "doesn't fit" Tims vision. The music and programing are mentioned and shown as much as a red headed stepchild.
There is also a heavy underlying theme about how almost everyone working at the studio has to commute to work and even some staff members outright leave or become remote due to SF cost of living crisis. Tim largely seems uncaring about these cost of living problems and instead heavily welcomes remote work well before it becomes a trend.
I'd say it's worth a sped up watch until covid hits and it just becomes a zoom call recording with lots of people complaining about having to crunch alone. If you can tolerate a SF studio and all of the bullshit politics and sensibilities that come with it.
Tl;Dr double fine is a very dysfunctional studio that has never had a firm dev pipeline. Tim Schafer is unwilling to truly lead but is still a domineering studio head, who will put his finger in the pie when it's already in the oven.
I suspect Microsoft closes the studio at some point as double fine has never made a game that sold well.
Name one good Tim Schafer game ever. He's always been a hack Reddit faggot even back in the 90s.

he doesn't want to. We've already seen he's a girl-dad male feminist.
I also saw him run off the first advisor who talked back to him on Broken Age so he clearly has pull to do what he wants.

it seems... small?
that's one of the thing about the xbox acquisitions (before the huge ones) that never made sense to me.
i think a reasonable assumption would be that msft would buy a bunch of these smaller studios and then throw money and resources at them to scale up and make more ambitious marquee titles
but i don't think that's happened in a single case?
it's just been very similar stuff to what the studio was already doing.

The idea with the indie buyouts were to bulk up their exclusive library with interesting titles. Pretty much all the games released by those studios have been well received, but they haven't really made a splash because Microsoft doesn't market games at all and has been blowing smoke the entire generation so they aren't making big splashes in the gaming scene either.

To be fair, We Happy Few had a big splash on Youtube when it was in early access and reviewed well, so it was probably just a bigger blip on their radar when they were scouting for random indie companies they could buy out. South of Midnight also reviewed very highly with consumers and didn't sell like shit like Keeper. I imagine Microsoft will keep some of these indie studios around purely to have a few critical darlings pumped out to look like a studio with prestige when they eventually drop half a billion on another shitty Halo reboot.

A walking sim is an open space where the gameplay is you walking and exploring.
A 2d game does not have that, walking right and left on a 2d plane is not a "simulation" of anything.
Modern usage of "walking sim" is just "this game doesn't have combat" or even worse: "i think this game is boring."

>The studio behind Sackboy and Dreams, MediaMolecule, has reportedly been shut down by PlayStation
> MediaMolecule's new project has been canceled following a thorough review by SIE JAPAN executives.
> The project has been classified as provocative and unprofitable
> According to close insiders, this project was a life-sim GAAS set in a futuristic world with a Corporate Memphis art style.
> The project would have been the last chance for Sony's senior management to make MediaMolecule profitable.
> Some executives wanted Playstation Studios to provide multiplatform support for Dreams and even mobile support in view of the popularity of Roblox and Minecraft.
> The then director of Playstation Studios, Hermen Hulst, reportedly denied this, arguing that Dreams would not impress the market due to its graphics.
> Hermen Hulst would have bet on MediaMolecule's GAAS project, calling it "The Roblox of PlayStation."

It's the classic Artist vs Business situation.
Realistically there is no creating without compromise when it comes to business, unless you're Valve and you can just pour money into dead ends without caring.
What would the game be if Tim was honest? Probably wouldn't have released. Like a business often has to lie and cheat to survive, often times artists do too. Most don't though.

>DF regularly did a month long game jam where they would stop whatever they were working on and allow anyone at the studio to pitch a basic game idea, even non devs
>people would vote on the pitches they liked and split off into a handful of small teams to make prototypes of these games during the month and then present them to everyone at the end
>this let people try new skills and identify potentially interesting new game ideas; an entire level of psychonauts 2 came from this (cooking show)
>ms buyout happens and the exec is having a meeting with all the staff
>Tim mentions their game jam and says it's very important to them that the staff knows that their pitches belong to them, even if they don't get picked up by DF, and wants to make sure they can keep doing that
>exec is like "yeah I'll have to check with legal, but no going forward we're going to own all the ideas"

Itโs a great doc when itโs actually on-point. So many eps like the one where almost the entire length is the devs taking a whole day off work to nail-bite and then celebrate the 2020 election can be skipped. The gameplay lead Zak trying to wrangle the devs who have been used to doing the bare minimum and coasting off Kickstarter + Fig into making a normal game while Tim Schafer hides away in his office like heโs writing a Game of Thrones level story in scale and intricacy, but doing that wrangling in the most incompetent manner is incredibly funny to watch. Every aspect of Double Fine is just a disaster, and only when theyโre coddled by Microsoft with bags of money and a firm release date do they actually start to make the game after almost half a decade of screwing around.
The one game designer Amy (?) who called out them for implementing crunch when they barely had any ideas for the game and it was still almost 3 years out was the only likable one by the end.

It's worth picking up for cheap on steam.
The biggest flaw is it was sold as a story driven 3rd person hack and slash and while that is true for the very beginning it soon becomes a repetitive rts game.
The rts gameplay is fun but it was super disappointing on release because of the bait and switch.

Thereโs a great story about an independent developer funded by a โgeniusโ killing its golden goose of crowdfunding, then selling off their other revenue streams for scraps to survive, only then in the end render it all for nothing to put itself in line for inevitable execution as one of Microsoftโs Gamepass slop producers. But instead of covering that the hack documentary creators tell a story about how one of them got to live out his dreams of being a game designer and gloss over all issues at the studio in single episode discussions.

Tim Schafer is retarded. He doesn't even know what the players want. He has no understanding of how to appeal to gaymers or how to market.
You can't even look up this game because he chose such a generic name that nothing comes up if you look for it. Didn't even hear they were working on a game.
Zero marketing, no buzz. Of course the game dropped to no players. And now if you look up ''double fine keeper'' the first thing that comes up is articles saying it's a flop, so no one is going to buy it.

Keeper looks fine but its not the game they need right now. I know asking for more Psychonauts is too much after the documentary, but games LIKE it with a smaller scale are what will sell. And games written by Tim specifically, his sense of humor is what makes the studio. I'm sure the rest are also talented, but we are here mainly for him. Notice how it's the projects he leads that get all the attention, because those are the most interesting to play. You can feel however you want about Broken Age and Brutal Legend, you'll have a lot more to think and say from them than Costume Quest or whatever that space game was called.

It was a LOT more than yearly, between GH and RB there were up to a dozen releases a year.
But it would have happened anyway, if they had tried to do semi regular releases then Rock Band would have eaten all their lunch. It was a race to the bottom there.
"The guy comes out and says I'm a prick," Kotick told the latest issue of Edge magazine.
"I've never met him in my life โ I've never had anything to do with him. I never had any involvement in the Vivendi project that they were doing, Brรผtal Legend, other than I was in one meeting where the guys looked at it and said, 'He's late, he's missed every milestone, he's overspent the budget and it doesn't seem like a good game. We're going to cancel it.'
"And do you know what? That seemed like a sensible thing to do. And it turns out, he was late, he missed every milestone, the game was not a particularly good game..."

Meanwhile Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Obsidian will continue to release games that make less money or continue gamepass subs with no interference from M$. Yet somehow Bobby Kotick got the blame for what was really Tim's fault. And we saw this same story play out on 2's development. Except that time he was burning through mismanaged crowdfunding money.

In corporate these decisions are made months in advance and simply any attempt to alter course will be turned down by 10 different screeching execs from budget and planning divisions that they canโt change on a dime (despite being able to invest a stray hundred million or even billion into some random execโs idea whenever they want). So instead everything comes down to prestige that some C-Suite guy can put in LinkedIn: Double Fine despite only having a couple great games over nearly 30 years has a rep as an indie darling so theyโll keep it, while Ninja Theory makes BAFTA awards bait + therapycore games that can stock an award cabinet so theyโll be kept.

I am currently replaying through the original Psychonauts, and man it is just fucking unconditionally even dowsing shit has its purpose, though the game should have FORCED you to grind earlier during the day great. Not sure how many technical improvements PC version got post-release, but what sort of fucking anemic husk of a man do you have to be to just dismiss it entirely. It has tons of flavor and distinct designs and an eclectic mix of different mechanics, all-tied with a non-committal overworld exploration that ensures you'll find SOMETHING to like about the game. All the variant dialogue that changes each step of the quest, like a classic RPG, countless details and assets that create a sense of a greater world and established personalities, pulpy plot that gets going quickly and never gets too cliche.
Double Fine's fumbles are well known, and I will not lament their demise, but I refuse to acknowledge any "always been trash" claims. Psychonauts was certainly a lightning in a bottle, like many great games, and subpar performance is a terrible first impression. But you don't make stuff like bespoke quest item dialogue or levitation physics or even just Razputin's go-getter attitude without some understanding of what makes games fun to engage with. I can gush even longer if we get to comparisons to the sequel, what a shitshow that was.

Itโs typical forum exaggeration on their flaws. Double Fine has made great and good games alongside complete shitshows like most other dev studios, but even their quality ones have the same consistent issues with little excuse for not having been ironed out by now. Itโs any other corporate game dev where any design knowledge is lost with devs being fired or laid off, but itโs masquerading as a developer collective. Plus Tim Schafer consistently steps on rakes and he preceded a lot of modern game devs of being outspoken on Twitter about how proud he is of his mistakes and his political opinions by a solid 5 years.

Both the documentaries done on them shows how much Tim and Double Fine as a whole resent a lot of their games as obligations (see how Tim talked about Psycho 2 prior to it being made and how he talks about a potential 3rd plus Brutal Legend 2 to this day) despite putting themselves in that positions by making their game announcements into get rich quick schemes with early access and crowdfunding. Spacebase probably would have been abandoned before being announced if it hadnโt been someone getting the idea they could get paid for a game before they even had a 1.0. Itโs just most devs donโt abandon early access games due to the reputational damage associated with it unless theyโre small enough to pivot and change their name or donโt have any sense of shame like Olโ Timmy Schafer.

So instead of a game selling a few hundred thousand copies over its life, it gets a few million streams from Gamepass and microsoft gives them a "representative" cut of streaming fees. Its a brilliant move by Microsoft to make all of their studios now actually dependent on MS to float because now they don't see large enough sales to justify a separation from MS plan.
One positive you can give it is now medium sized teams under Microsofts ownership can put out anything they want because sales don't matter.

What makes a joke funny isn't how offensive or inoffensive it is, but how well-written, well-timed and witty it is. It requires quick observation and delivery to make a good joke. There are funny and unfunny offensive jokes just as there are funny and unfunny tame jokes.
The problem with mainstream Western culture is that that doesn't exist anymore in any real capacity. All the good writers for Hollywood, vidya and every other medium is dead or retired and the younger blood is unfunny as fuck to a ridiculous degree.
I think it's the same thing going on in most other entertainment industries, where execs hire mediocre composers/writers/developers as a cost-cutting measure to make a mediocre product that will return dividends since it was made on the cheap.

an actual funny joke is when someone tries to write a funny joke and isn't worried about if it's offensive or not, in today's world everyone first asks "how can I not piss the mob off?" not "how can I make people laugh" hence you get nothing funny, offensive or otherwise, because everyone is so paranoid

>where execs hire mediocre composers/writers/developers as a cost-cutting measure to make a mediocre product that will return dividends since it was made on the cheap.
It's not just about talent level its about art being turned into a product. When art is a product what a creative, weird person wants to make no longer matters. What matters is appealing to the lowest common denominator. The other anon is right that offending people is part of that but that also means offending anyone, on any issue. Nothing should take a strong stance. There's other issues with art as a product though; nothing should be too complicated, nothing should be too weird, everything must be marketable. These lead to things that make a lot of money but aren't all that good. Everyone complains about the constant remakes, revivals and cross-over Fortnite-iffication of things but everyone also keeps buying this shit because it makes money reliably.

So basically art by committee and for the sake of profit (which will always be safe and inoffensive) rather than art by inspiration and for the (primary) sake of expression (which may be very offensive, but it will always be real).
Yeah, there's definitely been a downturn in the artistic culture of at least America to where there's no mainstream apparatus for anything artistic to appear due to it being "weird" or "unorthodox", which really means it puts shareholders off because they don't know if they can make money off of it. I think that's one of the main driving forces behind a lot of the 1990s and 2000s nostalgia for zoomers and younger millenials, since while things really didn't go south until the 2010s in terms of artistic authenticity and creativity, those were the last couple of decades where such things could exist in the mainstream public consciousness.
I do think things are just generally worse than the past, but the lack of actual art is making it worse since our corporate overlords have convinced themselves that we can subsist on simulacra of human experience rather than the real thing on multiple fronts of the human experience. It's no surprise everyone is so depressed and anxious since they've been denied the opportunity to be human.
