Double Fine released and abandoned Spacebase DF9 in early access because it didn't sell enough. The burn rate of their SF office is crazy. It's clearly an excuse for Tim Schafer to be a hipster.

It was very interesting but not particularly good, after a short intro that makes it seem like it's going to be a music themed action game it does a hard turn into an action-RTS hybrid that doesn't control very well. Driving around doing sidequests with the car and listening to the radio is fun enough to justify what it probably costs these days though.

So fucking what? That doesn't mean your mid-tier studio should occupy luxury real estate. It's bad business management. It just hurts your employees by forcing them to commute from further away, more affordable areas.

The boomers destroyed real estate, Tim Schafer included. People are being displaced. Tim Schafer isn't helping.

Watch the Psychonauts 2 documentary and youll understand everything.

Schafer is still a hilarious genius but hes pretty much hands ofd outside of writing. Studio got overrun wirh liberal whiners and fags and he cant say no to any of them.
They had a lead who designed Bioshock 2 as the Psych 2 lead but ran him off because he was using logic about scheduling and design to get the game shipped on time. Then the people who whined about him quit anyway, the game was super late, and they finished and had some quality purely because they ended up doing the things he said to do in the first place.

They need to stick to Schafer written point and clicks and he needs to take the reigns but he doesnt want to or is too old now. Brutal Legend, Psyxhonauts 2, Broken Age, and just about every game since DoubleFine became a company has been a letdown.
He peaked at LucasArts

i can't remember the specifics but tim would lie to producers about stuff like how far along they were into development of certain areas because he didn't wanna cut anything despite missing all deadlines and being way over budget, and when they found out it was usually too late, something like that

Personal stories, drama, stressing finances, the buyout, covid, their game jam, etc take up way too much of it.

I would say its far too long to be worth it. Someone should edit down the interesting bira, it could probably fit into 2-5 hours.

I watched all of it over a month or two for similar reasons of wanting to see an more indepth look at Game dev. It's pretty good on the design front the whole time you see every level in the game throughout the stages of dev. Doc is light on the writing process for obvious reasons of it being a one man job and art is just kinda brainstormed then approved or "doesn't fit" Tims vision. The music and programing are mentioned and shown as much as a red headed stepchild.
There is also a heavy underlying theme about how almost everyone working at the studio has to commute to work and even some staff members outright leave or become remote due to SF cost of living crisis. Tim largely seems uncaring about these cost of living problems and instead heavily welcomes remote work well before it becomes a trend.
I'd say it's worth a sped up watch until covid hits and it just becomes a zoom call recording with lots of people complaining about having to crunch alone. If you can tolerate a SF studio and all of the bullshit politics and sensibilities that come with it.
Tl;Dr double fine is a very dysfunctional studio that has never had a firm dev pipeline. Tim Schafer is unwilling to truly lead but is still a domineering studio head, who will put his finger in the pie when it's already in the oven.
I suspect Microsoft closes the studio at some point as double fine has never made a game that sold well.

I also saw him run off the first advisor who talked back to him on Broken Age so he clearly has pull to do what he wants.

It's the classic Artist vs Business situation.

Realistically there is no creating without compromise when it comes to business, unless you're Valve and you can just pour money into dead ends without caring.

What would the game be if Tim was honest? Probably wouldn't have released. Like a business often has to lie and cheat to survive, often times artists do too. Most don't though.

Itโ€™s a great doc when itโ€™s actually on-point. So many eps like the one where almost the entire length is the devs taking a whole day off work to nail-bite and then celebrate the 2020 election can be skipped. The gameplay lead Zak trying to wrangle the devs who have been used to doing the bare minimum and coasting off Kickstarter + Fig into making a normal game while Tim Schafer hides away in his office like heโ€™s writing a Game of Thrones level story in scale and intricacy, but doing that wrangling in the most incompetent manner is incredibly funny to watch. Every aspect of Double Fine is just a disaster, and only when theyโ€™re coddled by Microsoft with bags of money and a firm release date do they actually start to make the game after almost half a decade of screwing around.

The one game designer Amy (?) who called out them for implementing crunch when they barely had any ideas for the game and it was still almost 3 years out was the only likable one by the end.

And games written by Tim specifically, his sense of humor is what makes the studio. I'm sure the rest are also talented, but we are here mainly for him. Notice how it's the projects he leads that get all the attention, because those are the most interesting to play. I am currently replaying through the original Psychonauts, and man it is just fucking unconditionally even dowsing shit has its purpose, though the game should have FORCED you to grind earlier during the day great. Not sure how many technical improvements PC version got post-release, but what sort of fucking anemic husk of a man do you have to be to just dismiss it entirely. It has tons of flavor and distinct designs and an eclectic mix of different mechanics, all-tied with a non-committal overworld exploration that ensures you'll find SOMETHING to like about the game. All the variant dialogue that changes each step of the quest, like a classic RPG, countless details and assets that create a sense of a greater world and established personalities, pulpy plot that gets going quickly and never gets too cliche.
Double Fine's fumbles are well known, and I will not lament their demise, but I refuse to acknowledge any "always been trash" claims. Psychonauts was certainly a lightning in a bottle, like many great games, and subpar performance is a terrible first impression. But you don't make stuff like bespoke quest item dialogue or levitation physics or even just Razputin's go-getter attitude without some understanding of what makes games fun to engage with. I can gush even longer if we get to comparisons to the sequel, what a shitshow that was.

Spacebase probably would have been abandoned before being announced if it hadnโ€™t been someone getting the idea they could get paid for a game before they even had a 1.0. Its a brilliant move by Microsoft to make all of their studios now actually dependent on MS to float because now they don't see large enough sales to justify a separation from MS plan.
One positive you can give it is now medium sized teams under Microsofts ownership can put out anything they want because sales don't matter.

What makes a joke funny isn't how offensive or inoffensive it is, but how well-written, well-timed and witty it is. It requires quick observation and delivery to make a good joke. There are funny and unfunny offensive jokes just as there are funny and unfunny tame jokes.

The problem with mainstream Western culture is that that doesn't exist anymore in any real capacity. All the good writers for Hollywood, vidya and every other medium is dead or retired and the younger blood is unfunny as fuck to a ridiculous degree.

I think it's the same thing going on in most other entertainment industries, where execs hire mediocre composers/writers/developers as a cost-cutting measure to make a mediocre product that will return dividends since it was made on the cheap.

It's not just about talent level its about art being turned into a product. When art is a product what a creative, weird person wants to make no longer matters. What matters is appealing to the lowest common denominator. The other anon is right that offending people is part of that but that also means offending anyone, on any issue. Nothing should take a strong stance. There's other issues with art as a product though; nothing should be too complicated, nothing should be too weird, everything must be marketable. These lead to things that make a lot of money but aren't all that good. Everyone complains about the constant remakes, revivals and cross-over Fortnite-iffication of things but everyone also keeps buying this shit because it makes money reliably.

So basically art by committee and for the sake of profit (which will always be safe and inoffensive) rather than art by inspiration and for the (primary) sake of expression (which may be very offensive, but it will always be real).

Yeah, there's definitely been a downturn in the artistic culture of at least America to where there's no mainstream apparatus for anything artistic to appear due to it being "weird" or "unorthodox", which really means it puts shareholders off because they don't know if they can make money off of it. I think that's one of the main driving forces behind a lot of the 1990s and 2000s nostalgia for zoomers and younger millenials, since while things really didn't go south until the 2010s in terms of artistic authenticity and creativity, those were the last couple of decades where such things could exist in the mainstream public consciousness.

I do think things are just generally worse than the past, but the lack of actual art is making it worse since our corporate overlords have convinced themselves that we can subsist on simulacra of human experience rather than the real thing on multiple fronts of the human experience. It's no surprise everyone is so depressed and anxious since they've been denied the opportunity to be human.

It's superhero shit. Quipshit is always how comics were written. It just seems more prominent because we've been forced for nearly two decades now to treat men in tights pretending to shoot CGI lasers t each other as serious cultural experiences. No superhero movie not starring Batman is worth anything culturally long term. And even then just a few of them.

Oh give it a rest.
Everyone else already makes everything look pretty or more and more 'realistic'.
Having an exaggerated and ugly style is refreshing.

It was ugly when everyone made their cartoons look like this 20 years ago and is still ugly. Being the sole guy in your industry who can't let the one ugly style go doesn't deserve praise. He's the last guy still eating shit after the shit eating fad died. You want me to praise him for that?

Tak had nice environments.
But yeah Schafer has always been pro-ugly, considers it punk. Some people just have bad taste.

>Broken Age
Everybody was hoping for another Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle or Full Throttle, but they got total fucking shit instead. Honestly, it's appalling how bad the game turned out to be.

He's very clearly talking about it being a GOOD adventure game since that's the commonality between all the games he listed. Moron.
