Rennala is the most powerful living sorcerer, Ranni seems to be dramatically more powerful (to the point that the player can't actually kill her in any way) but she's not exactly "alive" as a doll, Azur and Lusat are both in some odd ascendancy state where most of their bodies have crystallized into glintstone from looking directly into the Primeval Current. Notably Sellen implies they're instrumental to making the Raya Lucarian academy an uncontested world power again instead of just able to defend itself even against the Golden Order, it's probable the academy was using their bodies as some kind of magical focus or battery or something.

Depends entirely on what build you're going for, gimme an idea of what you want to do in the game or if you want to go into magic; magic is probably the most viable and varied it's ever been in a Souls game, owing to miracles/incantations now also having pyromancy folded into it, even if this does mean you're either a projectile spammer or you're a weapon buffer like most other Souls games

Head south to Castle Morne. Its the real tutorial area.
Level VIG to your necessary buffer ASAP. Leave other stats for later.
The endgame of the main game is balanced around 40 VIG. The Haligtree and DLC is balanced around 60 VIG.

Hokey-dokey, unga it is
>There's a Lordsworn Greatsword in a chest a short ways from where you found Torrent if you haven't already gotten it yet
>Stormveil Castle has large Black Knight or Lothric Knight styled enemies and can drop a Banished Knight's Greatsword with the flipping R1s from Dark Souls 2 swords, if that's more your style
>Knight enemies for each faction (Godrick Knights, Cuckoo Knights, etc.) with a greatsword and greatshield can also drop a Knight's Greatsword, a longer sword than BK but it has marginally worse stats, same moveset
>Elden Ring in general is way harsher on player execution than the previous Souls games as far as boss AI, be patient and generally try to roll *into* bosses rather than *away* from them
>Elden Ring is also not actually made to be soloed, once you find Spirit Ashes and other pseudo-multiplayer items, don't be afraid to use them
>Armor is fashion, as ever, Vagabond armor like what you chose is a pretty good heavy set
>Head down to the Weeping Peninsula to the south of your starting point, that's kinda where you're supposed to fuck off to if you get walled by the Tree Sentinel, anything more east/northeastward bound towards Caelid, or you're having trouble with Margit on your way to Stormveil Castle in the north/northwest
>Element typings matter REALLY HARD for some specific enemies, most prominently for undead against Sacred, do experiment with element typings later even if you don't meet the stats for good scaling on them; Death Rite Bird minibosses are absolutely shredded by basically any Sacred infusion or similar sword buff, whether you have the Faith for it or not
>Boss weapons/unique weapons are hilariously easier to upgrade than normal weapons, somber smithing stones are easier to come by than smithing stones in early/midgame
>Vigor also matters really hard in Elden Ring, generally suggested to have around 40 on the stat, leveling comes a bit easier than in Dark Souls because it's an enormously bigger game

>to the point that the player can't actually kill her in any way
You never try to. The game doesnโ€™t even let you, and it also doesnโ€™t let you attack her mother. We do know she (Ranni) can kill you instantly, though. Although it may just have been a gag/joke.

That being said. How would you even kill who/what is essentially a spirit? Sheโ€™s like Shabriri in that she possesses forms. She made that puppet for her spirit to inhabit.

Even Sellen can astral project, and Azur and Lusat are probably doing this in their meditation. Sheโ€™s also โ€œimmortalโ€ (as said by Iji) before you kill Radahn and set the stars back in motion. Were Azur and Lusat in a similar position? Or are they simply invulnerable in a way there a step above the similarly near-invulnerable Crystalians? They also float meditation like Azur.

Some think Sellen might be a Carian, if Ijiโ€™s words are correct and Radahnโ€™s halting of the stars affected her fate like Ranniโ€™s. Some speculate Azur is an ancient ancestor of the Carians, too. His spell is found on their ancestral relic sword โ€” the Sword of Night and Flame โ€” and it was even recoloured (it was originally a deep dark blue like the other primeval spells, perhaps even the night sorceries) to Comet Azur before the gameโ€™s release. Raya Lucaria might mean โ€˜Royal Cariaโ€™ but it might also be a nod to how the Carians are related to the school in its origins.

The Carians are a mix of the Starks and the Targaryens lol. Itโ€™s a mistake to assume that Rennala was the first Carian queen. She established, RE-established, her familyโ€™s pedigree.

The Carians are a surviving family of the โ€˜old dynastyโ€™ that ruled a grand civilization a long time ago, like the Targaryens were a small part of the Valyrian freehold. The Carians revived their royal status the way the Starks are trying to revive their royal status. They were once kings and queens of note. The Carians are also associated with the cold and wolves, and a dragon serves them.

I also believe this. Azur and Lusat are based on the Sokushinbutsu of Sekiro as well. Revered corpse sages placed on pedestals and paraded around. Theyโ€™re more like highly dangerous, radioactive artifacts. โ€œComing into contact with the primeval currentโ€ might just mean coming into contact and interacting with a primeval sorcerer. Notice how the Karolos sorcerers are staying clear from Azur who is just around the corner. Lusat is kept in a vault in a cave.

Elden Ring makes Sacred damage typing pretty elective, it's mainly useful against undead enemies in keeping them down the first time or in ENORMOUSLY boosting the damage you deal against them. Trying to work as a paladin in this game will end up going pretty badly once you hit anything that resists it, the folding in of pyromancies to miracles under incantations is by design, you flip between fire or sacred depending on enemy resistances. Magic meanwhile is still its own element and it's kinda designed to overpower anything even if it's resistant to it, owing to sorceries still only having the one damage type outside of a VERY small number of fire sorceries. Dark and hexes don't have an equivalent, any spell effects hexes might have had would go under incantations or sorceries, but "black flame" stuff from pyromancies actually does have an equivalent under incantations and anything related to Destined Death.
>Also ive seen the final boss of the dlc so ive got the idea of how busted the roll is in this game compared to every other souls, but mechanically it will take a long to to master i assume
Yeah Promised Consort Radahn is probably the single worst enemy in anything From's ever made about it. A lot of people just cheese him with a 100% Sacred resist greatshield as a specific result of him being ass cancer to fight. Though getting through Elden Ring has the side-effect that any Dark Souls game you play, or Bloodborne, will be almost insultingly simple in comparison.

I did beat him post-nerf; phase 1 is barely worth mentioning, phase 2 he still attacks so relentlessly it was nauseating and I ignored the vast majority of what he did with a +8 Sacred black steel greatshield, so the actual endurance test was mostly in my stamina bar. The big walls for me against phase 2 Radahn were the meteor dive and getting my Mimic Tear out in time that Radahn would get off of my fucking dick. Oddly my Mimic Tear did a lot better with a sorcery staff strapped instead of a sword/shield, Radahn flies around so much that Teary boy had a hard time even attacking him to take aggro while I plinked at him with Comet.

The first place you get into that underground city that has the stars for the sky. I became a drooling retard just roaming around and watching the sky. Very soothing and thus 10/10. There's something about certain locations in Soulsborne (but I think anyone can make the case for medieval fantasy) that hit me fucking hard and my imagination goes wild thinking what it would be like to witness that magic in real life (all of it, not just the starry sky kek).

I absolutely love Undead Burg and Undead Parish, can't even tell you why exactly. Stone walls, cloudy climate, moss, you tell me, I just dig that ditch. In DaS2 there's a place that I haven't reached it yet, it has dragons flying around, sunlit everywhere, I think a bridge, too. I want to see that so I reinstalled the game to get to there, but Steam doesn't do cloud saves on DaS2 and even though my save is still in this machine, it didn't recognize it, so I dropped it. Sad, but alas, I'll see what Lies of P has to offer soon enough.

It's a funny feeling considering I think Bloodborne is a masterpiece because of the excellent gothic atmosphere, but I never even played the game yet. lol

Outside of specific quests and locations giving precise items nothing is mandatory. If you're using magic and want the moonlight sword though don't fuck up the ranni quest. Once I jinxed it by talking to wolf guy too late so I was locked out of it. You need to go back to the first merchant standing in the church close to the starting area and speak to him after exploring the mistwoods and hearing the howling of what's-his-name, get the emote, then go back to the ruins where he's perched and ise it so he'll drop and talk to you.
All that nonsense is just the beginning of a campaign long quest to get the coolest magic sword in the game so again with how unjustifiably random some quests are read a guide for it. Not something spoiling the full game, one giving important steps to not get busted midway by entering a wrong location at a time when you're not supposed to progress killing your quest.

If you're not using INT disregard all that shit.

>do not fall into the "roll+R1" autopilot mode, ER very much punishes this

ADVANCED

Morgott is great if you head right to him after beating Rennala or at least generally clearing Liurnia.
The problem is the non-linearity means that you can fight him, A.) after beating Rennala and clearing the cliff cave, B.) after beating Radahn, C.) after beating Rykard, D.) any combo of A and B and C, or E.) after doing any combination of the above and then exploring the Shunning Grounds and getting as far down as you can go before his barrier blocks you.
Anything other than A, results in a fight that is disappointingly short for as good as his moveset is. Especially if you push through the Shunning Grounds.

There are Nox that got buriedโ€”and then there are the Nox descendants remaining above the surface. You also have the lost descendants of the Nox, the Sellians, that dug their way out. Iโ€™m pretty sure the Nox resorted to risky alchemy to survive living underground and became a civilization of albinaurics. The irony is that they (the low status albinaurics) had a civilization once. The Sellians once bled silver. Albinaurics or at least the silver tears appear to have the ability to become human over time as a consequence of interbreeding. The now vacant Nox throne in Sellia attests to that much I think. They no longer need a giant woman to birth themโ€”like the albinaurics of today are trying to do with Philia.

Goldmask isnโ€™t Diogenes. Hierodas is.

โ€” According to some sources, on a visit to the Street of Sages, where Hierodas was living, Radahn asked Hierodas what he could do for him as the philosopher sat by the road reading a book. Hierodas replied โ€œแผ€ฯ€ฮฟฯƒฮบฯŒฯ„ฮทฯƒฯŒฮฝ ฮผฮฟฯ…โ€ (stand out of my light). He meant it quite literally. He needed for nothing and Radahn was blocking the Erdtreeโ€™s light. It is a statement typical of Hierodas, the ultimate minimalist, who valued simplicity and authenticity above all.

You are dead wrong. I played ER first and because I liked it I went back to play all the Souls games I hadn't touched before. DeS was a cool game but in terms of difficulty it was basically trivial in comparison. DaS 1 was also very, very easy though overall a bit more challenging. In DaS 2 you could feel that they began appropriating the "YOU DIED XDD" internet memes since it kind of felt like they were trying (for the first time) to make the game "hard" on purpose, whereas DeS and DaS1 were more like carefully crafted experiences that rewarded thought and a careful, cautious approach. This was especially visible in the DaS 2 DLCs where it felt like every shitter around just took like 2-3x less damage than the vanilla game, no matter what I threw at 'em. It still wasn't particularly hard overall, I never got "stuck" on anything or had major problems with any boss. DaS 3 kinda felt a bit more difficult, like it was "balanced" so everything you could do was just on the level of being effective but unimpressive, kinda like the DaS 2 DLCs. They tried VERY hard to make sure you didn't get any cool, awesome toys in this game and that all your tools felt viable, but ultimately just lukewarm. Still I wouldn't consider it particularly hard, except maybe some of the DLC bosses.

ER has far, far harder bosses, though it is also true that they rolled back the DaS 3 design and give you far, far more impressive tools to deal with them as well. Overall it's still harder, even just the vanilla game. My playthrough of SotE (early after release, before any nerfs) was far harder than anything else. It felt like they went back to the DaS 2 DLC / DaS 3 design where all your shit is just lukewarm and barely effective, but at the same time also dialed up the bosses into high speed blenders. Beating nuRadahn took me like 2-3h of attempts and before him I don't think I took more than like 30 minutes on any other non-SotE boss. Way, way harder.

Iโ€™m still so fucking mad and frustrated that the only summon spell (Tibiaโ€™s Summons) is downright dog shit. There are multiple ways to get synthetic high DEX for casting speed, so pumping the stat really doesn't make a ton of sense unless its for melee damage.
But in that case, you should instead level STR and use the multiple really good innate STR/INT weapons in the game or all the great Cold infused heavy weapons.

I was fighting something, I think it was the grafted scion in Stormveil, when I backed up into an elevator shaft and fell to my death. The screen didn't fade out until my character hit the ground so I was able to see the big Prince of Death face that I landed in front of. I then spent the next couple of hours trying to figure out how the fuck to get down there and see what the hell that was I had died in front of before finally realizing I could jump over the railings around the castle after assuming until then that there would've been invisible walls at the level boundaries because I was so used to that in their other games.
So that led me to discovering the bottom of Stormveil with the Prince of Death thing down there, which tied into Rogier's questline, which lead into Ranni's questline and tied into Fia's questline, and it was altogether the most kino shit I've ever experienced in 30 years of video games.
The other most memorable moment was finally killing the Baleful Shadow near the end of Ranni's quest when she thanks you and leaves, and there's an elevator right after the fight and I just assumed now that the quest was over it'd take me back up to the surface since I had delved so far underground for so long, only to surprise me by going down even deeper to the Lake of Rot. I was so sure by then that I had gotten a good idea of just how large the game world was and it still managed to surprise me.

But the primeval sorcerers are also based on those undying mummy monks (the Sokushinbutsu) in Sekiro (glintstone is parasitic like the worms/centipedes) so you canโ€™t exactly DO anything to themโ€ฆ

Sellen describes Azur as a good judge of character. Presumably this means he will respond to persons that interest him. She also describes Lusat as a child of the stars. Sellen might also just be insane, attributing personalities to rocks (in which case their โ€œevictionโ€ was probably more like relocating a pair of highly radioactive artifactsโ€ฆ) that are closer to corpses than people. The academy might have seen them as corpse sages to decorate and place on pedestals to parade around. Perhaps the Carians saw it as a mentally disturbed practice akin to a death cult. Thereโ€™s no way she would have taken herself out of commission when she was planning on becoming the new headmistress of the school. She also would not have shoved herself in with a bunch of sorcerers she disapproved of. Notice how all of her graven masses only contain the conspectuses that went against the primeval current. Also, even if she WAS planning on balling herself, her ball would likely have been far nicer than that. She likely had greater constructions in mind, just considering all the similarities between her experiments and the experiments of the Hornsent. She didnโ€™t have a whole culture (the school reviled her) backing her twisted theories, while the Hornsent had a whole culture backing theirs. The primeval sorcerers are also very similar to the tutelary deities of the Hornsent, except they (the primeval) are actually alive in some form.

>Residual life, not life in general
Life is life. The amber or sap of the Erdtree is just distilled residual life through its roots. Sacrificed lifeblood is seen to turn back into (red) glintstone.

>Glintstone is the life of stars. Two different things.
Nope.

โ€” We study the stars, and examine the life therein. Are you familiar with our findings? Long ago, we began as stardust, born of a great rupture far across the skies. We, too, are children of the Greater Will. Is that not divine? Is that not sublime? ...and yet, none can fathom its implications, its utter brilliance!

The Elden Beast was a star itself. Life is colored blue in Souls games. Youโ€™ll notice that life functions just fine away from the purview of the Erdtree.

โ€” Ancestral spirits exist as a phenomenon beyond the purview of the Erdtree. Life sprouts from death, as it does from birth. Such is the way of the living.

Runes are a psyop to hijack evolution the same way Lavos did in Chrono Trigger. It is sustenance for the Beast. It feeds on experience. Why do you think itโ€™s shaped like its previous subjects โ€” the ancient dragons? Itโ€™s quite obvious. It reinforces civilization and intelligence (by way of the Fingers) to produce greater and greater heights of experience to consume. They can just as easily take it all away. The beastmen werenโ€™t originally civilized, and theyโ€™re losing their intelligence during the events of the game. Similar to how the fire giants shrink and diminish and โ€œlose their mindsโ€ after renouncing their fallen god and ripping out his face from their chests and stomachs.

Evolution and patronage are big parts of this fame. Itโ€™s all stars. Nature competes with itself and acts like an infection. Even the yellow/gold of the Erd is infecting the ground. Glintstone does too. The frenzied flame infects plants and wildlife as well.

My issue with that is Sellen is pretty powerful.
If you fight her or fight with her, she's one of the stronger NPCs in the game.
In the world, it doesn't seem like there'd be many rivals to her that could shove her into a wizard ball in an area that is under a protection charm.
That is why I referenced Ranni as one of the only potential culprits, if not for her lack of motive.
None of the losers in Raya Lucaria could have done it without obviously leaving a trace.

Really I think its just a case of Sellen fucking up, and FromSoft being lazy on the model reuse.

Bayle ripped the Elden Beast/Ring out of Placidusax (he married himself - Iโ€™m serious - he had both male and female heads) and it fell to the earth and Marika found it and nurtured it and convinced a whole civilization to shive her people into pots and jars and eventually a godmaking gate. She used the fanatical Hornsent to figure out how to make life-fed trees. Itโ€™s why you see all those miniature Erdtrees in Enir-Ilim.

Killing Godrick and getting that sweet beautiful view of Liurnia for the first time, I liked setting my game to night time because I thought it was a cool gimmick, but when I saw that wondrous view overlooking a flooded town, drown by a sea of stars in the clear night sky, yet still the background visible enough to Mae out the Volcano Manor, and the Altus Plateau. I had just gotten off the high of beating Godrick, which had taken me a little over an hour due to lack of skill. The feeling was absolutely stunning, like nothing I've ever experienced before. Even if I now have 2k hours in the game, and see the same sights over and over, I'll never forget the first time I saw what was in my opinion one of the most visually stunning moments in my souls gaming career. Fromsoft are exceptionally good at the whole "enter new area, beautiful view ahead" camera angle that almost always perfectly pans over it as you sit at the local Grace. The feeling didn't stop until I beat the game, but that specific moment is etched into my memories forever.

Playing DS1 for the first time. The bosses are really easy compared to Elden Ring but the actual levels and fighting mobs is way harder. Even the weak ass hollows can tard rage you to death. In Elden Ring you can usually just bail or use your overpowered ash of war. In DS1 you're pretty much fucked if you didn't see an enemy and you get double teamed. When I fucked up it always feels like it is 100% my fault, in Elden Ring it often felt like I got the wrong RNG like when Malenia uses Water Fowl Dance 3 times per phase or Radahn keeps using his wombo combo.

PS: The Bed of Chaos took me 15 tries, the most of any boss by an order of magnitude. Cuck walks in this game are hideous.

They were always just making it up, but the move from having a successful scheme to them just starting to bullshit everything probably started after Marika fucked the world and all their chosen Empyreans either failed to thrive or went AWOL.
If the Two Fingers had their way, then Miquella would have teamed up with Radahn on day 1 and remade the Golden Order in whatever way they wanted, so long as they referred back to the Two Fingers for advice and instructions.
Given that they worked with the Dragons, Hornsent, and Marika, and most likely helped grant Miquella his godhood, I don't think the Fingers are picky about who is winning, as long as those guys are working for them.

Marika deciding to just lock everything down was totally new.

Beating Malenia on my 5th attempt like a week after it came out, with a Fingerprint Stone Shield +25, and a Greatshield Talisman -- this talisman along with the +25 F.P.S. Shield made it so you could block infinitely and never break guard and it also didn't cost stamina.
I poked her to death doing this with a Blood Lance +25 (ofc).

It was so much fun; they have long, long since nerfed that build and now it's still very viable but it's just nerfed, you know... it was only good for most bosses.
I also used the spear talisman so I could get an extra +15% damage from just spamming attacks endlessly at enemies through the shield guard -- if you attack enemies while they are attacking, it applies the +15% benefit. You can see how all that would be easy mode, it was.

There were some bosses that did elemental chip damage through your block, and they were hard.
I also remember struggling with some bosses' hitboxes due to the lance damage zone being so narrow; the weird massive laser skull-insect thing in some cavern was one.

Lance gang for life.
