>men and women wear exactly the same clothes
>Lumiose city is portrayed as this sprawling diverse human center, except everything looks terrible and the same, just the people are diverse
>entire city is falling apart with overgrown grass, animals taking over, and real estate all closed off to everyone with probably no one even living inside due to speculation
>first Pokémon game without any epic legends about the past, signifying the end of history
>you try escaping the city, just to wake up in a city that looks exactly the same
>no public infrastructure in the city being used, probably against carbon emissions or because people are too poor

This game is a modernist nightmare. I was expecting the credits to mention the World Economic Forum at the end. It truly portrays a decadent city enforcing curfew laws where homes are all unaffordable, there is no infrastructure, shops are all sealed against shoplifting and every building looks the same.

Has Gamefreak accidentally made the most perfect social critique in history while trying to make a shit game on purpose?

No, it's all that but it's just a massive renaissance theme park set. MC is on vacation where he can pretend to be a badass trainer from 1000 years ago when pokemon weren't all 100% domesticated. That's why you can't really get hurt and stuff too, safety field tech.

The tone is also all over the place. Pokémon usually has this adventure and excitement tone, and even when the characters here try to emulate it, the entire setting does not match that excitement. It is like being excited about picking King Arthur's sword from the stone, but instead of an epic hill, it is in the middle of dark crack den. You feel like you are taking part in a farce or falling in a trap.

This game is prime creepypasta material.

But the game also doesn't allow you to turn off the music, which is smart. Commentary on how people in their daily lives are wearing earpods because cities feel ever more silent because no one talks to each other.

Nothing looks lived in, but that is expected. Lumiose has been acquired by equity firms, only the most NPCs of the NPCs are living there. Infrastructure is not taken care of, buildings are all modernist hell, there are literal streets blockaded with debris in the no-go zones, you can get snuck behind and attacked.

There is some limited form of law enforcement, but they are only seen protecting the rich and powerful in their main schemes where they are "protecting" the city.

At night, the game makes sure to let you know that there is 0 law enforcement, the entire city goes into curfew.

Its a cry for help from the developers. The lenders represent the takeover of pokemon/nintendo. Its like how the first final fantasy was representative of what was going down in the company. Unlike final fantasy, ZA is what will definitively ruin the company's brand. Or maybe the Devs really hated the France corporate study and assets trip. Could also be that real sales is soo bad and the number buffer comes from the DEI crowd buying up stock in partner stores.
