There are literally hordes of gauls right next to you, if your first instinct isn't to subjugate them, you should uninstall.

I've never actually tried conquering the other two houses before the gauls, I assumed it would be really annoying and require a lot of cheese/luck

ROME HAS CONQUERED Segesta since it's the nearest foreign settlement and has no walls.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought there was something that prevented an early civil war and the actual strat was to rush the factions they were supposed to conquer to break their AI. For example, rushing Greece and Carthage as the Julii.

You play it until you realize that the battles are
almost non-functional and then you play a better game like Shogun 2 instead,
or Divide et Impera

I think you get a popup or something telling you not to attack Rome or the other families but it's been so long I don't remember. I do know that the Rome only faction always has one or two full stacks hanging around that would be pretty tough to beat in a straight up fight

you have to get enough popularity with the plebs in the senate menu by from conquering other settlements with generals to give "+ bonus popularity with the people" traits to them, then you'll get "a chance for power" event at the next end turn which will enable you to attack another roman faction
if you get low enough popularity with the senate (also by conquering and being "too ambitious") they even give you a senate mission telling you to kill yourself for the good of rome
spoilering the explanation because it was really cool to have this happen without knowing as a kid and doing it deliberately kind of spoils the surprise

My most fun campaign was playing as Sparta and reconquering the Alexander borders. Whenever one of the Romans sent a stack to attack I just used a diplomat to bribe them into fucking off since all my armies were in the east and I was swimming in money.

Unit pathfinding and behavior is extremely unreliable, to say nothing of the AI which is one of the worst in the series

Did you just say the oldest game has the worst AI compared to newer games in the series?
Anonymous No.723590112 [Report]

I agree that the pathfinding in battles is definitely the most egregious (and perhaps only major) flaw in RTW; it's not that noticeable in open-field battles but in settlements it's nearly unworkable without dozens/hundreds of hours in campaigns to finally learn how to wrangle your troops to actually follow orders
I'm still seething because I just lost half a battalion of 7 EXP cretan archers in Alexandria due to a fucked up arch in the middle of a path that they got stuck in with some random chariot mincing through them while its own pathfinding was fucking up
