lmao, now that more comparisons are being done, it turns out that this thing has worse performance and battery life than the Steam Deck.
The internal hardware is almost exactly the same as the Deck, but with this version of Windows still being less efficient than SteamOS.

For $600!!

Literally nobody on /v/ gives a shit about this console yet Asus wants us to believe the $1000 model is selling out everywhere, that could only be true if they only made like 20,000 units to begin with.
All threads about this garbage shitbrick dies on /v/ quick.

The real problem plaguing this console is Windows being a turd and Microsoft being lazy as usual. "Full screen experience" is just the Xbox app, you still have to update Teams to play vidya lmao.

At least it will lead to more games getting deck verified.

These things are just repurposed rog ally devices with the exact same chips. If you want better performance than the deck you get the Z1E/Z2E editions. The Z1 and Z2 are just there to bait retards like OP.

>but with this version of Windows still being less efficient than SteamOS.
It's not even really a new version of Windows, it's just the Xbox app automatically starting on launch and it not loading major aspects of the OS to retain about 2 GB of RAM for games. The dumbest part is that unlike SteamOS and Steam it actually downloads Windows 11 and other updates in the background which immediately causes a bunch of these processes to load back up and the performance drops like a brick as it tries to install them in the background.

People put Bazzite on it and claim it works if you use latest test version, but the wattage stuff is wonky and not working properly.

The display is the same but it's not a repurposed ROG Ally on the inside, it's actually significantly less powerful than the first ROG Ally from 2023 and seems to use Steam Deck OLED surplus components.
It's like they were trying to make the bare minimum cheapest device where hopefully all the Steam Deck Verified games would still run well enough on it... something that could be appealing at $400, not what they ended up doing

I have it. I like it.
Not worth 1K, but I've been playing it a lot.

I'm sure I would like it too if I had the black one, as it sounds like you do.
Unless/until it becomes steeply discounted I have no idea why anyone would choose the underpowered white one over competing handhelds

Idiots on reddit are buying it, so there is a market. My guess is they see the black one's price tag and get the white.

Microsoft is trying to catch the ignorant console userbase that doesn't really focus on the Steam Deck or others with this one. They have it plastered on the front page of your Series system, it's on the front page of the store when you go in it and it called itself a "ROG Xbox Ally" which implies it can play Xbox games. Problem is that when you actually boot up the store with your Xbox account and filter to games the thing can play your list basically disappears because it's only stuff that also works on PC with their "Play anywhere" moniker on it. There's also the price tag associated with each because $$600 vs. $1000 is a very steep difference especially right now.

They're essentially relying on ignorance and cheaping out to get you to buy the non-X model and even with the X model they're doing somewhat the same but actually trying with that one.

I do have the X model or whatever.
It's basically what I expected.
I have zero complaints other than I'd like to play my 360 games.... But I can just remote in or cloud play for that. Cloud play sucks though.

Hate: Windows, updates, armory crate takes some getting used to
Love: the feeling, the sound. In game responsiveness. The power is pretty good.

Mention: battery life is ok. Highly dependent on the game and settings.

I don't go to reddit and /v/ is my only vidya board. I have an Xbox Ally X.
What now?

I only had time to fuck around with my X last night. The bunch of updates and windows shit was a real downer. I also felt like button placement is wonky and I will have to adjust it. I kept hitting the button above the select button and it would take me into the windows big picture in the middle of a game. It took me a minute to figure out how to essentially tab back into a game.

The saving grace is that the system comes with 3 months of gamepass ultimate, so you can see what mostly syncs.
I find the confusing part NOT the "play anywhere" label, but the fact that there are some titles that are offered on PC and Xbox separately even though it's the same game. Some require separate purchases, most don't.
Like, yakuza and persona worked for me out of the box, but sonic racing didn't.

Make an account or sign into the various PC storefronts and try out the nextfest demos on Steam.
If you're a console player, welcome to PC gaming.

The updates are a killer man.
It's a real issue.
For me, the button placement was solved quickly. There is a way to rebind the buttons, but I didn't need to. The Xbox button was more than enough for me personally.

I'm also in the minority because I did try it out as a windows PC too. Man windows 11 is garbage. I remember why I don't miss it.
I know you guys are shitting on the full screen experience, but for me, it was fine. I liked it. Didn't get in the way. It makes me look forward to improvements, but this is Microsoft we're talking about.
Maybe there will be a custom rom or something from the community later.

Yes. I do.
I can't understate how good it feels in my hands.
At $1k? I can't recommend it unless you've got cash to burn, and don't already have a PC handheld.

Anyone tried halo infinite? I had a bunch of bugs and multiplayer ran at 40 fps at highest mode.

>Steam Deck 720p
>ROG Ally X 1080p.
720p in 2025, seriously?
My phone from 10 years ago already had a 1440p screen.
720p vs 1080p is more than twice the visual difference, retard.

the soc is way too shit for 1440p you moron
at a screen this small it doesn't really fucking matter, it's way into diminishing returns
Anonymous No.723584075 [Report]
>>723581945
That's fair. As someone with a high end PC, I just can't justify the cost when I can simply stream my more demanding games to my steam deck OLED anyway. I see the appeal though.

Even a $199 tablet from Temu comes with 1080p by default.
Saying “720p is fine on a small screen” is just an intelligence test for faggots.
