Why do people praise this franchise? Having played all of them, Chaos Theory is the only one that could be considered a good game, and even that is just barely there. The games are utterly mogged by basically any other stealth game, even games contemporary to them like MGS 2 and 3, Thief 3, Chronicles of Riddick, The Darkness, Hitman Blood Money, and Sniper Elite v2.

Splinter Cell is the only 3rd person stealth game that actively takes into consideration detailed sound and light components. I like MGS it's but it's incredibly arcadey and not really a shadow stealth game. Sniper elite isn't really a good stealth series.

Its varies from game to game. But in Splinter Cell 1 and 2 for example, levels are very basic as are enemy paths. There is always some obvious route through. It makes the game feel a lot like the Ocarina of Time stealth sections in the castle courtyard for example. Like they took a forced stealth segment and made a game out of it. As opposed to the other games I listed which have numerous viable routes, and give you creative ways to create even more viable routes.

Being 3rd person just drove home how ridiculous the light based gameplay is. You can stand in a shadow in the middle of a hall, being an obvious silhouette against a lit backdrop, and somehow enemies can't see you. Sure, that was true in Thief, but since you couldn't see yourself it didn't look nearly so ridiculous.
Anonymous No.723585587 [Report]
>>723585297
Yeah, I agree actually. Not a lot of replay value, basically one route through most missions with no real player agency. Later ones ironically had more open levels with more options to exploit but then fucked it up by becoming action games.

Splinter cell is kind of a cursed series when you think about it.

intravenous has the light-and-dark from splinter cell, still potent but not as exageratedly overpowered in stealth. but you can still go right through enemies in a pitch black room
on the flip side, the darkness, noise and stealth mechanics function greatly in actual combat and firefights. it actually does a great blend of stealth and action where both coexist and flow into another, but its still great for fully ghosting or near-fully-ghosting. Its also okay if you just want to shoot up everybody. an actual 'play your way' sorta game as long as you do it on True difficulty because the others suck
>>723584615 (OP)
SC1 and SCPT have their moments, notably the final levels of each are crushingly higher quality than anything else in the game, but theres so many mediocre levels before it
SCCT is at least more consistently better, and the side objectives, tapping into terminals, interrogations, etc are a tremendous improvement

SC1 and SCPT have lots of silly moments where youre genuinely better off just knocking out every enemy, but its boring, so youd rather intrinsically challenge yourself to ghost. But they do have their fair share of moments where KOs are hard/impossible and you really need to sneak through. SCCT on the other hand is almost entirely 943943242x easier if you just knock out enemies, but it at least makes it actually more fun, even if just superficially/aesthetically, by adding all the funny interrogations, not making bodies automatically get detected when perfectly hidden just because theyre not in the dark, adding the side objectives, etc etc. When i replayed the game after doing a 100% score i realised it gets even better if you give zero shits about the score and just have fun instead

Splinter Cell was always the poor man's Metal Gear. Hideo Kojima was a genius who knew how to tell a compelling narrative about Americans and their corruption. Ubisoft didn't get that memo and instead decided to go full "America, Fuck Yeah!" with these propaganda ridden games. Of course, Tom Clancy only exploded in popularity after 9/11, where every American became some zealous patriot, feeding into these games like pigs to slop.

most great games and great series dont need to 'find their footing'
matter of fact is that SC games, while cool, are heavily carried by their style and aesthetic (hiding in the dark, cool spy guy, etc) rather than the gameplay itself being actually well made. theres no excuse for so many railroaded levels where youre following the set path by the developers, or all these sections where knocking out enemies is brainless but actually ghosting past them is a pain in the ass, or segments where youre just waiting 999 years for the character to finish climbing something like the stupid train level

yeah sure its a 23 year old game but thats not really something you should judge games on, theres shit from 25-30+ years ago that are still extremely great and maybe even uncontested in their qualities

Splinter Cell gotta be one of the most propped up series by Xbots ever. Literally just a series of linear hallways where you wait for guards to walk past. At lest other stealth series like MGS and Hitman do different things with the concept, Splinter Cell is just a watered down Thief for babies.

He really did. MGS wanted to makes games more like movies by removing interactivity and adding cutscenes. Half-Life wanted to make games more like movies by preserving interactivity and adding intricately scripted cinematic sequences that use visual and audio cues to subtly manipulate players to experience them the way the director intended. And the industry abandoned Valve's idea and went with Kojima's idea. Metal Gear Solid has had an overwhelmingly negative impact on the industry, and we can hardly imagine what kind of masterpieces ended up never existing in the last 25 years due to Kojima's influence alone.
Though, half the blame is on his fans. If there just weren't that many retards with zero standards, the moviegame design wouldn't have taken off.

A game being strictly linear isn't really a point against it, and likewise open-endedness isn't inherently meritorious. Most platformers only have one solution for example, as well as puzzle and rhythm games, obviously. It's a test of execution. Splinter Cell's mechanics are obviously more robust than the usual minigame.

Chaos Theory is pretty fun. You often have more options for handling enemies than you might think. For example, the obvious way of handling the Displace International mission is to let everybody present for the meeting leave the room and go their separate ways, but you can also chuck a smoke grenade down into the room while they're all clustered and quickly knock everybody out. (You even get some unique dialogue for doing it.)

It is a very linear/setpiece heavy game, but there's a ton of clever interactivity if you're willing to experiment and keep your eyes open. It's a massive improvement over the first two games.

Being restrictive is why it's fun. Scenarios are set up more like puzzles than just you sort of winging a solution together. If the game gives you a very specific challenge to overcome it's fun overcoming it than just finding a hidden shortcut because "numerous viable routes, creativity..." blah blah blah. Both are fine approaches but one isn't inherently better than the other.

What a fucking stupid thing to even state. Games like Thief where it was one of the first in an unproven genre yet still (mostly) knocking it out of the park are the outlier. Starting out rough like Codename 47 is the norm.
Posting fucking Deus Ex as an example when the game is the definition of sum of its parts because when dissected, it is mechanically shittier than Splinter Cell or even Metal Gear Solid even at its best with full skills is the poorest fucking attempt at a joke I have ever seen.
