All SHMUPs have insanely boring and repetitive gameplay and there are no exceptions.
Hell, even Metal Gear Solid 4 tier movieslop would be an improvement over a SHMUP because the gameplay is so bad that not playing a SHMUP is more enjoyable than playing one, so the cutscenes would be a welcome respite
