is it actually a good idea to put out a great, fleshed out game as a demo in steam next fest?
i am genuinely clueless about marketing vidya but ive been wondering if its bad to mix your game with piles and piles of low quality things and theres 9999 mediocre demos around. as opposed to dropping your demo when you can have a bit more of a spotlight

this was absolute garbage, combat is terrible and janky, barely any combos besides some light and heavy attacks, there are some abilities but they just don't activate sometimes for whatever reason, maybe there's a cooldown or some shit but the UI clearly doesn't communicate anything and there's an awful magnetism to every attack making sure you won't actually target what you want, the roguelite map portion of this is as equally as terrible, with balancing all over the place when it comes to items and effects

You're vastly overestimating how much people care about stuff like this. Most people don't even know what Next Fest is. If people see a game that's being talked about on social media that appeals to them, then they play it and that's the end of it. They're not even going to notice it was in an event where 1000 Vampire Survivor clones were also present. The right word is promotion, not marketing. Nobody cares about a singular indie game's public image unless you give them a reason that's very hard to ignore. It's just a game. Not a brand.

There's no cooldown but abilities each need a differing amount of mana or whatever it was called, but the UI makes it fairly hard to tell at a glance. The game desperately needs a UI designer, among other things.

There's literally no better spotlight than this. At other times of the year, people hate demos. Many devs have said how Next Fest always gives them a boost in reach and wishlists.
But Steam is clear with its recommendation, Next Fest is a final push to a near launch, not a playground to throw in any personal project or experiment that they never finish and is just a beg for attention.

There's never any one good time to promote your game. You need to promote your game every single chance you get. As the other anon, said you need to rack up your wishlists and follower count. That's what the algorithm favors. Whenever I check a developer's socials, the good ones are always busting their ass promoting their game. Next Fest is just one of many avenues for them to do that.

Ground Zero is KINO

Played a ton of demos, almost none of them worth it. I think I'll skip out on the next Next Fest, as it's not a good time-to-fun ratio. Anyway, here's what I played, including a few leftovers from last fest:

Dishonored lite with janky controls and hideous graphics. I am over the fake PS1 games that just look ugly. Off the wishlist.

Another demo where you start out doing boring mundane stuff. The main character runs like his eardrums have been forcibly punctured. Hard pass.

Wishlisted, but I don't know if I'll get it. These kinds of indie games always seem they have a neat concept that never really goes anywhere.

This was...special. first you can only stun enemies with bottles and then suck them, don't know why you should do that instead of shank them, not like they are dangerous because they have no "attack" distance, is literally contact damage. There is a boss but no checkpoints, that means that I have to do the whole level, although short, is not fun. I don't recomend this, this doesn't even play like a stealth game, enemies have no back. maybe this is a speedrun game?

It was fun, I played with a wizard because why would I not zap monsters? Is not a game about speed, is an rpg, the magic system is about combining runes and using the spells you have, I don't think there will be more spells but they cover almost everything now. The art is fine, Yeah I liked it.

I suppose it was nice? I don't know, playing a CYOA without an ending and before anything interesting happens just feels like blue balls. I suppose it would be a nice way to kill sometime in the future when it comes out.

Is not really optimized or my pc is too old for this, had my settings at low and it still took like 5 minutes to load the models in game, it looked like I was fighting a ps5 game library. Once the models loaded and could play normally, I can compare this game to Bioshock in how it feels and move, no speed, slow as hell and the enemies are tanky unless you shot it's extremities, you can shot the legs and then stab them in the ground to conserve blood, blood is your ammo, your HP. The strange thing is that the reload button is space for some reason. In any case, this game is not my cup of tea and the demo was too short to see more potential, do like how it looks though.

The touhou Super Robot Wars is great.

I played 36 demos, and out of all of those, 3 made my wishlist

Insanely atmospheric hardcore rally sim but you're driving a space car. Everything from scouting out your route to tuning your car to maneuvering it around feels fucking sublime. There's a real adrenaline rush here as you try to push for fast times while the only thing keeping you from dying in a huge crash is your rapidly depleting thruster fuel supply.
I'm buying this day 1 and will probably be playing it for a long time to come.

Initially this looked bland as hell to me, but it turned out to be an incredibly tight combat experience. Despite being a Roguelite, it feels far more skill based than luck based, and the fighting is fast, furious and precise while not crutching on having iframe dodging at all.
As a bonus, the audio and music here are fantastic.

While this didn't impress me in the same way as the above games, it's the kind of game that's simply right up my alley. Wonderfully weird but with a really solid gameplay core that's just begging to be used in all kinds of interesting ways. I just hope the full game has some really cool boss fights.

Feel bad for these developers. They had a demo at one point but I guess the new build of the game had no time for a demo release. They are coming out on Halloween, which is a bit of a stiff market with all the other horror releases happening. I feel like good marketing would have been a demo followed by a rapid release afterwards.

Husband and Wife pair who quit their jobs to be gamedevs. I always hate to see people who chase their dreams and fail. Although to be fair, quitting your job at a game studio is probably a good thing, working in the "game industry" must be hell on earth. Being broke might be superior.

Anyway, I'll probably prioritize buying Echoes of the Living over Tormented Souls 2 since I think Souls will do well and I can wait for that one to be put on sale.

I just saw that content creators were playing it, I don't interact with that people either.

They tried to make an interesting platformer, but they didn't tell me what half of the collectables actually did and I just wasn't vibing with it in general. Not terrible, so worth playing to see if you like it. I got 20/22 stamps, probably had to retalk to somebody to collect them, but I almost never talked to somebody twice because there were no indicators to see if there was actual new dialog or not, so I couldn't be bothered. The combat is just a bit too rudimentary (maybe it gets more complicated later, but there was no indication of it at the time)

I hate the indie stone for their long running slow development too. But this is like the second time the chinks have tried to one up Zomboid and it's shallow as fuck compared to it. I suppose you could credit them for adding different enemy types. Revelation of Decay is just another variation of Zed Zone. Don't get me wrong both of these games are still way above most zombie survival RPG games out there, so it's never bad to have more options with games that are deeper than Surroundead/7 days to die slop. But I do not believe the indie stone will be surpassed any time soon. I suppose it's better than having only having CDDA to pick from. One thing both Revelation of Decay and Zed Zone have not mastered is Zomboids very tense combat in encounters with actual zombies. It's kind of laughable to suggest it's even close. The reason zomboid is so different is because every encounter spells actual danger. One wrongly timed missed swing and you get bitten. And even if you turn off infection mechanics every encounter is still dangerous regardless. If you're up against a large group you'll get fucked over anyway if you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I only played it a bit but it seems like a rather interesting realistic detective game. You visit the crime scene, investigate for evidences and snap some photos and then from your office try to solve the case. Very little in term of handholding. You're basically on your own.

I have a question: what's the point of putting Chinese games on the English speaking market of steam? I constantly see people saying they don't put their menus and interfaces in English for the demos. I'm pretty sure the actual Japanese speaking market is seperate on steam. So why do chink games slip through the cracks like this? put your games in ENGLISH for Christs sake. No. A roguelike is specifically, as the name states, LIKE ROGUE. Top down, 2D, RPG, turn based, yada yada.
Rogue LITE means "we did not want to make maps properly or add content so we just randomly gen them (or, more often, we made some maps and you do the same maps in every single run, but in a slightly different order).
Rogue lite literally just means the devs are lazy.

Okay folks, after looking at all 2880 games and playing the couple dozen demos that caught my eye, here is my final verdict:

Best of show: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. Yeah, this one was a foregone conclusion. They would've had to really mess things up for it to not get this spot.
Runner-up: YGGDRA REFRAIN. Basically a Priconne knock-off but in English and single player that is offline on the PC and is even in English. Sure, the translation does remind me of Breath of Fire II, but that is preferable compared to the typical English localization seen nowadays. I'd honestly take a Zero Wing translation over the typical modern localization.

These honorable mentions are the games I'm unsure about:
G-Rebels: Shows potential but the demo didn't show enough. Most of the mission types aren't present and there is only one story mission after the tutorial.
Power of The Horde: Looks interesting with how it can be played as either an RTS or RPG but only RTS mode is present.
Sunbreak War: Looks good but I'm not sure about it as an RTS/Roguelike because of how rewards are given out.

This one's probably a day 1 for me unless it's horribly overpriced. Demiurge simulator where you make bad stuff happen and your goal is to wipe out humanity. Seems to have some depth to it and there's meta progression, although I don't know what you can buy with the skill points you get, because you can't do anything with them in the demo.

Most polished production on the fest by far. Pure AA quality, this has to be made by industry veterans. Even though the enemy variety is low, they work well together and don't wait around. They get slightly more interesting once the variants spawn before the second boss, but they die so quickly it doesn't matter.
Game has major issues though - attack variety is very low, and the charged heavy always does the most dmg, no reason to combo. Nice to be able to dash cancel, but the game is easy enough as it is. The bomb and stamina handicaps help but the enemy attacks need to be 2x as fast as least. The wrestler boss was really cool but it's easy to beat without getting hit once, even on the first time. I doubt they will make this harder, so I won't wishlist, sadly.

I never look at finished pictures or try to use in progress pictures as clues anyway, but the presentation was still pretty bland. Bosses were too eay, lvl 3 puzzles were harder. Made it into endless on the first go - it needs work, but I wouldn't say it sucks
