this is only true for like the first 1-2 levels on a first playthrough
but as soon as you get the hang of the game, the levels stop being silly (why in gods name is the terrorist attack right besides the unatco base?), you get a laser sight or something so shooting isnt abysmal, it gets better and better. Up until Hong Kong which is an area so good that its qualities are practically unmatched 25 years after

This anon has it right, in my first playthrough right now, currently in Paris. I tried like a year ago and didn't get further than the first couple levels, once I passed that it clicked and I'm having a great time. Part of the reason I stopped was difficulty getting it to not look darker than Satan's asshole, I downloaded like 4 different fanmade renderers until I found something that didn't break the game

HR and MD aren't reboots. I like how those games look, far from soulless with the neo renaissance motif they went with but yes, they suffer greatly from too much of a contrast. The world of DE, despite being half a century away from when the game was made, feels like it just stagnated for those 50 years. The rich and mercs got the cool tech and progress, everyone else was left behind. This of course fits with the lore of Bob Page usurping the Illuminati and taking full control as well as the entire idea of transhumanism.

Weird how captures of Deus Ex are almost always way too dark, it does not really look like that. Seems to be a common issue with UE1-based games.
