why do some people continue playing(or even finish) a game that they do not enjoy?
self hatred?
i sometimes see someone say "i had to force myself to play it", do these types enjoy feeling miserable?
it makes no sense.

usually they're games that I was really hyped for, but don't deliver or meet expectations. some for me would be Cyberpunk, Starfield, Diablo 4, Borderlands 3 & 4. Spent so long waiting for the games that I felt I had to finish them.

fair enough.
don't you feel like you've wasted time after you finished it though?
i can't help but think the time would be better spend on games you know you would enjoy as opposed to forcing yourself to play something that doesn't bring much joy regardless of the hype

it's good for your executive function
>decide to do something
>follow through on it
it's bad to be a quitter

that explains why it doesn't speak to me since i am retired.
the only time i use executive function these days is during work outs, fishing and hiking.

I feel like I'm wasting time pretty much all the time so it doesn't feel like a huge difference to me. I usually finish the game and just think how much better it could have been.

people hate to admit they made a wrong decision so if they invested money or said i want to play x game they are usually incapable of just closing the game and moving on, sunk cost fallacy but to a retarded level

I feel like I can't have a proper opinion on certain games if I dont play a good amount of them

Do you enjoy your hobbies at all times anon?

If you want to be able to critique or analyze anything then there is no way around it. In fact reflectin on bad things/art is a good way to learn in general.

there are some games I ended up loving that I really didn't like when starting it at first.
then there are others that were just a bad all the way through, despite thinking there would be some redeeming quality by the end, whether it be personal interest or general public opinion.
a few games instantly come to mind.

Depends on to the degree I'm not enjoying it and how close I am to the ending. Sometimes I will drop games that I'm not enjoying and simply move on. Other times I'm interested to see where the game will end up, and I surprise myself by finding things I can still enjoy. It's like watching a bad movie, sometimes you want to see if it's bad in a way that ends up still being a fun watch, sometimes it's so boring that you might as well put on something else.

I guess to bring up a random anecdote, I forced myself to play through FF8 because a girl I knew lent it to me. She was so happy I took interest in Final Fantasy and wanted to see my reaction. Probably one of the best examples of something I truly wish I wasn't playing, but I wanted to be able to talk about it with her. But also a good lesson to myself. And I still found different things about the game interesting, such as the locations and music, as well as triple triad, even if I just stopped being invested in the story at one point.

I only did that when I was trying to play the entire Resident Evil series, I gave up at 6 after forcing my self to finish 5 and 4

as an enjoyer of bad movies i deeply understand the bad movie analogy.
the first enjoyable bad movie i watched was Master Demon from 1991 (if you enjoy kung fu movies i recommend giving it a watch) i went in not expecting low budget action but it grew on me pretty quickly.
your anecdote is hilariously similar to my friend's brother FF8 story.
he only played UEFA and didnt care for FF or rpgs until a girl he met was into FF8 and he dragged himself through it lol they're still together so he sometimes still plays it out of nostalgia

I've done this with games I wanted to play partially so I could say (to myself) that I've played them and partially because I wanted to see what all the hype was about. For example, I love Final Fantasy 7. I could play it every year and probably never grow tired of it. So I ended up playing all the other Final Fantasy games over the years to see if they were as good. Turns out, no, I ended up disliking the story or mechanics in most of them. They aren't terrible games though, so I ended up beating all of them over the course of my life so far (except some of the direct sequels like X-2, and haven't played 16 yet) but decided after finishing them that most of them weren't really worth the time and I probably wouldn't replay them. To me, they're just solid 5/10 games. Playable, probably fun or even great to some people, but just not my thing.

I did the same thing with the whole Dragon Quest series, along with a bunch of different CRPGs. I fancy myself an "RPG gamer" I guess, so I frequently end up playing these games in an effort to find one more game with that spark for me. It's extremely rare, but they do come along every now and then.

I feel like I'm just rambling here though. I'm just another consoomer.

Yeah I don't know either. Sunk cost fallacy? Maybe they enjoy some elements of the game and want to see it to the end? Sheer completionism brain worm?

Eh, but why would you want to analyze and critique something to such a degree? If you already played enough to know why you dislike the game then you already have an opinion on it and can articulate what your problems are with the game. It's not like you're attempting to write a review and as such need to experience the whole product in order to provide valid information for readers.

Sunk cost, mostly, but also out of curiosity. Just yesterday I sat down and finished a game I got back in 2013, and it was pretty awesome.

My post is missing a middle part. By curiosity, I meant that some games have parts you don't enjoy, but sometimes there can be a great game on the other end of a shitty segment.

I had to acquire a taste for turn-based games before I could enjoy them, now cRPGs and dungeon crawlers are among my favorite genres.
Suffering through games that I initially didn't like paid off in the end and I still give new games and genres a fair amount of time before deciding if I shoul drop or keep playing.
