This game is fucking awesome. Probably even better than CT.

Why did you all lie to me for so many years?
Anonymous No.723611287 [Report]
>CT:
Snappy pacing and does a good job of immersing the player in the story as it's happening.
>CC
Slow paced and nearly half the plot happens before the game even begins, with it being told to the player later via text dump instead of shown to them firsthand.

I'm convinced some of you fetishize unpopular games, you see them as "alternative" hidden gems and you idolize them. The same way posters on /tv/ become completely infatuated with ugly/mid actresses, like Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones.

Jrpgs are actually a complicated subject, despite being very popular, so it can be difficult to judge a game by somebody else's experience. I've always been a fan of Cross, even though my first playthrough was a bit confusing and disappointing in a couple ways.

CC is great as a tech demo of the PS1's hardware being pushed to the absolute limit. The problem is they didn't have a good story to tell and the characters have the depth of a funkopop. Magus got cucked out of his life's purpose and CT's happy ending is subverted in the most crass way imaginable.

Better video game OST?
What happened to you saying "this game is fucking awesome?"
Guess you concede it's not a good game and only the OST is good.
Yes Chrono Cross has a decent sountrack, and that soundtrack is completely ruined by the DOGSHIT game attached to it.
That said, Chrono Cross doesn't even have the best video game OST on PS1.
Chrono Cross doesn't even have the best PS1 JRPG OST (Tales of Phantasia or even FF7 mog the shit out of it)
Chrono Cross belongs in the bargain bin where I got tricked into paying 5 bucks for it in 2002 before throwing it in the trash.

This. Worst main battle theme in a jrpg. Most of the content consists of character recruitment where most of the characters don't have any development. Combat is glacial. Too many steps back from CT. Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden, and the Saga Frontier games are better large party roster jrpgs from the same period.

Nah, it has a very strong beginning. Arni is beautiful and charming, and there's so many secrets/optional stuff to find there right at the start that a lot of people probably don't even know about all of it. The NPCs have multiple lines of dialogue, you can literally pursue sidequests in the first minutes of being in Arni.

It stinks. It's got 50 playable characters with no personality on any of them, a retarded combat system with no depth and there are like 2 enemies in the entire game that could even conceivably kill you, and the story is insanely slow paced and nothing happens. 99% of the plot is just people telling you about things that happened off screen.

Hurricane is F tier dogshit and it's the song you hear by far the most in the game. The rest of the OST is largely good but hurricane alone disqualifies it from being anywhere near the #1 spot.

The plot is a clusterfuck(due to plans by Belthasar extending all the back to the Dinosaur ages that are pretty much "tell, but didn't show") that sends you off in two different directions depending on whether you want to save Kid or not and the game itself keeps giving you all sorts of characters that you barely even use because it tries to be like Suikoden but doesn't have the rows of characters the Suikoden games often use.

I wouldn't say it "ruined CT" in any way because you can just ignore Chrono Cross' existence.
I would say however that Chrono Cross added NOTHING beneficial to what could have been a great "Chrono" series of future games considering how brilliant CT was and how much there was to build off the lore of CT.
CC was so bad that it cut that potential future off dead in its tracks and it never recovered.

TL;DR: CC didn't "ruin" CT, but it just didn't help in any way.

Nah the premis is incredibly strong and the mystery stays strong throughout the first half while moving you through diverse and interesting scenarios and constantly raising the stakes. The game's delivery of side content also to be commended. Like the other anon says as soon as finish the introductory dream sequence you already get to do side content and it's content that gives you access to playable characters. It's at the midpoint where the story loses its steam, you start having to retread content and the game becomes obsessed with rewriting CT's ending substitute its own.

The Xbox version for Radical Dreamers actually has a game-breaking bug that was never fixed to this day, and I'd find that hilarious if it wasn't so fucking pathetic. You'd be better off probably emulating the original version and getting better performance.

I personally tested the "fix" for the bug and the game constantly crashed each time, and dozens of people have left poor reviews complaining about it. It's also disappointing because I was enjoying the game desu up until that point.

Giving Masato Kato full reign over the story was a gigantic mistake. In Trigger, he was counterbalanced by an entire team of actual legends. Both Cross and the Shevat segment of Xenogears have exactly the same style of meandering, esoteric, overwritten pseud writing that is completely insufferable.

I really hate the divide the internet created between Trigger and Cross fans. I borrowed CT on the SNES from a classmate in elementary school and bought CC on release in middle school. They are both great companion pieces and engaging individual games. I didn't realize "Trigger fans hate Cross" was the general consensus until the days of gaming forums but even back then it wasn't as exaggerated.

As far as I can remember only Robo and Lucca dies in Cross. The game makes sure to give you a tl;dr explanation that the ghost kids you see aren't actually the CC cast every time you see them, It's just some wacky metaphor for dead timelines or some shit.
