They had a marketplace for paid skins? How did they not just let the project go on? It would have just printed money indefinitely over years.
I thought they had no business plan with it before.

They (smartly) went all in with Fortnite once the success train came in. They were positioned to have a few million-dollar revenue streams (paragon, Fortnite STW, Unreal) but then the billion dollar elephant came in the room. Sometimes it just be like that. Crazy to think it's been less than 10 years.

In 2012 they were valued at $825m before the Tencent deal. Today they are valued at $32 billion. We are not talking the same strata, they evolved into a tech company/media platform. Fortnite is still successful, but it kinda is bleeding users in long term. Zoomers who grow up also grow out of Fortnite, and gen alpha kids pretty much only play Roblox.
It probably would help if Epic also had an alternative multiplayer shooter with a bit more gritty aesthetic that zoomers who feel like they have grown out of Fortnite could move into, Unreal GAAS could have filled that niche. That being said, it does feel like Timmy was counting on Fortnite audience being locked in forever.
