Ragnarok looked like shit so I didn't play it
God of Boi was fun and the story was interesting enough to keep me playing. The combat is lightyears ahead of the original games (trashy mashers) but still kinda jank.
Its biggest flaw is that it's a movie game so expect to spend a lot of time just watching instead of playing.

I just think they are boring games, I can't think of a single reason why I'd recommend them to anyone. The only thing I liked about it was the impact it showed when the gods fought each other like the tutorial in the first game, but that basically never happened so I can't even say it had good cinematics. 4's story was fine, it's main problem was gameplay felt limited. It gets very obvious after a while Kratos is bodying the same exact troll in the same exact way.
Ragnarok improved it's gameplay, mainly via enemy variety. Unfortunately it also shat out one of those walking simulator therapy session stories that was further reinforced by the DLC and made every single fucking cliffhanger from the first game underwhelming and cringe. Everyone who defended Odin yapping like a used car salesman because >muh trickster myths missed the point of why it fucking sucks, he's yapping like a mortal from the future instead of a god. Also I don't care what fucking kind of point they want to make about PTSD, I wanted to fight Thor the GIANT BUTCHER not the sad worthless piece of shit, and I wanted Freyja to hold onto that blood grudge. Oh yeah, it's also bullshit they gave Freyja the power to fight back (somehow?) even before she broke the curse in a rape analogy journey. Fuck Ragnarok.

I will give you a sincere answer as a fan of the og GoW 1/2/GoS (and partially GoW 3). The 2018 game is pretty good. You just have to turn most of the UI off and play on GMGoW and it becomes a very enjoyable action adventure. Kratos is still Kratos.

As for Ragnarok, it's a horrible sequel that shits on the entire franchise. I hate SMS for making it. The combat is fine, but the level design, moving through the world, story, characters, pacing, it's all shit. They managed to ruin the only remaining original character Sony had. It was the last straw for me. I unplugged my PS4, bought a PC and never looked back. I'm still mad, still seething. I will seethe about Ragnarok for eternity. Even more so than the anon who is seething about ME3 ending.

There was a time when I would have said I didn't like Kratos as a character because he's always angry but that was the fundamental driver of the franchise and who he was, lol.

The first game is pretty mid desu. Finally playing II improved my opinion on the franchise III's set pieces are still impressive to this day. The PSP games suck and aren't worth playing.

If you think about it, it's fucking comical that Kratos and Atreus just refused to move out of the forest, and Freyja kept trying to kill Kratos in the exact same spot for all that time, and kept fucking failing. Which implies Kratos kept beating her ass and kicking her down a ravine or something since she's clearly fighting to the death, then just going home. And she needed a fluke to get him at bladepoint.

They try REALLY hard to prop her up as the girlboss supreme of the game, and yet she never shows the same level of power she did in 4.

A month ago I replayed the OG trilogy+CoO, skipping Ascension and GoS. While the GoW1 was getting really repetitive, the combat is still miles better than the nuGoW. Kinda sad how the combat devolved into this abominable tank control garbage where I can't even jump.

I played God of War 2018 and had a decent time. There's some cool moments and scenery in there. I think I'm one of the roughly 5 people who didn't get mad about all the troll boss fights.

I wouldn't honestly say it was a type of game I felt was needed, though; like I didn't really need Kratos to "grow" as a character. They could have just kept making games where he's an aggro dickhead killing gods, maybe find excuse to go after other mythological pantheons, and I would have gladly played them.

Amazing how almost all of this is wrong. The highest dps is using grabs, not the same combo which let me guess is square+square+triangle which is btw actually lower dps than just square+triangle. There are no i-frames on rolls. And casting magic does give you a very brief i-frame window but it does cost mana which you actually need on the hardest difficulty for other things than a fucking 0.5 s i-frame. You can use the bow in GoW 2 to consistently produce i-frames on demand but it's actually hard to pull off consistently because the window is very tiny and the i-frame doesn't happen at the beginning of the animation. The only real use for this trick is on the barbarian king.

I don't know why you need to lie about playing the games on the hardest difficulty.

gow 18 is a boring movie game. There are like 3 bosses and 4 enemy types, I'd rather replay sekiro for the 5th time than touch it.
Ragnarok on the other hand is a lot better. Sure, Atreus sections suck, and the whole "what she did before we met is non of my business" is laughable, but they did put some good effort to fix gameplay. And story moved from boring "we must climb mountain and deal with baldur" to more epic and complex one. Tyr/odin reveal was cool, atmosphere of unavoidable ragnarok is great. I'd rate it 7.5/10.
Also ffs when are we getting better climbing mechancs in AAA? Climbing Asgard wall could be so cool, but it's another "hold forward to climb with 0 chance to fail", it was really disappointing.

Technicalities aside, it just intensely bothers me that after 4 straight games of explaining why Vergil's way of life is ass-backwards wrong and incorrect compared to Dante's the 5th game just turns around and gives him what he always wanted AND more. It just feels narratively dissonant that after SUFFERING DEFEAT AFTER DEFEAT, the asspull tree gives him enough of a powerboost to finally clear the Dante bar.

How do I say this? It is kind of like if Vegeta got to have a loving wife on Earth AND not have to acknowledge Goku was stronger than him during the Buu Saga.

The combat in both games is the same. The exploration however is utter dogshit in Ragnarok. Every combat area is very visible, you have to press X to climb every second to watch elaborate scripted animations, it's garbage. And the "puzzles" are even worse. Not even the extra enemy types can save it because moment to moment gameplay is horrible outside of straight combat. 2018 doesn't have this issue.

The original God of War spawned multiple clones because it was a trendsetter, it created its own style of action game. 2018 is another AAA Souls inspired game with light RPG mechanics and Destiny UI. I love the nugames. They're my top two favorite games of all time, no lie. I think what people hate about the franchise in general is they just make up what they think it is about and get mad at that idea in their head. Besides silly memes and complete dismissals of the nugames, I've seen so many people lie about them. Even people who say they played the games act like Ragnarok wasn't definitively better.

These nugames have been more successful than TLOU at this point. Kratos is the only character from that Xbox 360/PS3 era of "Serious Man Mascot" that's still popular without a game flopping. That's nice to see. Hopefully Santa Monica will read the room and keep social activists out of their games.

Enemy sliding is exactly the same. New weapon makes the game easy even on GMGoW. Enemy juggling works in 2018 exactly in the same way. Abilities were repurposed but even DLCs or expansions change more than Ragnarok did. Verticality is the one point I'll give you.

In 2018 you had a lot of time playing on your own outside of elaborate scripted animations. The locations looked like real places, you couldn't always tell if something was a combat area or not and the level design would bait you into assumptions. Puzzles were connected to the environment. Ragnarok throws it all out the window. You are either pressing a button to watch Kratos climb somewhere or fight. Everything is marked like a gym, here is a special construction for daggers on this random boulder, here for your spear. It makes no sense.

The puzzle quality has gone down too. Not that 2018 puzzles were challenging, but Ragnarok puzzles are "shoot these three arrows so their bubbles touch each other then explode" which is not fun mechanically, nor fitting the environment, nor challenging in the slightest. 2018 sometimes did incorporate puzzles into combat, like a platform with descending spikes, you could throw your axe to freeze the wheel or bump the spikes up, or let it fall down and bait enemies into the press before running away. Ragnarok is afraid to leave you alone with a puzzle for toddlers for 1 second. It's not surprising since they openly said that they based their Ragnarok puzzles on DSP playthrough of 2018.

In that game too the combat got noticeably worse after getting the blades, because now you had four abilities on cooldown, and unless you held back you could solve most fights by simply cooldown cycling and spamming your shit with little thought. At least while you only had the axe you were forced to engage with the mechanics more closely. Ragnarok starts with cooldown cycling and only adds to it. They didn't try to solve one of the bigger problems, they doubled down.

Exactly. It's even worse in Ragnarok because your abilities will always stun enemies in any situation. Even Gra or the King on GMGoW are stunned by all of your abilities all the time so you can literally just cycle between them and ignore a lot of the game's mechanics. Enemies in 2018 would build stagger immunity to your abilities so your ability cycling was also more dangerous. I think bringing the mana back would work more for Ragnarok. They also didn't solve the issue with health or gear levels. If you finished your fight on low health, you would get back to full if you died in the next fight anyway, so why not just heal between the fights or the better option, why not just remember your health and keep it even after you die?

Nope. Stun Moves were nerfed on the axe. You could use the first two moves you got for the whole game in 2018. I did, and it was a major reason why the Axe was way better than the Blades. Now all moves won't necessarily stun a boss unless it's already being stunlock, and now we know immediately when stunlocking can no longer work and super armor is activated.

So you turned off the indicators before you understood how the moves worked? No wonder you didn't like the combat. Sometimes you need to parry, sometimes you can just block, sometimes you HAVE to shield bash or you will take damage. The indicators matter because whatever shield you dictates which moves you can parry or block. Some shields can't parry at all, others can only parry. If you grab a shield with a focus on blocking, some "red" attack become "yellow" and can be blocked until your shield breaks. A parry shield might have to dodge more, but each parry is more rewarding.

And of course there's animations and moves that indicate when you need shield-bash, like a giant AoE for example from one of the superbosses. But without indicators, you're never gonna learn to watch out for those moves and when to prevent them. I get wanting a harder game, but you just autistically hate UI indicators and made the game worse for yourself. You just handicapped yourself for no reason other than autism.

Gameplay (what's there anyways) is 6/10 at best. The original suffers from Spamrunicattack-itis to do any sort of meaningful damage. The sequel dramatically nerfs everything that was powerful before. There's a weird tug of war between spectacle and gameplay, and this causes things in the gameplay to not function properly (a slight incline on a wall causes it to stop functioning like a wall for gameplay purposes). Then there's just egregious shit, like some enemies giving you a 5 second warning on a parry indicator, and others giving you a .1 second. Then there's the magnetism with every attack (enemy's or yours). There's also much fewer weapons than in the originals, and enemy design oscillates between passable and atrocious, and gameplay is artificially limited by your levels (while your stats do next to nothing).

I suppose there might be something more underneath the surface. Maybe someone sees something in the "I don't care if your mother fucked half the Norse pantheon before she met me because I'm a Better Man™" narrative, I know I don't. But I also don't replace my meals with Huel shakes, that I drink while proudly watching my wife get her holes filled by Haitians refugees, so what do I know. I never used runic attacks, because the gameplay consists of spamming them then running around waiting for cooldowns. I played exclusively with parry/regular attacks and rage. The only fun I ever had with the combat in the game was the Valkyries, where the arena and boss' moveset was designed with the game's gameplay in mind. The rest of the game's encounters range from atrocious to dull. Having undodgeable projectiles that look like ankle-level waves with perfect tracking that can be parried with the game is counterintuitive. I finished the game on GMGoW and beat every optional boss. Your abilities will always 100% stun enemies in every situation in Ragnarok. There is no hyperarmor/stagger resist mechanic for abilities, only other attacks. I haven't played the game on lower difficulties so I have no idea if it works differently there but it would be very weird if they made it easier for the hardest difficulty.

I hate when developers rely solely on them. A good action game is made without UI indicators and then they are added in for improved readability. Attacks in Ragnarok still have red/yellow circles around them with UI off to signal if you can block them or not which is a bandaid to a system that is lacking logic. In older games you could parry hits that were made by enemies of your size and you couldn't parry massive hits. The design spoke for itself. In Ragnarok you can fully block Gna's whirlwind but you can't block her sidestep even though both use wings and the whirlwind is a lot stronger. It's just watch the yellow and red markers bro with no consideration to actual enemy design. And I'm not even saying Gna is a bad boss, but the attack design doesn't fully match the expectations, physicality if you will.

First game was an interesting study of what a character like Kratos is like when they fulfill their revenge and grow older. My issue is that, for that to happen, the logic with which the entire world works by basically had to change entirely. The sort of world the first games happened in is simply not like the world the new games happen in. I really wish they'd introduce a character that is just like young Kratos and is pulling the sort of insane, ridiculous stunts that Kratos used to pull in his youth, just to highlight how much he has changed, but it really does feel like the world itself has changed alongside him

It should have been Atreus. He should have left in this game and truly become Loki. Enraged, he turns against the realm Kratos and Faye built. He grows closer to Odin, Thor, and even Heimdall, believing their vision more than his father’s.
When Ragnarok hits, everything falls apart. The realms are in chaos, exactly what Atreus never wanted. Trying to fix it, he wages war on his father, thinking he can rebuild the world his own way.
Now Kratos stands where Zeus once did, facing his own son. But unlike Zeus, he isn’t ruled by fear. He’s calm, brutal, and ready to do what must be done.
This could set up a great Atreus game. No forced humor, no Marvel-style dialogue. Just pure nuts to butts good ol' action.

I like the hearing dialogue, especially when I'm exploring. The only good parts of GTA or RDR2 were the dialogue between missions. Ragnarok's dialogue isn't consistently as good as 2018's, but they're both some of the best written games I've ever played. I like the characters and learning more about them or how they interact.

And why are these games more popular than the original trilogy? It has to be story, the balance is better in these new games, but the gameplay of the originals were more fun and exciting, so that leaves story, dialogue, and writing to the biggest selling point.

In 2018 enemies have hyperarmor if they get hit a lot even against runic attacks. You won't notice it on most enemies but Sigrun has enough health that it comes into play. I don't know if runic shield specifically exists in 2018 but the stagger works differently. In Ragnarok enemies will be stunned by abilities even if they have hyperarmor. The exception would be this runic shield mechanic, which happens at low health, so it doesn't matter.

I too loved how Kratos told Freya how he murdered his family while he was casually climbing mountains in between her quips. I also loved how they became good friends after one hour of detour, Freya was so strong she could just forget how she tried to kill Kratos for the past 10 years. Even better was the quest for fruit with Angrboda. I loved how they took almost two hours on this part to show how Atreus interacts with Angrboda while they pick fruits. And it was amazing how the twilight of the gods, the huge war, took less than an hour because it showed how time moves quickly when the world is burning. Truly incredible writing.

I had fun with it. The focus on the story is kind of funny because it sucked. The combat on hard was fun, but it felt like they tried to do Dark Souls combat and tried to spice it up, but then the "spicing up" became the entire combat, and at the end of the game you basically have to spec into the special ability damage and spam abilities to do anything which feels very samey. Very much feels like a too many cooks situation.

Criticisms of Ragnarok from someone who has it as their #1 Game of All Time:

Every bossfight needs to be at the level of the Stranger from 2018 or better. The NuGames occasionally get near the level of the old games, but never honestly compete with their awesomeness.

On harder difficulties, you feel more like a Dark Souls Protag than Kratos. I think if they added more on-shot enemies, and a combo meter that rewards you with more CC and AoE for regular combat, it would help a LOT.

They feel more like a Cool Down right now, give them a little more to do or double up on them so we have some variety and choice.

And that's about it off the top of my head, I'd like them to double down on RPG Mechanics and other shit as well, but that personal taste.

But here's why people lose their shit over one more than the other-
The British Empire colonized a quarter of the fucking world. Western powers extracted wealth, killed natives directly or indirectly, and left those regions as complete shitholes. The transatlantic slave trade brutalized millions. In America, slavery became segregation. The government ran drug experiments in Black neighborhoods, created the gang violence, then had the gall to criminalize the victims.
And it's not just history. People migrate to Western countries because that's where all the stolen wealth ended up. Then soulless corporations realized they could profit from all this. "Look, we made Angrboda black! We care about representation! Give us your money!" It's not genuine, it's seduction. They're using diversity as a marketing shield while seducing the minorities.
So when someone floats the idea of a white Black Panther, one of the few characters whose entire story is about a part of Africa that escaped colonization, people explode. Because for centuries everything got whitewashed. Moses, Jesus, Cleopatra, all of it. The exploitation never stopped, it just changed forms.
Both are wrong. But the reactions aren't equal because the history and the ongoing harm aren't equal either.
