Set the game to private, stupid. Right click it in the library.
It removes it from all the "friend bought X" things, doesn't say when you're playing it, doesn't affect other friends' recommendations, nothing. Hell, it removes it from the Steam Family share stuff too.

To right click it in the library, you'd have to already own it, in which case it would already have shown up in friend activity feed.
