Ueda games
I see people still talk about Ico and Shadow of the Colossus these days but nobody ever mentions The Last Guardian. Was it a bad video game? Does it not have any connections with his other 2 games?

Not at all, if anything it mogs Ico.
>Does it not have any connections with his other 2 games?
Like every other Ueda game there's a shared universe but no direct connection.

It's pretty good if you liked Ico.
I think people were let down that it was basically Ico 2 instead of SotC 2, and also all the hype building around it's long dev time inevitably led to disappointment.

SotCfags hate it because it's not a flashy action game.
Fake Icofags hate it because you don't get any gamer cred for pretending to like it.
Real Icofags are the only ones who like it and we're a dying breed

Anon you have to understand this game took 10 years to come out.
A lot of people were hyped but a ton more had already moved on.

the last guardian is unironically the best game ever made, but it simply asks something of the player that 99% of players are not capable of giving or willing to give nowadays. INCLUDING me when I first played it. and it's not just something like "patience". when last guardian released, I thought I understood ueda, but it I didn't. at the time it felt like a 6/10 to me. it wasn't until I replayed it again a couple years later with a different mindset that I started to understand it. and a couple of weeks ago I loaded it up again because I wanted to find inspiration for my own art in it and its sheer beauty caused a lump in my throat.
pretty much anything I say about what the game asks of the player will sound like I'm trying to handwave away a broken system or something, but truly you just gotta be willing and 100% buy into the idea that trico is a real animal. if you spam commands at him he'll get overwhelmed, if he doesn't see you when you give a command then he doesn't know what to do, basically you gotta see him as more than just an "AI companion for solving puzzles". there's a reason why you can pull out spears from him and clean his feathers of blood even though this has zero actual ramifications. but beyond that, you also have to be willing to sometimes just stop and observe him to truly get it. like, the last time I loaded up last guardian it was as I said in search of inspiration, but since I'm learning 3D modeling and drawing I was also going into the game again with an interest in just looking at everything in insane detail and just stand still and observe. that goes for trico too. like near the start of the game there's this part where he sets loose a bunch of trash sitting at the edge of a cliff, and he navigates it carefully. you typically run ahead in this situation as you have to lead him, so you might not even see how carefully he navigates that part of you're just looking to progress and play the game like "just a game".

also I just want to say how fucking much I hate it that I can't prevent my ps5 from trying to update the game (which locks into 30fps) unless I literally take it off the internet completely. even if I cancel the download of the update once, it'll just attempt to do it again and again, and worst of all, you have to completely reinstall the game if it succeeds in updating.

Button mashing commands will fuck up his AI and make him confused which consequently meant that 90% of gamers got filtered
Luckily they thought of that so if you scold him it resets the AI

Harsh, still I played through Ico like three times, SotC four times and The Last Guardian five or six times, I can't remember, I wanted to see how many times that choker pendant would change.
I really love The Last Guardian, there is some sort of nostalgia too it that not many games can re-produce.

It's possibly my favorite game of all time, or at the very least top ten. I rate it higher than SotC by a pretty large margin.
I used to take care of animals so I never saw Trico's stubbornness (or bad programming, if you're feeling cynical) that bad. It reminded me of working with animals, who rarely listen to you at first, but with patience, can be taught to work with you. And the ending was perfect. It's rare, especially these days, to find games so perfectly paced, with a solid beginning, middle, and end. I felt like TLA was solid throughout. Not that either Ico or SotC had that problem' Ueda games are good all around in that regard.

But yeah, as others have said, it's not perfect, and it has some pretty dumb performance issues. It still stuck with me MUCH more than any other game in the past ten or even twenty years.

It is a good game with a lot of flaws.
Runs poorly on the PS4, and has anti-soul giant controller prompts, which you can't turn off.
Not as pretty as ICO despite being on massively more powerful hardware and huge dev time.
Game feels like it had troubled development and just got ultimatum rushed out the door.
Still good just not as good as the first two.

I just thought the ending was cheap. I wouldn't recommend a movie about a kid and his dog companion if the ending is just the kid having to watch his dog get mauled by pitbulls. Like what the fuck were they thinking. You can fuck right off with your shock value ending.
Anonymous No.723635871 [Report] >>723637393
>>723632426

Agreed.

>is this true?
Mostly. I don't know if it was intentional or by accident, but they did manage to program Trico in such a way that he behaves really closely to a real animal. He's stubborn, he's easily distracted, he's not obligated to respond to you directly, and for anyone who has neither raised a kid nor properly trained an animal, these characteristics are incredibly frustrating. He's not designed like a video game creature, or a distinct mechanic at the player's complete control. But if you're willing to engage with Trico AS IF he's a real animal, his behavior, or lack thereof, makes much more sense. He gets better over time, as you build a bond with him, and this is represented both by his AI and the mechanics that open up. And if you give him time to "think" about what you want, and don't get too upset at his "mistakes", he becomes much more consistent.

I love Trico. Ending the game gave me the same feeling as saying goodbye to some of the animals I've worked with in real life. It was surreal to experience that kind of feeling with something I know is not real. Very few games have had that effect on me.

literally no other game will ever have ai as complex as trico. not even because it's hard to do, as it'll no doubt become easier in the future, but game designers simply don't care to do it or even know this a thing one could do because they lack the sensibilities for it

The opposite, one of the best ever made. All of the love it's getting in my thread fills my heart, for years nobody had a kind thing to say about this masterpiece, hopefully the tide is turning. It'll be a huge boon for the game once it's emulatable and the sony-mandated tutorial popups are modded out.
