Gen 5. It was during that development cycle they lost it. Gen 5 was still good, and up to 7 the soul was still flickering in the franchise. Everything past 7 is absolutely destitute of any SOVL.

Gen 6 or Gen 8.
BW2 was the most kino shit in history and it really felt like a last hurrah for the series.
Then XY came out and it was pure pokéslop. I remember the excuse fans had at the time was, they put all their resources into transitioning everything into 3D so they didn't have time to make an actual good game.
Then ORAS came out and it was.. ok. 7.8/10 on the kino scale.
Then eventually SWSH happened and it was pure garbage. It's like they didn't even try. And from that point on the Pokemon company realized that they could just ship out actual dog shit in a cartridge and pokemon fans would buy it no matter what.

It's just gotten worse with every iterations since gen 6. There were problems in Gens 1-5 as well, but at least they tried to do cool and innovative things. Gen 6 felt like they decided to just give up and start milking the cash cow instead of trying to make video games people wanted to play.

Pokemon could never make the jump to 3d. It's like Bomberman or Pacman. Shin Megami Tensei is everything Pokemon wish it could be.
