Has a "spiritual successor made by the developers of the original game" EVER worked out well? Ever? Can you name even one (1) example?

Postal 4 was certainly an improvement on Postal 3 if that counts?

Xenonauts is better than old XCOM by a fair margin and better than nu-COM by a mile. XCOM2 is it's own thing, pretty fun though.

Bioshock 1 was pretty good even though it is way more casual than System Shock 2

Yea that was my point, like someone else made Postal 3 and then the original developers made another sequel that was better.

Mordhau was a great spiritual successor to Chivalry 1 until it was ruined by autists and then they finally made Chivalry 2 making it fully dead.

This, but it still feels a bit sterile and soulless compared to DK

To answer OP's question: Dark Souls and Bayonetta.

What are Dark Souls and Bayonetta spiritual successor to? You're disqualifying games made by the original developers, so it's not Demon's Souls/King's Field, and DMC.

back 4 blood had terminal feature creep and shoddy work throughout, it's archetypal "ideas guy" game
>why have 4 good characters with polish when I could have 38 shitty ones?

l4d gameplay
>punch zombie back
>shoot zombie
>walk with team forward
>more zombies!
b4b gameplay
>use the gay ass knife on sponge wall zombie since I don't have the melee deck
>pull out blue gun since I finally found a blue in line with my build
>wander around level
>more crows
Back 4 Blood threw so much shit around, some of it stuck. I will admit that having alternate exits to even harder levels that act like challenge dungeons sometimes is really fun and can add a lot of variety. I'll play it but only if people are inviting me to.
The genre has to either progress or die I'll admit. The meta-progression outside of matches isn't necessary but it can add a lot. If B4B didn't have unlocks or cosmetics then it would be a total joke.
Me? I would throw out half or more of the systems in B4B, including all the cards. I would have tied character progression to gun purchases and upgrades. Payday 2's or Darktides weapon/progress systems would be the first ideas to copy. In my version you would pick a character with a model, sure unlockable outfits whatever, pick a class MAYBE like medic or mule or scout or a dedicated melee guy, and then you just have your weapons. In maps you could find health kits and
I don't understand why having two or 3 different types of ammo is basically forbidden in videogames. l4d2 had some token explosive/fire bullets but in my opinion you should have a magazine or two of those going into a mission, and be able to find more, or even share ammo.
A real l4d3 would only need l4d1's art style and loving attention to detail (legs are visible, sniper dots are actually centered) and some reconsidered balance with special infected health/spawn rates. Anything meta-progression would have to be more satisfying and less time-consuming or complex than B4B.

if you wanted to play l4d3 I would recommend darktide. At this point the game kind of works. Fatshark does tight gameplay, they do cash shops. But anything serious like actual campaigns and maps and good inventory systems or anything takes them years to clutz through and right now it's your favorite builds getting reset to mystery meat every time they rebalance their house of cards. They're not an independent studio though.

We tried B4B at the start of the year and while not being the (rosecolored glasses) unsurpassed experience of old it was definitely a fun and worthwhile game and far from the train wreck (((/v/))) constantly tries to paint it as. The deck/build mechanics were neat and allowed for some role delegation in the group. I'd say it's a recommended sales pick-up.

it has some Bethesda quality to it where if you play it clueless it's fun at first unlocking anything, but if you know all the systems you'll resent how they're put together.
