Vivec, Alma, Sotha murdered Nerevar. It was Nerevar and Dagoth vs three stooges. Guess what? They killed him, almost killed Voryn, took the tools and made themselves living gods (because all 5 of them were just regular mer/humans). The issue with Dagoth is that he died in the mountain, so close to the heart. So obviously even without tools Lorkhan's magic seeped into him, or magic seeped into his dying body and soul, and unlike three stooges, who needed to tap that heart from time to time to replenish their powers, Dagoth just steadily absorbed it. Then there came a point when he was strong enough and attaked them thus seizing Sunder and Keening. Three could not destroy Dagoth because all four of them are linked to the Heart of Lorkhan. Yet unlike the three whos powers deplete because to top-up, Dagoth doesnt even need them to grow in power. However, he needs the tools to fully tap and unlock the power of the Heart.
Technically, Three could destroy Dagoth in early days, but hubris prevented them. Why would they relinquish power that made them gods?

One thing is very clear - Voryn Dagoth would not betray Nerevar, and Nerevar would not betray his best friend. Also, Nerevar was VERY much against using Kagrenac's tools, most likely because Azura warned him that bad things will come of that (also because she was pissed at Dwemer for multiple reasons).

Also, please do note how Vivec fucks off to somewhere, Alma goes insane, and Sotha - well, Alma killed him. Goes to show how flawed they were.
