I am playing through Automata right at this moment and I like the story.
I also liked Divine Cybermancy story, that game is what put me onto these sort of narratives.

I did stop early in route A to go play through Nier Replicant and now being close to the end I think that was the correct choice because a bunch of things carry more weight with the context behind them, but that makes it a pretty hard sell to someone

Yoko Taro was a fat, autistic drunk. The games were built around the simplest game mechanics (Yoko barely knew the basics of game development) and the content was made up of a few funny and clever puns or puns along with the snot. It would hardly have become popular if Yoko Taro had not been constantly surrounded by a horde of competent developers to fix the ideas in a publishable condition. The booze was used up, but Taro's only way to deal with it was to make jokes about his excessive drinking because he simply could not admit that he had problems with his lifestyle. In the end, the only merit of this "Japan's greatest game developer" is probably how many ideas related to transhumanism he was able to write.

Maybe I am a sentimental person but I know that if I had finished Automata first and then played Replicant I would be beating myself up because so many little references give nice pay off when encountered in Automata.

The reason why I contemplate telling someone to play Automata first, besides probably being a more interesting hook than Replicant, is that by having a little bit of Automata under the belt
the Administrators revealed at the end feel much more impactful because they aesthetically bridge to Automata

In Drakengard they establish the theme of a deep bond between two beings, it is front and center in Drakengard and then it is never directly brought up in later titles, but it does seem to shine through with how Nier, Kaine and Emil have a companion bound to them and how the androids get their Tactical Support Units.

Automata is a sequel to a stageplay called YoRHa that came out in 2012 and has had a bunch of different stage versions since then (and a manga version). The game has an optional text story segment that goes over the abridged events of the play. I would say to watch "YoRHa 1.2" if you can but it's not easy to find and 99.9% of automata fans have never watched any of the plays or even know they exist.

Automata directly references the Machine God several times and you only find out it's Beepy from Automata if you read a JP only short story from the DOD3 guidebook. It's even worse for DOD3 because most of Accord's lore is in a limited time JP-only Sinoalice event and random interviews Taro's done
