This game isnt just mediocre or bad. It is literal garbage. Literally the most "standard" shallow, depthless, pointless, hollow game I have ever played. I feel like I have played this game a hundred times before on shitty online RPG sites in the late 2000s like a dozen fucking times. And I no longer have the tiny "entertained by anything that lets you ignore homework and feel like you're living out a heroic fantasy" in your head shit games with no actual substance to any of that fantasy. Nothing heroic you actually do. Nothing creative, Nothing thoughtful. Just follow the fucking marker. Press A in front of NPCs, then follow the marker again and spam X to hit things.

Kill yourselves for anyone of you ever convincing me there was anything worth in this game.

I want a DISSERTATION right now on why everything I said about the game is wrong, so that I can atleast have some hope that its just me. Not the game.

lots of mid 00s (or really any other 'old') shit was extremely basic and didn't stand the test of time at all
most stuff in general is bad, obvious to everyone who isn't a 13 year old
fable in particular could've been a decent foundation to a decent RPG series but Molyneux is something in between of a scammer and a hack and nuked the series to bits

Somebody DEAR GOD recommend me an actual good RPG before I go insane from how consistently garbage and shallow this genre is and give up for good. I just need ONE special one with quests that arent entirely dialogue boxes and walking from one point to another in the most tediously elaborate way possible, whether that involves a waste of time combat encounter that takes much longer than any combat encounter ever should, not because of the complexity, but because the game arbitrary limits or restricts the actions you can take because "thats what RPGs do" and not because "thats how combat is made complex" because OF COURSE THAT MAKES NO SENSE TO MAKE COMBAT MORE COMPLEX ON ITS FACE. Theres no necessary relationship to both facts.

This is actually a decent one, but id almost not even consider it an RPG, because of how engaging its dialogue is in making the entire point of the game to essentially understand your character, your enviroment, and what to do with your life/time. Its basically one of the few games where that whole Ludonarratove resonance meme is so perfectly in sync that you can insert yourself into the game naturally and perform actions and have interactions naturally that you have genuine natural interest in understanding, solving, and engaging with.

I dont know why, but its very rare games do this. Even something like Baldurs Gate which I tried to play last year. Its much more focused on the allure of "choice" rather than the dialogue actually being engaging or interesting. I forgot the exact example. But I remember this moment somewhat early in the game, where you have to move a bear from an elevator or something, and literally all of the choices except for the obvious bad choice accomplish the exact same thing

Another game that really does its "story drives the gameplay" thing well is Age of Decadence but that might be too janky for you. Its central hook is basically "well if you pick the merchant class then you won't try to go into seedy alleys and do combat encounters cause you'll just get shanked"

I replayed Fable TLS a while ago, it's still a fun and charming game. Though playing a pure wizard is a slog in TLS - the endgame enemies have too much health, and dragon Jack is a cancer with any "elemental" spell except Shock. Maybe Battle Charge would've worked well, but I didn't test it.
Turns out, russian localization added an insane amount of soul to the game - the original english voices don't work nearly as well.

How can movement be "floaty" in a game you cant even junp in? Its more like the movement is way to weirdly rigid. If you try to walk a bit before you start jogging youll notice your character sort of "slides" into the animation for a very brief moment. So he starts moving before even moving. Basically im pretty sure the walk cycle isnt actually real and just looks like youre walking.

yeah but why not just play something like cookie clicker at that point?

once youve played enough progression games, you realize youre in it more for the progression and less for the game, and that the best "games" are the ones that less your progression feel tedious enough to be invested, but not so tedious that you see no point from the get go.

ive wondered if the widespread obsessions with open worlds and rpgs is just a product of billions of shallow people reaping the benefits of the abundance of capitalism with no real substance to their character to produce something significant, creative, or thoughtful, so they waste the abundance of time and money they have on experiences without standard. Experiences that exist just to experience. To waste as much time as possible, gathering things, and testing out the outcome/consequence of interactions that even though lack the depth of real life, are sufficient because the mundanity and bore of a life without any values, without anything to really work for, other than work, so that you can continue living to work, allows for one to get the sense and feeling that they are experiencing more of a "life" than they actually are. This isnt about escapism. Its about simply having something to do, that you cant, because you wouldnt be doing anything meaningful or fulfilling anyway without the game. Just consuming something else.

RPGs and Open worlds, like binge watching before them. Its just a way to have "experiences" near endless, lengthy experiences that feel like they "progress" even though the tv show, and the game, is really designed to never reall change, to always be the same, constant, never really go anywhere, but give the impression it is or will, because its just about experiencing.

The worst thing about the first Fable is every single "choice" in the game is either "kill this person or don't kill this person" and if you choose to not kill the person you never see them in the game again anyways. The only difference is whether you get good by points or bad boy points.

the problem with fetch quests, is going to Area C, to compelete some simple repetetive menial task for someone in Area A, and chances are youll have to go through Area B to get to Area C, and even if you dont its a tedious waste of time nonetheless, all to return to Area A...like youre following a straight line.

No its not. Some games don't have you doing the exact same action an arbitrary number of times before you can complete a task and return to the quest giver. Sometimes you actually have to interact with the enviroment to change it. Or have to avoid a trap, obstacle, or navigate some complex area in a precise manner that tests your memory or reflexes, and sometimes, even rarer, you have to actually think about figuring out how to actually solve a problem without failure or consequence. I dont simply mean "choosing between the bright green choice vs the dark red choice thats obviously evil and wrong" I mean actually having to understand the situation and circumstance to accomplish the right thing.

(Is there a game like this anyway)

Atleast in theory. Youre actually right that most quests are like fable, and thats exactly why fable is so disappointing because I expected an actual adventure where you have to engage with a hostile/unwelcoming world and actually explore and find accomplish semi difficult things while smartly avoiding poor consequences. Instead it was some of the most shallow binary decisions ever aslong with "do X number of thing then return to Place A" or "bring X number of thing to Place A". Im sure there are SOME not "horrible" quests. But when enough, or too many are so simple and mindless, its not worth a few good ones.
