Dark Souls is unnerving and frustrating to go through for the first time, but offers those brief moments of feeling rewarded before going back to the mentality of "I wonder what absolute bullshit is coming next". No, the game starts getting really fun on your subsequent playthroughs, where you're already familiar with most of the game and the critical path, and you try to discover what remains, complete different builds, and experiment with different play styles. And it becomes really fun once you get good at it. Then after a while you have seen most of what the game has to offer, you get bored, you uninstall it, and you move on.
