Good question. I genuinely don't know if someone would still enjoy Bloodlines if they played it for the first time now. It's got pretty sharp writing, great voice acting and great atmosphere, plus a setting that does a lot of the heavy lifting. But the actual gameplay? Well, despite what people here tell you, it's nothing like Deus Ex for the most part.

Tremere are fun. You also get the best hangout.
Nossies are also cool if only because of the various reactions people have upon seeing your ugly, Masquerade-breaching mug.
Malkavians are wacky as fuck, but the issue with them is they are reading ahead in the script and will spoil the game for you.

If the concept of Malkavian sounds at all interesting to you, the best way to experience it is on a first run because of what >>723704132 incorrectly indentifies as spoilers.
Most players aren't well-read enough to actually catch the spoilers as they're happening.
The reason Malkavian is best as a first playthrough instead of a followup is because:
>lightbulb moment > clap when I saw le reference

Noferatu are better for repeat playthroughs since it's much smoother when you already know what you're doing.
Malks are in a unique situation that you can only ever experience once since you can do them for a first playthrough and get to muddle through the joys and the predictions of the madness network in real time or you could do it on another playthrough so you can better understand what is being communicated instead.
Tremere start off slow until you get enough points to upgrade blood magic a few times, then it's laughably ez. They also get a unique questline which is very comfy.
Brujah and gangrel are fighty bois, not a huge amount of unique stuff compared to the last 3 which is a running theme for the rest of the clans.
I do not remember a damn thing about the Ventrue.
Toreador are ok.

I played the game for the first time a couple months ago (went Brujah) and the masquerade system seems silly. The game makes such a big deal out of it (I assume it's a game over if you run out of masks) but there isn't even any opportunity to do violations. I think I got one violation from making Heather a ghoul and then about 10 redemptions from doing quests
The only way I could ever break the masquerade would be to go on killing sprees in the middle of town I guess

The problem is that the only genuinely good VTM story is Swansong. Bloodlines 1 and 2 both have idiot plots that revolve around every single character being a gullible moron. They try to orient themselves around a mystery that a toddler could solve. Swansong's "The British are coming" plotline has actual intrigue, actual stakes.
Anonymous No.723705441 [Report] >>723721740

To be fair, Bloodlines 1 is deliberately designed to be "baby's first VtM game" and as such it excels. It helps that the story doesn't take itself very seriously. It's exactly the kind of beer and pretzels plot that you'll come up with if you wish to introduce the newcomers into the setting.

I didn't cry, but I felt something. There's an almost anime-inspired quality to some of the storytelling. When you think about it, Fabien can protect Phyre from the sun for a few seconds because his soul shines brighter than the sun. I had this mod when I first played the game back around 2010 that made the female toreador look like VV - by the end of the game she wasn't quite Bloodrayne but with the leather armor, katana and bullpup with maxed out Celerity, Presence, and Auspex might as well have been.

I think it went down with planet vampire years ago and I lost the harddrive that had it and every time I see these threads I feel the urge to go around as not Bloodrayne and kill everything again. But I just can't.

Only incredibly strong, like 6th and lower generation vamps or particularly old ones actually hold onto anything after getting the death suck. Majority of vampires are just totally destroyed.

There is no correlation between generation and surviving in the head of your Diablerist. Ever since the originally optional rule was introduced in DSotBH and then became basically the norm, it's been about willpower.
It's just that the most well known examples in the narrative of the game are very low generation vampires that got a get out of jail free card (Mithras and Saulot).

VtM funnels a lot of varied sources (from folklore to Necroscope). Anne Rice certainly was a *huge* influence on V1 and cast a shadow on the game line, Toreador can attest to that, but also that idea of vampires as main characters crushed by the passing of time and the struggle for their humanity. But it wasn't the only influence, by far.

Having read the main trilogy, I think Interview and Lestat are just propaganda heavily biased in favor of each author. They're lying through their fangs on every page. Queen of the Damned shows them both in a more neutral light, and plays them both accurately. Louis is painfully boring, and Lestat is eccentric and foolish.

It has to be this way, because Lestat is so fucking 180'd on Lestat's character that it feels like Anne Rice was retconning him.

Gameplay is ass. Half of the game you play as Fabien, who got no powers and no gameplay to speak off, in a walking sim.

Even in the half of the game you actually got gameplay, the combat is very clunky, you can only use 4 powers with cooldown, there are only 4 boring copy pasted enemies, and it's as far as possible from being a cool power fantasy. Also the enemies levels with you so the combat keeps being a slog whatever you do.

Not only is this somewhat incorrect, it's not even the point anon was making. Vampires look as alluring as possible to seduce and manipulate others. It's a tool for them just like their strength, their speed, their powers and their immortality. Of course, the Nosferatu in particular are an exception to this, but even they have a bit of an obsession with beauty (as in they like to turn especially vain people as a twisted form of righteousness). The vampire in itself can't ever be separated from its sexual origins, otherwise it wouldn't be a vampire. It's like trying to tell a story about ghosts but the ghosts aren't dead.

There's a bit of a misunderstanding here. Vampires use their vitae to kickstart their "dead" organs again. They do produce (relatively) normal fluids during that time. Think about how many parts of their body simply wouldn't work otherwise, for example their eyeballs and their mouths.

Nosferatu was about vampirism in a different meaning: disease, plague, and social decay. They also didn't have the rights to Dracula, so they had to change things a lot. Murnau was also heavily into grotesque expressionism. Orlok is literally supposed to look like vermin.

I think the most interesting thing about it is how it's one of those rare cases where a narrator in a fictional setting is being dishonest, and the author isn't telling you. A good example of show, don't tell, and it was nice.
I think Louis's issue is that he had no frame of reference for anything, including (especially including) Lestat's behavior, because Lestat didn't want to explain shit to Louis about vampirism, or how to be one other than the very basic rules. This left Louis to become a pariah in vampire society (what little there was) because of his lack of knowledge about the rules. Then we found out the source of said society (which is even funnier). Lestat was just a weird gay man with (Oedipus) mommy issues. Armand was a weird gay kid with daddy issues. Louis was just a stick in the mud, but maybe a lolicon. Claudia was an interesting character. I wish I hadn't stopped at Queen, because I want to see how much more batshit insane this series gets as it went on.

It's not an asspull. Light stands in opposition to Orlok because light in german expressionism stands for order and goodness. Tropes have an origin. In the case of witches it's because tall pointy hats are reminiscent of Judenhüte, which were the hats that jews were forced to wear so you can recognize them. Over time, tall pointy hats in general became associated with frauds, strangers and eventually witchcraft. The broomsticks stem from old folk traditions and fertility rituals, and their mundane use as a common household tool made it look even more magical when it's used to fly.

The origins of stuff like this is often much more interesting than people might think.

Safia was trying to resurrect Gideon to put his soul into Phyre's body. The Gardener is a weird fucked up version of Gideon. By having Phyre diablerize him, Gideon would be back. That's the whole point of the ritual carvings all over the body. It's to trap a soul inside. But Campbell caught wind of the mysterious box (shades of LaCroix), and decided he needed to open it. Except he compells Fabien to open it. Fabien, who is not feeling very well, goes schizo and decides that what he should do is cut himself and bleed all over Phyre's face. Which causes Phyre to wake up, kill him, diablerize him, and then murder Campbell.

It's tough because Bloodlines 2 does have a much better story than the first game. If we're judging it based on the plot, on voice acting, on general writing quality, it's a lot better. If we're judging it on gameplay in isolation it's also a lot better. But it's not quite as cohesive. It feels thin. There are major sections of the game where you're practically speedrunning through these environments that were clearly originally intended for so much more. The church, for example, shows up in a single quest, yet it's so obviously meant for more.

I don't quite get that complaint. Terminator: Resistance had sidequests where they were all "go fetch a thing for me" quests and I assume everyone did those. It's possible the game suffers from Mafia 3-style sidequest overload where there's too many of them spread across the story, but I feel like a game where you play a superpowered vampire giving you a quest like "Go kill this target and try not to be spotted" is an opportunity for fun, not a chore. I guess I need to see how these sidequests actually play out to get a feel for if they're bad or not.

The game seems inspired by Mirror's Edge, so "please go deliver a package" is exactly the sort of quest that I'd enjoy. Dunno about graffiti, though.

What's interesting to me is that it feels like they took sidequests and made them main quests. For example, Tolly sends you to investigate Onda, Silky, and one of the other characters. This is a main story quest during a Fabien flashback. That's the sort of thing you'd expect to be an optional quest chain. It's like they shunted all the conventional sidequests into the critical path.

This, is the real killer for me:
> A cursory attempt to yank the story off the rails by picking every antisocial, confrontational dialogue option resulted in the plot following the exact same trajectory, with somewhat snippier interactions with the cast and a few new lines of incidental dialogue based on clan choice.

In the first game there are three solid reasons to work with the Camarilla regardless of you wanting to go Anarch/Sabbat/Autarcky:
1) LaCroix needs you to die without him directly holding the knife and will dominate you into going into seemingly safe but actually incredibly dangerous settings to do so
2) Damsel wants a man on the inside to have relevant and immediate high-level information about what the Cammies are plotting so the Anarchs can prepare and respond
3) Jack knows the Sabbat will want that sarcophagus, so the best way to keep tabs on it is to let LaCroix have it since he can’t open it without the key

Three reasonable answers for why youre stuck working for the Camarilla.

I might be a minority these days but: to me, the "it" of Mage is that it's a game about belief. It's a game about defining the beliefs of your character, taking them to the absurd if needed, and then living with the consequences.
Trouble right now is that people, regardless of their own beliefs, can't stand alterity anymore. Can't fathom trying to get into the mindset of someone perfectly different, especially when it contradicts them.
Add to that the - for lack of a better description - performative, market-based use of language that posits saying something is making it happen in some ways we're suffering from right now, and you have a recipe for disaster.
Can't have Mage be what it's supposed to be bout in current times. The game will be torn to pieces by all sides of the debate.

New Vegas is borderline identical to 3 in more ways than not even if you're not being especially reductive and is less like the first two games than 3 is in several areas, like its almost total absence of random encounters (with what few there are often being limited to the same handful of spots) and the effect this has on how you navigate the world. The idea that New Vegas is notably closer to the first two in ethos or quality than 3 is, to an extent where it would be worth it and 3 would simultaneously be "one of the worst sequels of all time," doesn't have much basis other than that enough people (many of whom probably haven't played any Fallout games at all) have parroted those sentiments before.

>>723710571
Van Buren was being ruthlessly shat on during development by the same kinds of people who hate Fallout 3 for comparable reasons to the point that you can still find (very old) forum posts of Josh Sawyer arguing with them online about its right to exist and justifying its design decisions veering in a different direction. Nobody who isn't content with the direction the franchise has gone in would've been appeased by it being released in 3's place, not least because the overwhelming majority of people with that stance wouldn't be aware of Fallout at all if not for 3 introducing them to it.
