it's still decent but it has slowly shifted from underrated to slightly overrated at this point

The driving kinda sucks but the melee combat is still great and the story will always be pure kino.

It's better than GTA in terms of gameplay but the story is absolute cringe, the writers for this game were clearly inspired by the most dogshit cop dramas like NCIS and Hawaii Five-O and it shows. The main villains of this game have barely any screentime and the plot twist at the end didn't make any sense, somehow the minor villains like Dogeyes were done a lot better.

hot take. usually it's believed it was inspired by 90s hong kong cop dramas. which one is it?

It could also be inspired by those, the art and setting certainly reflects that and there are John Woo tropes in it, I've not watched enough of those movies to really comment on this. The problem I have with it though is the awful dialogue and the fact that the cop characters in the game are wholly uninteresting, it reminded me of those TV cop dramas where twists seemed to come out of nowhere and dialogue was written solely to make these characters seem "realistic" or "gritty" when no one in real life talks like that.

Like there's a mission near the end of this game where you intercept a street racing triad guy and then not even 30 seconds later, your cop girlfriend is telling you that the guy's trial finished and he's gotten a lengthy sentence. Like that isn't how law works at all.

Is there a new game being announced today or something? I've seen at least 4 shill threads for this game in the past 12 hours.

Probably something to do with the movie. Square killed the series after Triad Wars.

I spent so much time in the fight clubs when I played this game as a teen. I know it's just an Arkham clone, but for some reason the fighting here feels tighter, more brutal. Maybe because it's "realistic"

we need more open world games set in hive cities like hong kong

It's more like Yakuza on steroids, you can drag enemies towards props to impale them on street cones and throw them into telephone boxes and stuff. There's a lot of fatal actions like that where you can throw enemies off rooftops or impale them on hooks (like in the slaughterhouse).
Arkham games don't have anything that's fatal (at least not intentionally) because Batman doesn't kill and all. Enemies can still be punched off rooftops and fall to their doom though, hilariously.
