You can play the original, but there is a sort of vanilla plus community type bug patch that is worth looking into. It's very "objectively" better than vanilla. I remember at least one place in the game you might get hard locked in vanilla, but a console command solves it.

I'd get the lowkey bug fix patch for first playthough, but dont get the "plus" version. I'd say part of the charm of playing VTMB today is to get a peek at the past so I wouldn't mod it too much on first playthrough. It's also not a bloated theme park ride, so keeping the experience short and sweet is probably for the best. If you return later look into bigger mods.

Unofficial Patch is mandatory. GOG comes with it, Steam doesn’t. Basic Patch is just bugfixes, do that if you want your playthrough as vanilla as possible. Plus Patch restores some cut content, do that if you want more stuff and don’t mind if it randomly turns unfinished.

nos is second best for the same matter, but not being able to walk around and talk to everybody freely might feel limiting for your first run. highly recommended tho if you like playing as a creep and constantly looking for alternate routes.
the other clans are pretty basic. tremere has some extra stuff going on for them, but that's pretty much it. don't fall for the charisma abilities crap, that shit will just make you skip quests and puzzles.

Just use the character creation wizard and play whichever clan it suggests.

So they don't think you need approval to Embrace, just be smart about it. And at least one line in the game hinted that your Sire was possibly an Anarch.

I like it, a good RPG, but its very flawed, you have to ignore a lot of its flaws to enjoy it.
You have to put up with super buggy game that can crash at any moment, some shallow side quests, weird animations, terrible combat, an ugly ui, some terrible story moments.

But it has its charm, it has good branches as a rpg, solid rpg mechanics, atmosphere is good, some level design is pretty good, some story moments are amazing, just a great game if you like things like new vegas and oblivion. but if you are not into bethesda rpgs i think you won't find much good stuff about it.

In a way this game is like tabletop bethesda game but with slightly better writing.

You need the unofficial patch otherwise the game is broken and buggy. The game is a 12/10 for the first half, and a soft 5/10 for the second half. Invest in some combat skills because you won't have the option to talk your way out in the 2nd half. I enjoyed the Oblivion Mage's Guild quests like the one where you had to dive down a well and retrieve a ring you can't get rid of that makes you too heavy to swim back up again.

The biggest problem with Skyrim was the level scaling and half your spells don't even work on even the most common enemies, so your only choice is to hold LMB with a damage spell until they die and you can't do fun stuff like make them fight eachother for you with frenzy unless they're lvl 1 rat enemies that die instantly from a stiff breeze anyway.

I can only imagine that starting VTMB1 then to go to 2 is going to end in such so much disappointment, it's probably worthy of caution. That's if your recognise VTMB for the flawed near masterpiece that it is. I mean the sewer level couldn't really be excused, and the combat is just something you try to make the most of, despite clearly being flawed. But it's practically everything else is what should draw you in. VTMB1 should be enjoyed for VTMB1's sake, rather than a stepping stone to The Chinese Room's game. There was a much better splat comparison image posted back when HtP episode 5 came out, but the general idea of it is that Mummies at their weakest should be about as strong as ancillae because of their abundant life energy, and mages diff everyone when they get to archmage levels or get to ascend. The thing is that psycho megalomaniac vampires are not going to get tired of making other things suffer so they're not going to stop having an active role in making shit worse in the world.
