Maybe one who is now on a different server and a different character, his old main will be one of the 5 other characters he bots in his multibox party.
Current FFXI is pretty grim.
>>723725540 (OP)
Well, you can expect a completely different game, which isn't necessarily a bad thing--it's much more approachable for the people looking to play solo while still requiring a party to do a lot of the endgame content
Your friends are probably all gone now, and there's a good chance your server got merged with another server
Speaking of which, your server is probably going to be a bit on the quieter side if it's not Asura or Bahamut, which can feel lonely, but it'll be nice if you just want to have a nostalgic adventure and revisit areas that may hold memories for you
I recommend looking for an NPC named "Linkshell Concierge" in the starting areas that will give you a list of recruiting Linkshells (these usually always have a "new players welcome" one)
Leveling is done mainly solo now with the use of Trusts, which are basically summonable NPCs that take the place of party members, you can collect different ones by doing quests or exchanging for them with login points
I'd say your first goal after getting familiar with the game again is to start the Rhapsodies of Vanadiel storyline (an expansion that ties all the stories together), as just starting it gives you some nice passive buffs
It's going to feel like an overwhelming experience, but just take it one step at a time and enjoy the ride
The game is still really beautiful in it's own way, even if it has changed

Expect the game to look the same but feel very different, it's much faster in all regards. While the slow paced savor it mentality of 2005 isn't there any more it's been replaced with a literal fuckton of content, there is so much to do, so many avenues to pursue, and so much character building that it will overwhelm you.
Despite the appearance people are still open to talking and helping you, the community isn't as large as it once was but that bit remains.

I believe both servers are currently closed off from allowing new characters/transfers because of their surge in recent popularity
This can actually be a benefit to you, as quieter servers benefit from less competition for NMs and possibly more relaxed pricing (and as a bonus you don't have to deal with the flood of mercenary bot shouts)
I'd say stick with your current server for the time being, see if you can find a friendly or helpful Linkshell via the Concierge
Only consider moving to Asura once it's open if you can't find a group of people to play with and you want to eventually dive into the endgame side of things

A pretty good time capsule with a lot more QoL than you remember like NPC parties(Trust summons), teleporters, and much more available information for stuff ingame than word of mouth and strategy guides. On the other hand, a great deal of the overworld will be dead player wise as well as most cities empty except the larger ones
If you're heading back to experience the story, you'll have a good time. For a real MMO feel, it'll probably leave you wanting until the very highest levels and endgame

If you're coming from 2005, it's going to be real rough--this applies to most jobs though, so don't feel bad
Generally, if you're not playing with a group of friends or Linkshell members who are willing to help take you through some endgame content to get gear, you're going to be stuck trying to do it solo or by shouting for help and doing it with random players (or by buying runs, but I don't know why you'd you do that)
If you're in less-than-ideal gear, especially as a tank, doing things with randoms who are expecting clean runs is going to be a rough time
As such, it's recommended that you level WHM if you're trying to get gear for your main job
WHM 's are always in high demand for content and don't require much in terms of gear to break into endgame, so it's a relatively easy way to get actual gear going

Weird story because it's extremely similar to my experience trying to play it back in 2004 and being unable to even get the opening movie to play, thinking my install had corrupted. And I was using a satellite internet connection, so it's not like i was quickly installing the game, I couldn't play it for months. I actually called support and they told me the same thing, i just didnt have the graphics card for it. I had no clue back then what that was or how to upgrade it. On a whim, i found a GeForce MX4000 at walmart, and thankfully that was a PCI card, which worked for my Dell, and I was finally able to play

I'd say that really depends on how far you made it into the game before and how much and what kind of gear you had
Like previously mentioned, leveling now-a-days is done with Trusts, and in the Rhapsodies zones, generally doesn't take THAT long to do--your roadblocks will be stopping to do your limit break quests
Starting fresh will give you a clean slate to work with which might help you ease back into the game a bit easier (and it's also nice if you're worried about forgetting the story side of things); but if you have some decent gear from before, like anything Relic related, or even some rare NM drops which may still see use nowadays, I'd advise sticking with your current character

But yeah, you don't have too much progress (which is wild to hear because that was weeks if not months of grinding back then) and most likely nothing worth losing aside from having to unlock Paladin again
It's up to you to decide what you want to do, but restarting would probably give you a much easier time refamiliarizing yourself and getting back into things

The nice thing about FFXI today is you can level up from 1-99 solo using the trust system, and after that there's still partying with other players for capacity points.

XIV trannies especially will seethe pretty hard when they see opinions that are "good" about XI because they're all still stuck in their first MMO honeymoon phase and feel threatened by anyone playing anything other than their game.

True, but this is because the other stuff is "add-ons". They literally decided that an expansion means new jobs and new jobs means expansion after people felt weird about the gameplay content of Chains. Voracious Resurgence is only 2 years old.

No other game has had as much influence on my life than FFXI.
My dad bought it for me in Times Square toys r us when we went on a trip to NYC (I lived in PA about an hour away). I miss the era in which I could just walk into a video game store and look around and see something that was cool that I wanted and could just buy it based on that alone. I was so impressed by the massive box it came in, it came with the HDD and internet adapter thing so you could play it online.
The only FF game I played before XI was X, I was a Nintendo kid growing up so I didn't get exposed to the other FF games.
But that game truly changed me for the worse honestly. It became an addiction, it was like crack. It's all I wanted to do, play FFXI. I didn't have friends and the few I could have had I alienated, my entire social life was on FFXI, that's where my real friends were, the people I didn't even know who I played with every day. My grades in high school started cratering, I didn't give a shit I just played FFXI. My dad was too busy working his job all day and my mom didn't pay enough attention to care, so FFXI was my life.
I have such a deep nostalgia for it to this day, and many regrets. Eventually I was so addicted to the game I decided enough was enough and I /shout in Jeuno, gave away everything I could on my character and logged off without so much as saying bye to my friends, though by that point some of them had already quit the game too.
I still regret that, used to keep me up at night sometimes because in the years after I lost the notepad where I wrote down all the information for my login, character id, password, the credit card addresses and whatnot so I wouldn't be able to recover my character even if I wanted to. Years later I always wanted to just log on again and see what happened to my friends and if they still played, though I could see their names on FFXIAH years later and most of them stopped playing around the same time I did.

I always remember how they handled farming Moogle EX for 1.18 or whatever it was at the time as having interesting ideas and no way to implement them well. You had to get past a bunch of level 90 treants who aggro to sound, which means you just toggle \ and go into walk mode, easy. Except the servers were both shit and in Japan so if you weren't on that fucking island you would sometimes get a lag spike and your character would stop, register where your client was when it recovers, and then run to get to that spot. So the first week of Moogle was a conga line of endgame prog people and every so often one or two dudes would get a lag spike and instantly die and need a raise. So many times you'd have to sit on boss portal for weakness to recover because so many people died to a slightly laggy night.

It's weird how much I hate 14 now. I loved it for a long time, warts and all. I started during 1.0 because I was young and retarded and thought that it being really demanding on your system somehow made it a better game so when I saw a bunch of poorfags get filtered and get mad I wanted it. I feel like each expansion was 2 steps forward and two steps back for a long time, until Shadowbringers was only 1 step forward but still 2 steps back and since then it hasn't taken one step forward at all. I went from enthusiastically throwing thousands of hours of my life at that game to now actively looking down on anyone who has anything nice to say about it. 11 changed a lot over the years too, and it was always awkward which is how we have so many different fast travel systems mushed together when the game was disgned without one in the first place, but it still feels classic. The shift into the item level era was huge and made large chunks of the game as you work your way to that point really odd to play through, but none of these changes ever felt like a real betrayal. They were misguided, but they tried.
is this game easy to understand? i want to try an mmo but i dont want to get bullied :( last time i tried one i got ignored and everybody was already in groups it was so awkward in ffxviv

If you want to play the stories and suck shit until you figure it out then you could, they give you strong NPCs to fight for you. But you will absolutely not be doing endgame.

July of this year. Even with the game up right now in popularity due to the FFXIV raids, the boost is only temporary and SE knows this.
they've made it clear over the last 10 years they don't want this game to be gone forever. They had the FFXI R mobile game but that development fell through in 2021.
If I had to guess, they have something planned and would maybe reveal it for the 25th anniversary in 2027.

The story goes that it was supposed to get a mobile game for the 20th anniversary, one that was teased years in advance, but that was cancelled so it got nothing.

It was nexon though so it was never going to be actually good. If nothing else they farmed out the FFVII remake to cyberconnect at first until they ended that contract and did it in house, maybe the same will happen with XI. Clearly there's at least some level of interest to do so, but only at a mobile level is rough.

>However, as the title’s 20th anniversary approached, the dev team received “a lot of support” from players requesting for FFXI to be continued in the long term. Above all, Fujito emphasizes, players were still logging in and playing the MMORPG. “We thought, if The Voracious Resurgence wrapped up and FFXI clearly started losing its momentum, then maybe we really should prepare to end it. But that didn’t happen. I took this as a sign that we should keep running the game.”
It's not officially in maintenance mode according to SE, as it still receives monthly updates and just had a mid-size update earlier this year implementing race changes, content revamping, and entirely new server infrastructure. After the FFXIV raid finishes, if the numbers start to drop off quick, is probably when they'll stop updating the game.

It's just crazy to me how they had to have had some idea how a mobile XI MMO could work with their attempt with FFXI:Grandmasters
We never saw it globally, but it was an instance based open field game where you could engage mobs out in the fields (including rare NM spawns), which would start a more classic final fantasy fight against the mob that either your party members or other random players could join to fight and get experience/drops
The downside was the game was incredibly predatory with jobs and spells/skills being tired to armor and weapons (which is where the gacha element came into play)
Still, as a concept it was neat

1000% wrong. 95% of those players absolutely would pay a sub fee. Old school MMORPGs attract a special kind of autism. You don't just play that type of game because it's free on private servers, that's not how that works.
In addition, anyone that's actually played FFXI private servers knows that even today, they are still missing 80% of content from Retail, and the content that is available is incredibly inaccurate.
SE supposedly hasn't kept snapshots of that era of the game, but the modern game is still based on those snapshots, and they could easily recreate it if they wanted, it's just clearly not determined to be profitable for them. Otherwise, they'd have done it.

They play it for free on private servers because they are egotistical, this anon brought it up
>>723766514 but it's less about enjoying XI and more about Ego for this crowd of people. Sure, you have the timmies and tommies that just want to try it out but the main players, the people who stick around for years at a time, are a special breed of autist. They want to esportsify the game, they want to min max it, they want to control it to stoke the fires of their ego. They aren't going to randomly help you finish your genkai or guide you through yuhtunga for fun, they want to rush to endgame, cheat for gil, and control everything.
This breed of person does not want to play retail. It's not localized within XI either, you see this with the WoW private server playerbase as well. The difference there is that WoW classic is popular because it's a themepark whereas FFXI "classic"is the fucking oregon trail. A proper 75 cap official server would fail because there simply would not be enough players to fulfill the requirements needed for the systems to work.

With PUP I never got into the real autistic nitty gritty but I remember people who probably would have been serial killers if not for this game put up obscenely long articles on like allakhazam and killingifrit about how you can subtly control the puppet just by adding in a single several tens of million gil attachment and using a 60% chance water maneuver every 45 seconds or some shit.
>>723771936
I'd also recommend not to start the game with a magic class since soloing with magic at low levels isn't the best way to start the game

-Thief
These 3 classes are more beginner friendly and Thief has the added bonus of increasing item drop chances.

BLM is the fastest starter job to get you from 1 to 60 and Shadow Lord cleared, followed by RDM. BLM has little utility in post-99 content, so if you go that way, you’ll want to stop it at 50 to use as a Warp sub. RDM will pretty much carry you through the entire game, if you’re willing to sit down and learn how your buffs and debuffs work.

So two things it's actually far less lazy now simply because the jank way you have to get your other two songs for.
I'll try to make it simple but you have to use macros to snapshot that you can have 4 songs up instead of the two limit, this gives them shit potency and shit duration. You then have to recast them all in your real gear. So if you just have a melee party and don't have to do mage songs or other conditional songs for one person you're spending about a 3rd of your time singing. If you have to get mages about 1/2. It can also be tough to know what durations on songs you got on different people and if any one of them ever fully drop the song you have to do this no pun intended song and dance all over again.
Also until about 6 months ago I'd never tell someone to start bard. This is because you essentially required two ultimate weapons that require weeks at a time of work and several 100m of gil to obtain both. And people tend not to invite brd if they don't have these two.
However Square enix gave out this May a bonanza weapon kupon that allows even a level 1 to get the cchoice of a special weapon (it isn't an ultimate weapon but they are all unique, though some are uniquely bad). One is called miracle cheer and it allows relatively high song potency (a gjalla/luna will beat it) and it sets all song durations to 15minutes which is longer than any duration gear you can get in the game by a wide margain.
People been using that horn everywhere for near characters or dual boxes.

Huge pain in the ass to get BRD up to par though unless you lucked into
>>723781947 a few months ago, the others are much easier to get running and rewarding a long the way while brd is more like a long grind to get a huge increase in your utility
>>723781295
It annoys me to no end that BRD's song mechanic never got nerfed ever since the introduction of the Emp which allows additional songs. And the whole resinging exploit which allows you to resing your entire 4 songs but now with the other Relic equipped, so they're all fully boosted.
Meanwhile COR is still stuck playing RNG with only two rolls with a cooldown inbetween them, unless you get an XI.

Honestly the awful part is that its such a core part of the job now to have those 4 songs, along with 1, now 2 specific songs(that are also their own grind to get) though you can get 3 songs very easily and still perform well enough for basic content. A long with the annoyance of just having to do the stupid dummy rotation, and praying people stay where they need to/dont die as that fucks the entire thing up
I'm just fine only having to worry about 2 rolls, sometimes 3 but that's usually a hit to DPS to rotate in and CORs become a pretty solid DD over the yrs Even if its largely just cause of savage blade being busted

From what I remember as a Bard in the days when I played was as long as you hasted the party and blinded/slowed the enemy with your songs then everyone wanted you on the team, very short party wait time and you'd enter a area alone and people would message you to join.
Even better was joining invasions from the DLC and standing in a corner singing and getting max participation/points/exp for doing nothing, you could go /BRD and level any class for free.
>>723782331
There's a reason you bring both and it kind of gets into how degenerate of a design it is. BRD is additive buffs typically (aka raw ratings) while COR is multiplicative (raw %age). This isn't without exceptions on both sides but this is why they create a feedback loop that gets degenerate quick.
It's also why typically if you can only bring one and don't need cor's personal damage it's typically BRD just simply because at low buffs additive is better.
