I played too much of the SM + LttP randomizer and now playing the games on their own is too boring.

Genuine question, but what exactly was the technical breakthrough that enabled the creation of so many randomizers for so many games?

I was amazed when the first Resident Evil Remake randomizer came out, and I never would have guessed that it would have proliferated so quickly. The ability to modify console games to such a degree was something I thought would be far more difficult?

I wanted to but I couldn't get it working when I tried, I think. It's been a while.
It sounded neat though.
I don't know where people get roms these days either.

Works really well with Zelda formula and people just applied it to other games that are built in similar fashion.
If I'm not mistaken some platformers get randomizers for speedrunning matches.

As a kid, I sometimes would just collect the weapon from dungeons and finish another one if possible and go back to finish them afterwards

couldn't you have picked a less zesty character?

Probably related to streamers. Streamers can commission them or one of the fans of streamers will make them to get their attention, as randomizer is the bread and butter of streamers that give them thousands of hours from the same game.
Why anyone watches a streamer play the same randomizer day after day is something I can't answer, though.

Half of it is open source becoming more normal, inspiring more people to take on similar projects of their own. You probably take game mods being open source and having multiple active developers for granted, but this was not at all the case 10+ years ago.
The other half is the trend of decomps and people developing better strategies for decompilation and better understanding of the hardware/software.

i tried it a couple of times, and i'm very mixed toward it.
first time, i tried with the default preset and it had me stuck fumbling through dark rooms to find a vital item because the fire rod was available. took me an hour or two to concede and look up the dark room maps to get anywhere.
second time i tried super quick and was able to beat ganon after only beating two dungeons.
third time i played the beginner preset and things went just fine, until i came to the swamp palace and somehow used up all available keys and became unable to progress because i didn't open the right door. checked the spoilers and sure enough there were no more keys to grab, and the boss key was sitting inside of the big chest.
i still had some fun with it, but i'm afraid it will become a "comfort" game. also i'm not interested in joining the community.

I like the structured progression of zelda games. Randos are fun like once or twice but it's pretty easy to lose interest. They should just make a lttp master quest or something instead.
