We don't have problem with black protagonists just like we don't have a problem with female protagonists. The sticking point, as always, is politics. Nobody hates Samus Aran or Lara Croft, they hate female protags like the lead of Ghosts of Yotei. That's literally what happened, one of the top DC guys during its reboot back in 2011 was a huge Hal Jordan fanboy but he knew the Justice League was gonna get diversity either by choice or forced by the others on top so he pushed for Cyborg on the team because he was their most recognizable black hero, so that that the Green Lantern of the team could be free to be Hal instead of John Stewart

Nah, some are popular. It's just most of them are the same fucking character repeated over and over. The post modern, new yorker, chill black guy that is synonymous with the afro samurai who has to remind himself every day that dead people he never met were enslaved by the Yakubian scurge.
You'll notice that the most relatable and liked black protagonists are actually based on modern grounded people, and the exceptions, like Blade, have nothing to do with the same repeated slave rigmarole.
That character is the same as the asian dexterity build who has to live up to his society's expectations, or the white woman who has to break free from society's patriarchal expectations.

Static Shock and Cyborg are perfect examples of decent black characters. These types of characters can't be made any more because creators no longer see then as equal, but a "protected class".
