Does anyone genuinely find NGB hard or is it just a meme? I'm normally terrible at action games but I can easily beat it on master ninja. Do you guys refuse to use major game mechanics like UTs and ninpo? Are you guys doing self-imposed challenge runs like not upgrading your weapons? I don't get it.

It was really challenging on Very Hard at first, then it got a bit easier as I got to Tairon.
Then Master Ninja was not a particularly big difficulty jump, outside of when I locked into the save statue at Alma with no health items and only just barely around 90% health. That was crazy difficult, but that was only because my own stubborness because I realized I had to complete the library challenge before Alma, so I spent my hp items there and had to complete it well enough to enter Alma with a near full healthbar.
But the rest of it? Yeah it's not THAT difficult when you understand how to play it.
I got burned out when I reached Awakened Alma because I had played normal, hard, very hard and master ninja in succession pretty religiously.
Took a break for half a year, came back to it and beat Awakened Alma first try.
Once you know the systems, which you do intimately when you've reached Master Ninja, then it's not overly challenging. Same for 2 where it's mostly those first couple chapters where you have low health. Same for all the games really.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to appreciate Ninja Gaiden. The gameplay is so complex, you’d need a firm understanding of quantum physics just to parse the hitboxes. The hitboxes operate on a subatomic level and the enemy AI patterns are essentially chaotic systems governed by strange attractors. Why do people preffer Black over Sigma? I've played through black multiple times. I've yet to finish it all the way through on MN. Sigma I've played less of. Somehow, Sigma feels a tad bit easier but I'm not sure. It feels like hurtboxes are larger or something but I don't really know. There are some differences I'm not a fan of but it's mostly prefference, like the general look of Black, I preffer, some stages I think look better in NGB.

I'm just curious as to why people see NGB as the definitive version, or even regard Sigma 1 as akin to Sigma 2 (a game for which the reason for hate is far more obvious).

It's still NG, combat is gonna be excellent, I didn't pick up NG and played it for a decade+ because it features Ryu Hayabusa from the DOA series, I first played NG because it looked like a good 3D action game and as long as they deliver that again the game is gonna be great to me. They finally added realtime weapon change, they finally made good boss fights, they finally added a kickass ost, this is the sequel I always wanted. I just hope the UTs aren't op and the game isn't jank overall, NG2 to this day still looks and feel like almost no other games and from the footage it looks like 4 is a bit of a step down in animation quality.

I think the delimb and general enemy balance in NG2B really lets it down but you could charitably say thats up to preference.
My real issue with it was there is something up with input buffering in that game. I thought it was a skill issue since I played NG2B as my first NG2, but after finishing it on the baseline difficulty and getting about halfway through mentor I played NG2 on xenia for the first time so I could play it with the intended enemy balance and I didn't have the input buffering issues at all.

There's a clear evolution from NG1->NG2->NG3 (not evolution meaning better, but each one started from the one before it and tweaked things). Oh wow, Platinum actually added REAL Dodge Offset to this game. Not the free version they add to every game they make that just lets you keep your combo for free, you need to hold the button while dodging in this one too, and it has practical purposes in this game too beyond being there just because. You can stop weapon switching from resetting your string by switching during the dodge offset, not to mention that NG already is a game where you want specific strings for a reason, like wicked weaves in Bayo, so it makes sense.
It was a concern of mine at first, "they're just gonna add dodge offset for no reason, aren't they?" but they did, it wasn't the half assed version, and it actually seems to fit. I'm positively surprised.

The first chapter of Sigma is harder, in terms of encounters. But on the other hand twin swords are busted, as is real time healing which severly impacts boss difficulty as you couldn't heal when grabbed in black. and shooting bow while jumping, so all in all sigma is easier.

Black and Sigma1 are so close that definitive is a big word. Mediocre puzzles or mediocre rachel chapters, take your pick.

I personally prefer black because of small autistic things like Ryu having transparent models when doing a lot of attacks, and having a visible combo counter that isn't part of the karma window.
