Is input reading ever good design?

well, kinda, its the only way for enemies to know what you're doing. but there needs to be a delay to account for realistic reaction times. usually thats just a flat number, but you could incorporate various factors like distance, anything obscuring line of sight, orientation etc. to make it even more realistic. most devs dont which is why it can feel cheaty

It makes an already basic bitch combat system even more basic because now in additional to the general uselessness of most attacks, now you have to add in how easy it is for an input reading AI to counter.

"input reading" is a fake complaint for people to dumb to stop doing shit they get punished for

I feel like it can actually be good and add to a fight, making it feel more dynamic, but Elden Ring doesn't do it very well, which ends up doing the opposite and making the game feel much more repetitive and "gamey"

I mean yeah? A lot of fights in a lot of games don't function if the AI doesn't know what you're doing.
What you posted is doing it in a way that's utterly retarded though, don't get me wrong. That's not the fault of the concept at all though.

For years people acknowledged that fighting games using input reading for the enemy AI was cheap and lazy design. I swear if FROM could somehow have rubberbanding in their games their retarded fans would defend it too.

input reading is a shorthand for input reading with zero delay
obviously all games with enemies use input reading, but they use good design to make it not feel like input reading. games that dont do this are bad

Most of the time you're locking on to enemies before attacking them. Blind firing with spells rarely happens outside of boss fights and ADS with a bow only happens for surprise attacks. There is no difference between instant input reading and normal input reading in Souls.

Yeah there is, one is instant the other is not dumbass

There is no difference in how it looks like retard, if you lock on to an enemy and shoot your bow it doesn't matter how fast the input is read, the enemy will dodge the same way.

How does the gameplay change?
