He would actually argue and discuss with the group instead of leading then on like Verso does, and even when he was unsure about what to do next he would just say whatever was the most logical step to take.
He would also share trivia about older expeditions and be the butt of the jokes sometimes and take it like a good sport.
Verso couldn't do most of it because he already knew every answer and he was instead always trying to deflect and avoid subjects. He didn't care much about the other expeditioneers either and any fact he did know from the past, he would keep it to himself unless it was something that wouldn't reveal anything about himself or his family or the nature of the world.
Basically the journey was a lot more light hearted while Gustave was leading the group, and it turned very somber when Verso took over, even though right at the start of the expedition almost everyone dies right away and Gustave almost kills himself, they pick themselves up and are looking a very lively group by the end of part 1.
