how can you include people who only play mobile games and just play f2p stuff when you are trying to make a buy to play PC game. these people don't even have PC, they are not apart of your target market, you need to look at people in your market and their trends, the size of the market is important as well and including people who are not actually in your market just inflates the size of it and you get incorrect data.

what is the definition of "new videogame". is the report saying "new" as in new to the player (as opposed to something like a subscription fee or DLC or other microtransaction bullshit) or "new" as in was recently released? if the latter, how recent constitutes as "new"? i have spent around 400 dollars on games this year, and only captain blood released this year. of the releases from this year that interest me, none are worth spending the asking price when i already have a backlog and can wait for sales to buy games for 5-10 dollars each. i want to play ninja gaiden 4 but i will wait for a sale. i want to play MGS delta, but i will wait for a sale. it just is not worth it to pay full price to try to not get FOMO. last year i bought slitterhead and DD2 on launch. before that i hadn't bought a title on launch since NEO TWEWY. i almost bought death stranding 2 this year, but i didn't want to cough up the dosh for a ps5.

The digital videogame ecosystem the console manufacturers wanted last gen to trap players on their consoles is fully matured and everyone has large enough libraries to buy games on their own schedules. We're not trading old games in to buy new titles and we're buying so fast on sales we've got games we own but never even touched. On top of the lack of a need to get anything at launch, games are so shit the desire is weak. People buy multiplayer games at launch so they get the community, that's it.

yes and no actually, yes for the entire product lifetime, no in regard of an entire year (knowing that some games can stay 2 to 3 years without a single price down on some marketplace)
If you wanted to buy Dark Souls 3 right now on steam (no cdkey, actual steam), you would need to pay 60€, unless you are lucky to wait for the 30€ price drop "sales".

yes, which is the big problem with those "sales", they literally replaced the actual "price down" that you were getting back then, aka, the game get cheaper and cheaper over time.
Now, the game keep the same price the whole life, and you need to "rush" on those sales if you want to buy it at a "lower" price, which is stupid, because now that said game is in competition with other games on "sales" and games that just get released.

even sales are lackluster these days. look at MGSV. at launch? 60 bucks. it took less than a year for it to go to 40 bucks. then, in april 2017 it hit 20 bucks. in two years it went down in price by 66% with sales happening to it every couple months. it frequently went on sale since then, hitting 5 dollars often. now? hasn't had a sale since 2021 and remained at 20 bucks. this is pretty standard across publishers, lots of them have just stopped trying to sell their catalogues.

I make 130k/year and tbqh I'm in the "less than once a year" category, I mostly just play older games, because they're better. Game quality peaked around 1998-2008, that was the golden age and it's been downhill since then. I will, VERY rarely, like maybe once every few years, buy a new game if I see something that catches my interest and looks like it'll be good.

If a new game is not something like Silksong, right into the backlog it goes, I will buy it after it fixed, optimised and balanced for half price two years later. Especially if it is an AAA-wannabe, because these tend to be the most broken and mid shit at the start and MAYBE good later.
No, really, gaming is my main hobby, and I have money for games, but it is just the most efficient way to approach it after many tries and errors. In 9 times of 10 hype and fear of missing out are nothing, marketer-kun can suck it.

It doesn't take long for a new game to become a not that new but on sale game, so we just wait it out. Also with every passing minute, the volume of good old games to serve as competition against good new games increases by default. The former is over 40 years worth of content, enough to crush the current output several times over no matter how well the quality could potentially be.

But then who's to say what counts as new? 3 months old? 6 months old? No amount of skilled millennials and zoomer devs could ever make a Silent Hill, Deus Ex, Devil May Cry, or Hitman: Blood Money. They couldn't even make a classic Doom as good.
There is simply a generational deficiency. The new devs just don't have the right stuff and they never will.

We are now witnessing the market switching over to the new and upcoming generation. Now, large studios have already pivoted to reflect that, think of all the bullshit loot box crap that has been added to your favorite online games. This is the first step to that.
We are getting ready to see the next step in the divide, less console releases overall, more emphasis on the largest demographic, the phone users.

I buy every game I want to play, money is no object. This year alone I've bought 3 games.
It's not about price, most games just aren't worth playing so they're not worth buying.
