Because it looks trash. It is rated positively only because Tomohackgu Itahackgi recently dropped dead finally, you can tell that becasue 95% of the positive reviews on Steam aren't about the game, but about sucking the dead hack's dick, who incidentally had nothing to do with this game whatsoever so idk why they even attribute it to him.

i think this is part of why NG1 worked well, it didnt overplay its hand or reveal all of its cards. you didnt see too much of the world which worked to its benefit as a base to expand on later. most of the levels seemed either isolated and ancient (ninja fortress/hayabusa village) or hidden from most of the world (ice caverns /caves/tombs under tairon) or semi modernized with a foot stuck in the past with an interesting blend of modern tech (city of tairon). tairon was cool because it was an isolated region with its own military and border, giving you the sense that the rest of the world didnt know what was in it or what they were up to. only seeing tairon, you had no way of knowing what the rest of the world was like, which added a sense of wondering what else was out there in the sequel games.

in the sequel games they just seemed to throw away that atmosphere and world they were creating and showed off way too much way too fast and most of it just felt weird even if it did make sense on paper (italy? in ng2) it wasnt as interesting to explore like tairon which seemed to have a history behind it unique to ninja gaiden (crypt under the monastary, were the zombies you fight the remains of the vigoorian empire? are those zombies the same as the vigoorian beserkers you fight on harder difficulties?)

it was also interesting that tairon had a military complete with tanks and such, enforcing their own border which gave the impression that tairon and that region kept the rest of the modern world out to preserve its culture and lifestyle. basically i remember feeling like they would expand more on that region and its history in later games an never did.

Playing on hard and the first combat encounter seemed pretty lame. It seemed beneficial to run past the melee guys to cut up the gun guys then try to aoe with the ult attack to mop up all the melees at once lest I get gang banged. Doesn't seem very fun. Does it get more involved?

Because they fucked something and a huge number of supposed-to-be-supported configurations either fail to load shaders outright (black window, instant crash) or make corrupt shaders that inevitably crash the game (usually results in a fucked up looking start screen)

I got to the forest yesterday and I was having the time of my life. Hard is pure fucking cbt and I think I was stuck on both the samurai and the fox slut for at least 40 minutes each
I really like how they kept the NG feel of having a block + dodge button while also incorporating platinums signature parry, which is very high risk but also rewarding. the blood thing is cool but I havent used it that much, and the instant kill that everyone was worried about is very hard to earn and not spammable at all

this games dodge offset isnt like bayos at all
bayo has dial a combos with the string enders (and the button holds) making up for 90% of your damage. NG4 has nothing like that and dodge offset in this game is more like a flavour thing rather than an actual mechanic since you're never hitting a single enemy nor dodging to the side of that same enemy and continuing your combo.
as for witch time, its also not the same at all. witch time is the main offensive mechanic in bayo (aside from infinite climax) which lets you do all the cool shit. NG4 base "witch time" doesnt even slow time down or let you do as you please, it has 2 followups with tons of iframes and negligible damage or you just go back to the regular gameplay at normal speed.

Unlike Rachel and Momiji, Yakumo's gameplay keeps all of the core mechanical conceits of Ryu's gameplay, with the sorta-kinda exception that his version of ninpo is the blood sword thing. It's the same basic combo logic as the Dragon sword, he still gets shit like wind run, guillotine throw, izuna drop, mid-air shurikens, the whole thing feels like reskinned Ryu.

Only UTs do it, and it's an advertised feature of UTs in the game (charge to full and release to automatically dash toward an enemy and UT them). There's some minor attack magnetism but it isn't much more than you would typically get out of a combination of

No, the problem is the lack of momentum. Because the game auto-propels you along a wall run trajectory, you wind up fighting with invisible surface normal detection whether or not your wall run will go UP the surface in front of you, or will fling you off to one side laterally. If the game just projected your momentum onto the contact surface with reduced gravity (so your trajectory was arbitrary) it would feel a lot smoother, though it would take slightly more skill to actually use it to cross gaps because you couldn't just jump into a wall and let the automatic momentum system drive you along it at the exact rate prespecified by the level designers.

I understand I'm the asshole for trying to jump up on top of every shipping container I see looking for secret collectibles and shit. I get that. The wallrun is just a gimmick in NG, it always has been, the game is not a platformer. I still hate it.

Played up to chapter 4 so far but didn't clear yet. It definitely plays differently than other NG games but it has NG things in it. That said it's a very fun game, platinum went all out. If I didn't have to go to work tomorrow I'd play it until sunrise.

It's still XY, XXXY for Izuna drop. It's still jump + forward Y for Flying Swallow. You still hold block, then tap a direction to dodge from the block. You still get the canned extended jump with the triple shuriken throw if you press B in mid-air. The combo logic is very similar and the special moves are identical.

There are two main distinctions: one is that instead of Ninpo, Yakumo gets a "hold trigger to modify attacks" system where every attack has a super-powered meter spend variant that have unique combat properties. This is your spells. The other is that he gets additional input logic reminiscent of PG titles; dodge at the last second, press foward-backward y, that sort of thing. If you're used to the basic combat logic of NG, in terms of the timing and range of basic attacks, the difference in feel between light and heavy, how it works to launch enemies into the air, entering and exiting block at key moments, shuriken cancels, etc., you will feel right at home. It's not like playing Nero in DMC4 where it's a completely different game.

In the most literal sense, no. But I'm not sure why you would want to cut corners and skip over experiences you would most likely enjoy. NG1 and 2 are 12 or so hours long and 3 is 6 or 7 hours long. You can zip through all of these super quickly.

Good post. They got lazy in NG2 and beyond by just setting it in stylized versions of real places. Tairon doesn’t get enough credit for how fun it is to explore and how much atmosphere it oozes. It’s all easy to put together if you think about it. You’re just a brainlet. It’s pointed out that Vigoor is isolated and has their own weird tech and military that doesn’t necessarily follow what the rest of the world is doing. The blimp is the only way into Tairon, which is why Ryu has to be smuggled in. The ancient ruins and temples were their ancestors, and they built their capital on top of the ruins. Vigoorians are supposed to be eccentric and into the dark arts which is why everything they do is in secrecy. Them hiring a bunch of samurai and ninja from a rival clan to do their dirty work also makes sense, especially since Doku himself is also a fiend and has the same goals as them. The first game being so fantastical really clashes with the more realistic locations in the other two games.

I've only beaten the first chapter so far. Bretty good. Though I see the series continues to have boss fights that slow down the gameplay. NG bosses in general tend to rub me the wrong way. NG is a very proactive game for a large majority of its play time but a lot of the bosses force you to slow down and be reactive instead. I guess that's okay but I usually die in boss fights because I wanted to do something cool or I got bored of doing the boring strategy of jumping out of the way and punishing. Or in NG4's case, parry normal attacks and blood attack the big ones.

Guard break dodge is it. I think guard reset is actually not relevant in this game anymore? He was able to make entire new encounters in new places which might be a little out of scope right now. i might know some of what youre talking about, there was a channel on youtube a few years back that looked promising called something like guiltygaming. much of what he did was palette swap stuff but he eventually did some more complicated things hex editing.

i think the fans would enjoy some new content even if some of its absurd. like replacing black spider clan ambushes with 3 clone hayabusas.


if you were to weak enemies, i think taking the flame ninja, turning it purple, along with its flames, or a green variant to bulk out the ninja roster could be fun too. im sure lots of enjoyable stuff could be done for a sort of ngb expansion pack sort of experience.

the real trick would be if you could edit the enemies to create a new variant without replacing the originals. like making a viggorian beserker subtype which attacks faster or more frequently, has a different color palette, but with the same or less health for balance. just fun stuff.

- Only one weapon, the Dragon Sword.
- Only playable in 4 levels out 19 total.

Playing through NGB is refreshing my love for vidya. I know the other games cut down on the adventure game aspect but it's really fun, some enemies and bosses will piss me off but then figuring them out and killing them with ease is so satisfying even more than other games.

i always felt like it would be easy to tune and tweak things in NG2 for a better experience, like making enemies 5%-10% less accurate with projectiles, combined with them either shooting more often, to preserve the sense of chaos, or less often, to make it less cheesy, often locking you into a specific frantic mode of play during THOSE segments. from some old master ninja footage it looks like there might be a red and gold variant of spider ninja which is kino, but it may just be green and gold. (low lighting)

higher tiered enemies will always be a kino game addition as far as im concerned regardless if they get new moves or not, however, its hard for me not to shill for itagaki with how they handled higher difficulty enemies in NGB. i cant think of many other games that have done anything like that and to me it sets that game apart from all others to this day in my eyes.


NG3RE was pretty depressing because i found most of the enemies in that game pretty lame or boring. they just got it the right time somehow with NG/NGB. even enemies who are the same archetype (MSAT commandos (swat guys in ngb) or the tairon military, looked so much cooler to me than the guys you fight in NG3. and on higher difficulties you can argue they look even cooler but thats up to opinion. the first time i played hard mode on NGB (months after finishing NGB on normal) i was blown away as a kid that there were all sorts of enemy types/models/skins hidden under my nose waiting to be discovered. definitely a boomer those were the days memory.

I've been playing it all day. It's very different and I don't like some stuff. For example the magnetic attacks just feel very shit at first. Positioning doesn't seem to matter too much and in the thick of combat I can just immediately stick to enemies well off camera without having full awareness of what's going on around. Besides that the combat is very addictive and stylish while still feeling like a dangerous game of crowd control. It's different, imperfect but still fun.

Hurricane Pack 1 is just Black’s Hard Mode. And Hurricane Pack 2 is just Mission Mode. The only thing that was missing is the Intercept block which was excessively OP, and the Ninja of the Future skin. Oh and 04 had the OG trilogy as the arcade unlockable.
Then Base Game 04’s Hard/Very Hard is the exact same as Normal, just tweaked enemy AI and Fiend Challenges are 80/100 kills instead.

I love Ninja Gaiden Black, wonderful game indeed, but its fans are delusional. The whole game (and NGII as well) are basically abusing infinite i-frames with simple to execute combos: the game. The idea that NGB is somewhat comparable to Bayonetta 1, DMC, God Hand, etc. is absurd. In fact, i would argue NGB is more simple than some From games like Bloodborne. You have limited blocks this time so it's more risky for no reason, going for dodges is better every single times. The attack parry is also more lenient anyway so you might as well attack then...?
