And this is a problem, why?
99.9% of slop on Steam is just that, slop. Put there by anybody with $100 hoping to scam a few dozen retards to make a nice $20-100 profit.
The $100 system was a mistake. They need to go back to greenlight.

It's so disheartening to think about all the work that goes into something that maybe no one will even notice.

it's not about the player anon, it's about you as a dev seeing a project from start to finish in a way YOU want.
if other people like it, great. if not you still have the satisfaction of doing it (plus it pads out the portfolio/resume)

I respect that sentiment, but it's never going to turn out like it is in my head because I have no artistic talent and no money to pay an artist. And if you just want to finish something to say you finished it then there's no need to pay the $100 to publish it on Steam.

It would be nice to try and combat the flood of slop by making something of at least average to above average quality, but it seems like it'd just get lost in the sea of slop.

Greenlight sucked ass. Asset flippers used bot farms and indian shill warehouses to greenlight their slop for pennies while actual games fell by the wayside. The $100 fee helps genuine games compete and makes slop less profitable, although it clearly hasn't solved the problem.

That's a good perspective to have.

What's a good way to actually address the issue? Seems like you'd need a person to go through every game and see if it's slop or not, but that'd be a judgement call that perhaps everyone wouldn't agree with.

Greenlight where only verified users who have spent a substantial amount of money and have had an account for many years can vote AND the developer needs to pay $1000+ once their game is approved to get on the store.
It's time to get the slop off Steam.
Anonymous No.723810676 [Report]
>>723810567
Most people value indie games being able to get on steam more than slop they don't see unless they look for it existing.
Anonymous No.723810790 [Report] >>723815529
>>723810567
Although that would work for stemming the slop tide, it seems like it would block too many legitimate indie developers though. A good system would let new indie devs get started, and a newcomer might not be able to get widespread public support or afford a large fee.

If I had a solution I'd be phoning gabe instead of posting on a laotian cheese making forum.
From valves pov they don't want to miss the next vampire survivors or balatro because the outsourced slop curator had a bad day, so that's why they allow it.
Best I can think of is charge a higher fee as a deposit, but refund it depending on the games performance. So charge $1000 but if you get 10 positive reviews you get $500 back. 50 positive reviews and you get $900, 100 and you get everything back.
I'm pulling numbers out my ass, but valve has the stats. There should be a threshold that is discouraging to sloppers but doesn't unduly penalise devs who've put even a modicum of effort in.
The obvious problem is that sloppers could buy sales, but thats a problem valve seems to have a handle on.

Hey game devs: wanna know how you can for sure guarantee people will play your game, and maybe even really enjoy it, and be appreciative of you for making it? Wanna know how to have a fairly small, but enthusiastic following?

Make a porn game for a niche fetish that doesn't get featured much in erotic media. The bar to get over is literally on the floor. Nobody really cares that much about mechanics or innovation in erotic media, they care about content. Deliver on the main kink / fantasy and you can rip off another game, literally copy/paste its source code, and nobody will care that much.

This but you should be able to deduct it from your sales (or rather steam's 30% cut of your sales).

Honestly the $100 could still apply and have the same effect. The important part is not allowing botfarms to vote.
it should be 100 to apply to greenlight, money is returned only if successful.

>you should make games for yourself first and foremost
That's a primitive and naive way of looking at it. Games aren't something like visual art, writing or music, requiring significantly less time investment to do, and are very accessible to others. Games are insanely complex and massive things that take at least months (if you care about making something good, not cubes and default avatars) to make. When you get zero acknowledgement, let alone money, it makes it harder for someone to keep doing it, compared to arts or music.

No.
You will never wash the stench off after you do this.
You're that guy for life.
The following you gain isn't even transferrable to anything else. It's just "Okay, where's the porn, buddy" from them.
It might not even be a following of perverts, it might be normal people.
But you've only charmed their lizard-brain. There's NO crossover.

Bad fuckin idea.

Remember a decade or so back when a Steam competition gave some guy every single game available on Steam? The platform had been out for about 12 years at that point, and I think he got somewhere around 10k games.

Why are we now getting nearly that many every single year?

A game that is only fun because of you and your friends playing it, not the gameplay. If you can't have fun without friends or is not designed around playing with generally anyone, it's friendslop.
