like, if we're just talking about image generation? it takes a pregenerated image of random noise and just makes adjustments to it. then it converts the result of the adjusted image to an array of numbers which it compares to the array of numbers it associates with the prompt. it then adjusts the image again and checks if it got further or closer to the desired array of numbers. it repeats this process for however many loops you let it.
you can adjust a whole bunch of different factors within this other than just the prompt. you can create loras to change the arrays of numbers. you can take stronger control over the random noise. you can introduce more random noise in between adjustment steps. you can change out models that are better or worse at adjusting for various sorts of arrays of numbers.
there are a billion ways you can interact with image gen, and none of it has anything to do with "putting together pieces like a jigsaw", it's more like shaking a pan full of multicolored sand and seeing if it looks like anything
