I love the game, therefore I'm its harshest critic.

Here are the three big ones/

>The various "Chapter III" are very hit and miss. The idea should be that it takes elements from both previous chapters and expands upon them, thus exposing the main theme of a given cycle. Only "The Thorn" and "The Princess and The Dragon" really do that fully, though, with "The Wild" not being far behind. Too many are just straight-up continuations of their respective "Chapter II," with either nothing new thrown in (Apotheosis; The Fury; Happily Ever After) or just being confused and muddy in what they're supposed to achieve (The Cage is the biggest sinner). They could use a rewrite.

>When adding new endings they missed a massive opportunity by not allowing a player who ended a given cycle with an unequivocally loving version of the Princess (Songbird; Thorn; The Wild) to be able to rip that particular one away from the Shifting Mound, make her her own person, and leave together. Or maybe stay together in a re-shaped Construct.

Prisoner generally feels extremely disconnected with her various chapters:

In Chapter II she's distrustful and weary of you because... she just is? But still expects you to literally read her mind and figure out you're supposed to carry out her head out of the cabin. I don't see the message here, or even what type of love is she supposed to represent.

Then in Chapter III she carries a grudge against you and attempts to torture and murder you because...?

In Chapter I, sure, that makes sense. But to get The Prisoner you have to set her free and literally let yourself be murdered by her.

Honestly, I don't even quite understand why this choice in particular leads to the Prisoner.

Prisoner was an exploration of agency in a relationship, irrc? It's been over a year since I played the vn and longer since it was analyzed in the threads, so I can't remember the full gist of it, but that was the core. Like, she's paired with the damsel since one has all the freedom but no will or drive to do anything with it, and the other has no freedom at all but all the will and drive to act. Some of it was trust, as well: you trust her with the knife, she trusts you with herself -- grey is about betrayed trust

Want to leave the basement? She becomes hostile. Get too close? Becomes hostile. All the while offering no input.

Her last few lines in chapter 1 have her recognizing that you've got something controlling your actions -- she's aware the narrator can puppet you. That's why she gets hostile if you approach her with the knife and why she doesn't speak since she doesn't want to notify him

Started playing yesterday, this is what I've got. Is it worth doing any more runs? To be honest, the game is very repetitive and formulaic:

I really don't get the hype. Yes, there were some cool moments like Thorn, Nightmare and the actual ending, but the rest is 90% schizo voice chatter, bickering with the Narrator, and the Princess threatening you. A whole lot of words to say very little.

Well, this game made me cry, and for other people like you they feel nothing. It's my opinion that if you haven't been in a long term relationship, that there is a part of the game that might not make sense to you. To me, it's not literally about the princess and the hero. It's about the actions people can take during a relationship and the possible ramifications of those actions. How people can hurt each other without meaning to.

If you want to see more I'd say Fury, Princess and Dragon, and the Wild are some really cool routes. Also if you haven't gotten the godslayer ending with the shifting mound you definitely should seeing how you seem to prefer fighting the princess.

You seem to enjoy the game enough, don't worry if it doesn't resonate with you on a personal level that much it won't for everyone. I found the game to have creative turns in some of the routes, and enjoyed the emotional core of the sweet and vicious moments. The game gives you a lot of choices and I'm someone who enjoys just getting lost in seeing all the little variations and branches.

Actually, no. That's how I got Thorn, I just gave her the blade then tried to build trust, and it worked and I got a cool chapter for my efforts.

It's just the game usually ends in chapter 2 if you don't fight, so the violence is inevitable if you don't want to skip content.

You can't really have a game about looping and not have it have some degree of repetitivity. Despite that the game lets you go down a lot of different paths with tiny variations inside. Like even now during this dev's stream I'm seeing a version of the Tower's path I haven't done before.

I'd say but no need to force yourself if you're not feeling it. Maybe prioritise the Chapter 2s with the Princesses/voices you like more and see what other directions they can go

Ah, if you prefer the routes where you and the princess are on friendly terms then yeah go for Princess and the Dragon and The Wild. For the Wild Go through the witch route and then try to fight the Witch in chapter two. You two should both get crushed.

The first one separates birds from people, the second is impossible to his form, and the last one is very specific to humanity itself. Apart from direct quotes, there's also the human-centric everything about the construct like a cabin in the woods, castles and cutlery and board games, and so on.

In MY headcanon, he was, most uncharitable, very likely just a furry. More charitably, once the two gods took their forms, he may have tried to connect with TLQ (whether by familiarity, or to project himself/his will through him).

It's based but very different from Slay the Princess. Not bad, but one's a dark surreal game with a limited cast and one's a more realistic game with a huge cast, more comedy (though still spooky at times), and also a trait system.

Here's a cast of cute diverse quirky Tumblr characters, but now they're in a violent horror game where awful shit happens and they have to fend for their life and all the gore is still in a Tumblr artstyle.

For a visual novel, I think Scarlet Hollow is definitely good. The Perk system helps replayability and helps the PC feel like more of an actual character in the story instead of just a blank vessel to present the narrative. Though it's a bit limited at the moment since it mostly amounts to a handful of unique bits of information and then just one big narrative changing moment in the story for each Perk. Some of the perks definitely feel underdeveloped compared to others. The extent to which you can just be a total asshole or weirdo and everyone else has to deal with it is funny and I think the reactions of the characters to your choices are mostly well written.

Slay the Princess had me downright enchanted and it stuck with me heavily for quite a while after I played it and I can still recall most of it even now. Scarlet Hollow doesn't really have as much to help it stand out. It's more of a typical Americana Mystery. Charming and fun but it didn't really grab me the same way Slay the Princess did.
