I liked it for anything that required precise aiming. Closest thing a console will ever come to having a mouse without actually having a mouse. The main menu was also very fun and intuitive to use.

TP Wii has the edge for Wiimote aiming, QoL things like slashing grass for rupees while running in the early game, and not accidentally wasting an item (such as a bottle of hot spring water) after smashing B to skip dialogue
I still alternate between both versions when doing replays though, playing the game mirrored each time jogs my noggin

People like me perhaps over hated it at the time for being a waggle machine that catered to casuals.
It did have some good games as much as I may not like to admit it, and the system is the reason why the switch/2 have such good motion controls which can actually meaningfully contribute to a game instead of just being a gimmick.

But make no mistake, the wii is a gimmick machine, and it what started the trend of forcing shit nobody asked for into games that didn't need or want it.

Making jumping in donkey kong country returns a waggle motion instead of just a button press is the poster child for shit like it, and twilight princess for the gamecube goes for way more than the wii version because literally everyone hates the waggle shit forced into the game.

A good console but it leaned too much into the gimmick for some games. Some of the best Wii games ignored motion control and were just ordinary games (Sonic Colors, Brawl, etc.). Meanwhile many others that went all in on it (Wii Sports, Wario Ware) were also great because they embraced it but kept the games light, fun, and simple. The ones that failed were the ones that shoehorned it in when buttons would have been better (NSMB, Donkey Kong) and just used "waggle" as an extra, imprecise face button, or the games that were too ambitious and expected too much precision out of the pointer and motions (Metroid Prime 3, Skyward Sword).

Yeah but we didn't know this until the Switch port. The motion controls made the game unplayable. Having to take a 30s break every 5 minutes to recalibrate your controller destroys your immersion and in a series all about immersion that destroys the game.

Why have I never had this experience? Was it because I had Sensor Bar Assist on? Outside of the initial calibration of the controller when you first turn the game on, I never had this experience.

I'm not saying the game was perfect, just that the "you need to recalibrate all the time" was never my experience. I fully admit there were times where I had to, but they were very few and far in between each other. As in "I can count how many times it happened on one had even with fingers missing" amount. There are other things to complain about with SS, but this one wasn't it on my experience.

kind of a weird console. Not my favourite from nintendo but it gave us the galaxy games which are incredible. Its odd, they dont seem to belong in that gen. Oddly ambitious and truly innovative beyond motion control gimmicks.

For the rest, it had cool niche games and pirating it was easy and convenient thanks to the virtual console extensive library + backwards compatibility. But most main series didnt have their best games on the wii.

Oddly enough the nds was a lot more solid and universally acclaimed.

The wii was a great console. Amazing library highs, but absolutely inundated with the worst slop on the market.
It also brought Nintendo's attention and focus to the market desperate for rereleases of retro games. We're sort of overwhelmed by the retro scene in 2025, but back in the day we were seeing things for sale again for the first time in decades.

Aside from being very low spec even for its time, there's nothing wrong with it. Huge variety of games, you'll never see exclusives like Madworld on a Nintendo console (or maybe any console) again. Very cozy wind-down features like the everyone votes channel and weather channel. Compact and aesthetic AF. Controllers that are still going strong. Free online. Literally the opposite of modern Nintendo in every way. There's a reason it shook the industry.

Mostly a gimmick but somehow got a good amount of good games and thanks to VC, WiiWare, softmods and homebrew is an amazing console to hook up to your setup.
