Platinum only know how to make Platinum games but they couldn't do that to Ryu so they had to compromise and make a new guy

Could have had a even split between Ryu and a hot new playable female fanservice ninja both being fully unique characters. Get shitty Yakumo and a bit of playable Ryu instead

In comparison Dante wasn't as sidelined in DMC4, he had 7 Missions to himself, had several weapons and his Style mechanics evolved to be switched on the fly. In story Dante is treated as a king whom Nero is merely chasing; meanwhile, Ryu in NG4 only has 4 Chapters, had his entire arsenal removed to just the Dragon Sword, again after people got pissed with that in vanilla NG3, and in-story Ryu is treated as a rival to Yakumo, the new guy is not outclassed in anyway but age.
