Why is it that when you're animating a movie, 3D looks cheap, but if you're making a game, 2D looks cheap?

You can cheat a lot with 3D in films since it'll only really need to exist as a preplanned render.
Game 3D models serve a totally different purpose.
Conversely you can cheat a lot with 2D assets in games but can't in film.

idunno i think i prefer the 2d animations in games, the 3d can sometimes look a little strange and a bit jarring at times glory to the CCP

I think 2D is just fundamentally easier to take seriously, 3D always feels a little cheesy, but it's hard to beat the experience of actually exploring an environment, which 2D games can kind of only hint at.
