Doom (1993)
Doom 3
DOOM (2016)
Doom II
Eternal
Dark Ages
I say this as a serious Doomer who knows what the terms UVMAX, Sunlust, and BFG tracers mean. I agree with Joel (Vinesauce) that Doom 2's maps aren't nearly as good as the original. I mean yeah Barrels of Fun and Dead Simple, but everything after Entryway and Underhalls just feel like a chore. Downtown is so fucking bad. If Doom (1993) had the SSG and enemy roster as Doom II literally no one would play Doom II.
Doom 3 is my hot take I just think it's a great game despite not being a Doom game in the traditional sense. Art looks great, guns are good (I like the shotgun), and the tech demo meme is true because my god does the lighting look great over 20 years later. If you don't consider it part of the franchise you can nix it from my list and nothing would move.
2016 was the most Doom has felt since the originals and was a lot of fun.
Eternal had the Rick and Morty effect and it became *too* Doom to the point where it's not Doomguy, it's the SLAYER and everyone is afraid of you in the intro. Lame power fantasy, which it was a bit before, but now any ambiguity is removed.
Dark Ages is the way most people feel about 3, for me. I mean in an out of context screenshot it looks like a great shooter, but with the Doom title, no way.
I think the best thing for Doom is to stop. It's hit it's cultural maximum and will only continue to be flanderized going forward.
