No, it's not.
1) the third person cover system was awful.
2) the canned animation takedowns were awful
3) the boss fights were an absolute ass, to a point where they had to re-do them completely for the director's cut.
4) the writing is pretty bad. It's a combination of somewhat shallow core idea for a cyberpunk dilemma, just lack of decent characters overall, and the obvious massive, massive fucking cuts they've made to the game (the entire god damn montreal hub being thrown out last minute) that very much kills the story.
5) everything in the final chapter. It's all shit. Awful, linear, rushed, with one of the worst bossfights in the entire bunch, out of fucking nowhere, and caped with three button solution that absolutely does not feel natural or substantive, it's there because of obligation.

Look, for a 7th gen game, DXHR was MIRACULOUSLY good. This was released very much at the lowest point of gaming history. By metrics of it's time it was absolutely amazing, and by todays metrics, it's still not bad. There is a lot to like and lot it did correctly. Art direction and music are fantastic (piss not withstanding), level design is solid, especially for a 7th gen game, it compliments the DX brand of "find your own solution" when you aren't fighting the boss, the RPG mechanics were decent, the world is actually reactive, there is a good chunk of content in it.

I like Human Revolution a lot. But the piss filter wasn't even close to be its biggest problem, let alone to only one.

I think anon just didn't specify why canned takedowns are worse. If you are going to make a new installment in a series that's all about deep simulation over scripted sequences, the last thing you should do is take a dynamic melee system and replace it with canned animations that stop time. Regardless of how simple melee was in DX1, at least it was melee. You aim and you attack, and your hit is calculated and it deals damage of some kind depending on what it hits. That is immersive sim design philosophy. Instead of adding a bunch of canned optionsf for the player to choose, you add a system that interacts with multiple systems and the player gets to engage with it freely. Human Revolution should have had an improved melee system not just scrap a sub-optimal melee system.

It was better than the entire game getting halted for 10 seconds while your immersion is shattered as the camera smacks out of your body to show the same exact fucking animation for a 100x time.

There is a way to implement stealth takedowns without them being obnoxious. DXHR did not do it right.
To their credit, Dishonored didn't come out until later (if I remember correctly), so the golden standard for stealth takedowns wasn't quite established yet but JESUS.
Honestly, the takedowns may genuinely be the worst part about DXHR now that the bossfights are somewhat fixed in Director's cut. They are so pace-breaking and obnoxious.
The cover system can be easily circumvented by not using it and just using regular crouch but man the takedowns were TRASH.

Actually, I don't need a dynamic melee system. I mean sure, I'd apprecite more in-depth mechanics but I also understand that everyone can just come up with "more shit to put in" - it's not a valid criticism.

Again, dishonored figured this shit out a year later. The magnetism, the unbroken perspective and the pace of it, it was good. You never felt stalled, but you never felt like you are fumbling around with imprecise controls. For a multiplatform title, that is as good as things will get.

Honestly as one of few people who actually PLAYED Deus Ex instead of watching memes on Youtube and actually FINISHED Deus Ex instead of quitting two hours in, it's a fantastic first half stapled to a horrendous second half. If I was being as uncharitable as you are, I'd say Dead Space is RE4 but better as it doesn't have a combat system reliant on shitty QTE's and contextual prompts and instead let's you freely melee. It also doesn't have a baby mode inventory screen that pauses the game and instead keeps everything in real time

i never played this game despite how popular it was, until like 2018, and it was an amazing game and things constantly remind me of it. was a very good experience. i also made sure to play on disc so i got the kino yellow filter which enhanced all visuals dramatically giving many parts of the game a beautiful introspective enjoying the sunset sort of feeling. it just works.

Objectively wrong. I love hundreds of games from all through out gaming history, starting in 1991 and ending with 2025.
There were always some great games. It's just that there were better times, and worse times. Gen7 was absolutely, objectively, by far the worst time in gaming history, and it still gave us Dishonored and Dark Souls which I love dearly. Not to mention technically speaking, The Void comes from this era.

Last decade gave us games like Factorio, Pathologic 2, Outer Wilds, Return of Obra Dinn, Alien Isolation, Prey 2017, Talos Principle, Cultic, Dusk, HROT, TWH2 and 3, just off the top of my head. That is just games I've played this year.

Three of my all time-favorite 10 games are essentially recent releases (Pathologic 2, Outer Wilds and Factorio).

I'm not the one biased, you absolute retard. 1998-2005 may have been by far the richest (Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Age of Empires, Starcraft, Baldurs Gate, Morrowind, Gothic, Homm3, Majesty, fucking Half-life 1 and 2, Fear and so on).

Deus Ex HR actually reminds me a lot of VTMB with the open hub areas and quest design that involves mostly doing detective work (exploring, interrogating NPCs, breaking into places, etc) than actual combat.

The term you are looking for here is immersive sim (and yeah, it is a dumb name).
Im-sims are famously a cursed genre, but there is a few other games like that outside of Deus Ex and VTM:B IP's. Most notably, System Shock 2, Dishonored 1-2, Prey 2017.

If literally anyone else had bought Deus Ex we could have had a chance of getting a sequel to MD but we will never get one now due to embracer.

Because the leak was literally the entire first Detroit act. It was like 4-5 hours of solid gameplay at the least.

Honestly: absolutely nothing. I never got on the MGS train when I was young, and by the time Phantom Pain came out, I was way, way behind on the story.
I did try to get in MGS games several times, I know they are very interesting and innovative and something I'd love to be more familiar with, they are a piece of incredibly influential history, but... I can't. Between the archaic console gameplay and the "quirks" of Kojima's writing that just irritate me for some reason, I just fall off MGS every time I try.
The newer games alleviate the gameplay issues I suppose but without context the story is even more of a mess.
MGS will forever stay a gaping hole in my knowledge of the industry. Which I am absolutely not proud off.

Wrong and wrong. You don't make a dating sim sequel to a Gran Turismo game. Fortnite as a sequel to literal chess would not be acceptable. Doom as a walking sim horror game with no weapons would be wrong game design. You can make an installment to a franchise wrong and Thief 2014 did it wrong. LGS made a systems-based stealth simulator. A cinematic action adventure with all choices manually added by level designers and zero room for emergence is a wrong game.
And Prey is not the same thing. Prey actually is a systems-based simulation sandbox made by a company specializing in systems-based simulation sandboxes, and Zenimax forced them to change its title from "Typhon" to "Prey" because their trademark of a game title from 2006 was about to expire and they needed to have a commercial product carrying the title in order the renew the name.
